Fingerprints of heavy scales in electroweak effective Lagrangians

    Antonio Pich🇪🇸 · Ignasi Rosell🇪🇸 · Joaquin Santos🇪🇸 · Juan Jose Sanz-Cillero🇪🇸

The couplings of the electroweak effective theory contain information on the heavy-mass scales which are no-longer present in the low-energy Lagrangian. We build a general effective Lagrangian, implementing the electroweak chiral symmetry breaking , which couples the known particle fields to heavier states with bosonic quantum numbers and . We consider colour-singlet heavy fields that are in singlet or triplet representations of the electroweak group. Integrating out these heavy scales, we analyze the pattern of low-energy couplings among the light fields which are generated by the massive states. We adopt a generic non-linear realization of the electroweak symmetry breaking with a singlet Higgs, without making any assumption about its possible doublet structure. Special attention is given to the different possible descriptions of massive spin-1 fields and the differences arising from naive implementations of these formalisms, showing their full equivalence once a proper short-distance behaviour is required.

Two-loop planar master integrals for Higgs partons with full heavy-quark mass dependence

    Roberto Bonciani🇮🇹 · Vittorio Del Duca🇨🇭 · Hjalte Frellesvig🇬🇷 · Johannes M. Henn🇩🇪 · Francesco Moriello🇨🇭 · Vladimir A. Smirnov🇷🇺

We present the analytic computation of all the planar master integrals which contribute to the two-loop scattering amplitudes for Higgs partons, with full heavy-quark mass dependence. These are relevant for the NNLO corrections to fully inclusive Higgs production and to the NLO corrections to Higgs production in association with a jet, in the full theory. The computation is performed using the differential equations method. Whenever possible, a basis of master integrals that are pure functions of uniform weight is used. The result is expressed in terms of one-fold integrals of polylogarithms and elementary functions up to transcendental weight four. Two integral sectors are expressed in terms of elliptic functions. We show that by introducing a one-dimensional parametrization of the integrals the relevant second order differential equation can be readily solved, and the solution can be expressed to all orders of the dimensional regularization parameter in terms of iterated integrals over elliptic kernels. We express the result for the elliptic sectors in terms of two and three-fold iterated integrals, which we find suitable for numerical evaluations. This is the first time that four-point multiscale Feynman integrals have been computed in a fully analytic way in terms of elliptic functions.

Analysis of nucleon electromagnetic form factors from light-front holographic QCD : The spacelike region

    Raza Sabbir Sufian🇺🇸 · Guy F. de Téramond🇨🇷 · Stanley J. Brodsky🇺🇸 · Alexandre Deur🇺🇸 · Hans Günter Dosch🇩🇪

We present a comprehensive analysis of the spacelike nucleon electromagnetic form factors and their flavor decomposition within the framework of light-front holographic QCD. We show that the inclusion of the higher Fock components has a significant effect on the spin-flip elastic Pauli form factor and almost zero effect on the spin-conserving Dirac form factor. We present light-front holographic QCD results for the proton and neutron form factors at any momentum transfer range, including asymptotic predictions, and show that our results agree with the available experimental data with high accuracy. In order to correctly describe the Pauli form factor we need an admixture of a five quark state of about 30 in the proton and about 40 in the neutron. We also extract the nucleon charge and magnetic radii and perform a flavor decomposition of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. The free parameters needed to describe the experimental nucleon form factors are very few: two parameters for the probabilities of higher Fock states for the spin-flip form factor and a phenomenological parameter , required to account for possible SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry breaking effects in the neutron, whereas the Pauli form factors are normalized to the experimental values of the anomalous magnetic moments. The covariant spin structure for the Dirac and Pauli nucleon form factors prescribed by AdS semiclassical gravity incorporates the correct twist scaling behavior from hard scattering and also leads to vector dominance at low energy.

On the pi pi continuum in the nucleon form factors and the proton radius puzzle

We present an improved determination of the continuum contribution to the isovector spectral functions of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. Our analysis includes the most up-to-date results for the partial waves extracted from Roy-Steiner equations, consistent input for the pion vector form factor, and a thorough discussion of isospin-violating effects and uncertainty estimates. As an application, we consider the contribution to the isovector electric and magnetic radii by means of sum rules, which, in combination with the accurately known neutron electric radius, are found to slightly prefer a small proton charge radius.

