Matrix Model of Strength Distribution: Extension and Phase Transition

    Arun Kingan · Larry Zamick🇺🇸

In this work we extend a previous study of matrix models of strength distributions. We still retain the nearest neighbor coupling mode but we extend the values the coupling parameter v. We consider extremes, from very smal v to very large v. We first use the same transiiton operator as before \textless{}n T(n+1)\textgreater{} =constat(=1). For this case we get an exponential decreasefor small v but we get a phase transition beyond v=10. In that case we get an even-odd effect-separate exponentials for even n and for odd n. We now also consider also the dipole choice--where \textless{}nT(n+1)\textgreater{} = .

First study on iron complexes in blood and organ samples from thalassaemic and normal laboratory mice using Moessbauer spectroscopy

    G. Charitou · V. Petousis🇨🇿 · Ch. Tsertos (Dept. of Physics, University of Cyprus) · Y. Parpottas (Frederick University, Cyprus)🇨🇾 · M. Kleanthous · M. Phylactides (Dept. of Molecular Genetics Thalassaemia, Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Cyprus) · S. Christou (Thalassaemia Center, Archbishop Makarios III Hospital, Cyprus)

In this paper, blood and tissues samples from one normal and one thalassaemic lab-mice were studied using 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy at 78K for the first time. In contrast to human patients, these laboratory mice did not receive any medical treatment, thus the iron components present in the samples are not altered. The measured Moessbauer spectra of the blood, liver and spleen samples of the thalassaemic mouse were found to be different in the shape and iron content as compared to the corresponding spectra of the normal mouse. This result demonstrates the further exploitation of the thalassaemic mouse model to study thalassaemia in more details by means of Moessbauer spectroscopy.

Overview of recent femtoscopy measurements with ALICE

Małgorzata Anna Janik (for the ALICE Collaboration)🇵🇱

One of the key methods used in the study of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is femtoscopy, the technique of measuring short-range two-particle correlations as a function of relative momentum. Traditionally, femtoscopy has been utilized to measure the size of the QGP fireball created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. However, since it is sensitive to the correlations between the particles in the final state, it has been shown recently that the parameters of the strong interaction can be probed as well. This review includes a broad range of ALICE femtoscopy results, including both traditional and novel measurements of the interaction between particles.

    Dark Side of the Neutron?

    Bartosz Fornal🇺🇸 · Benjamin Grinstein🇺🇸

We discuss our recently proposed interpretation of the discrepancy between the bottle and beam neutron lifetime experiments as a sign of a dark sector. The difference between the outcomes of the two types of measurements is explained by the existence of a neutron dark decay channel with a branching fraction 1%. Phenomenologically consistent particle physics models for the neutron dark decay can be constructed and they involve a strongly self-interacting dark sector. We elaborate on the theoretical developments around this idea and describe the efforts undertaken to verify it experimentally.