SUSY under siege from direct and indirect WIMP detection experiments

    Howard Baer🇺🇸 · Vernon Barger🇺🇸 · Hasan Serce🇺🇸

We examine updated prospects for detecting WIMPs in supersymmetric models via direct and indirect dark matter search experiments. We examine several historical and also still viable scenarios: projections for well-tempered neutralinos (WTN), projections from the MasterCode (MC), BayesFits (BF) and Fittino (FO) collaborations, non-thermal wino dark matter (NThW) and finally mixed axion-higgsino dark matter from SUSY with radiatively-driven naturalness (RNS). The WTN is ruled out by recent limits from XENON and LUX collaborations. The NThW scenario, previously on tenuous ground due to gamma-line searches, appears also ruled out by recent combined Fermi-LAT/MAGIC limits combined with new HESS results from continuum gamma rays. Substantial portions of MC parameter space and 1 TeV higgsino parameter space from BF group are ruled out. The 100-300 GeV higgsino-like WIMP from RNS survives due to its possible depleted local abundance (where the axion may make up the bulk of dark matter). Projections from ton-scale noble liquid detectors should discover or rule out WIMPs from the remaining parameter space of these surviving models.

Cosmological Imprints of Frozen-In Light Sterile Neutrinos

    Samuel B. Roland🇺🇸 · Bibhushan Shakya🇺🇸

We investigate observable cosmological aspects of sterile neutrino dark matter produced via the freeze-in mechanism. The study is performed in a framework that admits many cosmologically interesting variations: high temperature production via annihilation processes from higher dimensional operators or low temperature production from decays of a scalar, with the decaying scalar in or out of equilibrium with the thermal bath, in supersymmetric or non-supersymmetric setups, thus allowing us to both extract generic properties and highlight features unique to particular variations. We find that while such sterile neutrinos are generally compatible with all cosmological constraints, interesting scenarios can arise where dark matter is cold, warm, or hot, has nontrivial momentum distributions, or provides contributions to the effective number of relativistic degrees of freedom Neff during Big Bang nucleosynthesis large enough to be probed by future measurements.

Masses of Open-Flavour Heavy-Light Hybrids from QCD Sum-Rules

    J. Ho🇨🇦 · D. Harnett🇨🇦 · T.G. Steele🇨🇦

We use QCD Laplace sum-rules to predict masses of open-flavour heavy-light hybrids where one of the hybrid's constituent quarks is a charm or bottom and the other is an up, down, or strange. We compute leading-order, diagonal correlation functions of several hybrid interpolating currents, taking into account QCD condensates up to dimension-six, and extract hybrid mass predictions for all , as well as explore possible mixing effects with conventional quark-antiquark mesons. Within theoretical uncertainties, our results are consistent with a degeneracy between the heavy-nonstrange and heavy-strange hybrids in all channels. We find a similar mass hierarchy of , , and states (a state lighter than essentially degenerate and states) in both the charm and bottom sectors, and discuss an interpretation for the states. If conventional meson mixing is present the effect is an increase in the hybrid mass prediction, and we estimate an upper bound on this effect.

The Validity of the Weizsacker-Williams Approximation and the Analysis of Beam Dump Experiments: Production of a New Scalar Boson

    Yu-Sheng Liu🇺🇸 · David McKeen🇺🇸 · Gerald A. Miller🇺🇸

Beam dump experiments have been used to search for new particles with null results interpreted in terms of limits on masses and coupling constants . However these limits have been obtained by using approximations [including the Weizsäcker-Williams (WW) approximation] or Monte-Carlo simulations. We display methods, using a new scalar boson as an example, to obtain the cross section and the resulting particle production numbers without using approximations or Monte-Carlo simulations. We show that the approximations cannot be used to obtain accurate values of cross sections. The corresponding exclusion plots differ by substantial amounts when seen on a linear scale. In the event of a discovery, we generate pseudodata (assuming given values of and ) in the currently allowed regions of parameter space. The use of approximations to analyze the pseudodata for the future experiments is shown to lead to considerable errors in determining the parameters. Furthermore, a new region of parameter space can be explored without using one of the common approximations, . Our method can be used as a consistency check for Monte-Carlo simulations.

Multisource thermal model to the transverse momentum spectra in pp collisions at RHIC and LHC energies

In this paper, an improved multi-source thermal model is used to analyze the transverse momentum spectra in collisions at high energies ranging from = 62.4 GeV to 7 TeV. We give a detailed comparison between the theoretical results and experimental data at RHIC and LHC energies. It is shown that the excitation factors of emission sources depend linearly on ln in the framework. Based on the variation regularity of the source-excitation factors, transverse momentum spectra are predicted in collisions at higher energies, potential future colliders operating at = 33 and 100 TeV.

Revisiting gravitino dark matter in thermal leptogenesis

    Masahiro Ibe🇯🇵 · Motoo Suzuki🇯🇵 · Tsutomu T. Yanagida🇯🇵

In this paper, we revisit the gravitino dark matter scenario in the presence of the bilinear -parity violating interaction. In particular, we discuss a consistency with the thermal leptogenesis. For a high reheating temperature required for the thermal leptogenesis, the gravitino dark matter tends to be overproduced, which puts a severe upper limit on the gluino mass. As we will show, a large portion of parameter space of the gravitino dark matter scenario has been excluded by combining the constraints from the gravitino abundance and the null results of the searches for the superparticles at the LHC experiments. In particular, the models with the stau (and other charged slepton) NLSP has been almost excluded by the searches for the long-lived charged particles at the LHC unless the required reheating temperature is somewhat lowered by assuming, for example, a degenerated right-handed neutrino mass spectrum.

Doubly heavy baryon spectra guided by lattice QCD

    H. Garcilazo🇲🇽 · A. Valcarce🇪🇸 · J. Vijande🇪🇸

This paper provides results for the ground state and excited spectra of three-flavored doubly heavy baryons, and . We take advantage of the spin-independent interaction recently obtained to reconcile the lattice SU(3) QCD static potential and the results of nonperturbative lattice QCD for the triply heavy baryon spectra. We show that the spin-dependent potential might be constrained on the basis of nonperturbative lattice QCD results for the spin splittings of three-flavored doubly heavy baryons. Our results may also represent a challenge for future lattice QCD work, because a smaller lattice error could help in distinguishing between different prescriptions for the spin-dependent part of the interaction. Thus, by comparing with the reported baryon spectra obtained with parameters estimated from lattice QCD, one can challenge the precision of lattice calculations. The present work supports a coherent description of singly, doubly and triply heavy baryons with the same Cornell-like interacting potential. The possible experimental measurement of these states at LHCb is an incentive for this study.

Power corrections to the electromagnetic spectral function and the dilepton rate in QCD plasma within operator product expansion in D=4

    Aritra Bandyopadhyay🇮🇳 · Munshi G Mustafa🇮🇳

We evaluate the electromagnetic spectral function in QCD plasma in a nonperturbative background of in-medium quark and gluon condensates by incorporating the leading order power corrections in a systematic framework within the ambit of the operator product expansion in D=4 dimension. We explicitly show that the mixing of the composite operators removes mass singularities and renders Wilson coefficients finite and well defined. As a spectral property, we then obtain the nonperturbative dilepton production rate from QCD plasma. The operator product expansion automatically restricts the dilepton rate to the intermediate mass range, which is found to be enhanced due to the power corrections. We also compare our result with those from nonperturbative calculations, e.g., lattice QCD and effective QCD models based on Polyakov loop.

Avoiding the Goldstone Boson Catastrophe in general renormalisable field theories at two loops

    Johannes Braathen🇫🇷 · Mark D. Goodsell🇫🇷

We show how the infra-red divergences associated to Goldstone bosons in the minimum condition of the two-loop Landau-gauge effective potential can be avoided in general field theories. This extends the resummation formalism recently developed for the Standard Model and the MSSM, and we give compact, infra-red finite expressions in closed form for the tadpole equations. We also show that the results at this loop order are equivalent to (and are most easily obtained by) imposing an "on-shell" condition for the Goldstone bosons. Moreover, we extend the approach to show how the infra-red divergences in the calculation of the masses of neutral scalars (such as the Higgs boson) can be eliminated. For the mass computation, we specialise to the gaugeless limit and extend the effective potential computation to allow the masses to be determined without needing to solve differential equations for the loop functions -- opening the door to fast, infra-red safe determinations of the Higgs mass in general theories.

They exhibit very different energy dependences. We use the longitudinal polarization of Lambda hyperon and the spin alignment of as examples and present numerical results of energy dependences. We present the results at the leading twist with perturbative QCD evolutions of fragmentation functions at the leading order.

Implication of Sterile Fermions in Particle Physics and Cosmology

    Michele Lucente🇫🇷

The neutrino mass generation mechanism, the nature of dark matter and the origin of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe are three compelling questions that cannot be accounted for in the Standard Model of particle physics. In this thesis we focus on all these issues by providing a possible solution in terms of a minimal extension of the Standard Model, consisting in the addition of a set of sterile fermions to the field content of the theory. Sterile fermions are gauge singlet fields, that can interact via mixing with the active neutrinos. We focus on the Inverse Seesaw mechanism, which is characterised by a low (TeV or lower) new physics scale and that can be tested in current and future experimental facilities. We present the model building analysis that points towards the minimal realisations of the mechanism, and the phenomenological study in order to accommodate light neutrino masses and to impose all the relevant experimental constraints in the model, as well as the expected experimental signatures. We show the viability of the sterile neutrino hypothesis as dark matter component, together with the characteristic features of this scenario in the minimal Inverse Seesaw mechanism. The possibility of successfully accounting for the baryon asymmetry in a testable realisation of the leptogenesis mechanism is also addressed. On the other hand it is important to look for manifestations of sterile fermions in laboratory experiments. We address this point by making predictions for the expected rates of rare lepton number violating decays of vector bosons, that can be mediated by sterile fermions, as well as by studying the impact of sterile fermions on global fit of electroweak precision data.

    A Modern Approach to Superradiance

    Solomon Endlich🇺🇸 · Riccardo Penco🇺🇸

In this paper, we provide a simple and modern discussion of rotational superradiance based on quantum field theory. We work with an effective theory valid at scales much larger than the size of the spinning object responsible for superradiance. Within this framework, the probability of absorption by an object at rest completely determines the superradiant amplification rate when that same object is spinning. We first discuss in detail superradiant scattering of spin 0 particles with orbital angular momentum , and then extend our analysis to higher values of orbital angular momentum and spin. Along the way, we provide a simple derivation of vacuum friction---a "quantum torque" acting on spinning objects in empty space. Our results apply not only to black holes but to arbitrary spinning objects. We also discuss superradiant instability due to formation of bound states and, as an illustration, we calculate the instability rate for bound states with massive spin 1 particles. For a black hole with mass and angular velocity , we find when the particle's Compton wavelength is much greater than the size of the spinning object. This rate is parametrically much larger than the instability rate for spin 0 particles, which scales like . This enhanced instability rate can be used to constrain the existence of ultralight particles beyond the Standard Model.

Dark Energy and Dark Matter in a Model of an Axion Coupled to a Non-Abelian Gauge Field

    Stephon Alexander🇺🇸 · Robert Brandenberger🇨🇦 · Juerg Froehlich🇨🇭

We study cosmological field configurations (solutions) in a model in which the pseudo-scalar phase of a complex field couples to the Pontryagin density of a massive non-abelian gauge field, in analogy to how the Peccei-Quinn axion field couples to the -color gauge field of QCD. Assuming that the self-interaction potential of the complex scalar field has the typical {\it Mexican hat} form, we find that the radial fluctuations of this field can act as {\it Dark Matter}, while its phase may give rise to tracking {\it Dark Energy}. In our model, Dark-Energy domination will, however, not continue for ever. A new component of dark matter, namely the one originating from the gauge field, will dominate in the future.

    Chiral Shock Waves

    Srimoyee Sen🇺🇸 · Naoki Yamamoto🇯🇵

We study the shock waves in relativistic chiral matter. We argue that the conventional Rankine-Hugoinot relations are modified due to the presence of chiral transport phenomena. We show that the entropy discontinuity in a weak shock wave is quadratic in the pressure discontinuity when the effect of chiral transport becomes sufficiently large. We also show that rarefaction shock waves, which do not exist in usual nonchiral fluids, can appear in chiral matter. The direction of shock wave propagation in a vorticity is found to be completely determined by the direction of the vorticity and the chirality of fermions. These features are exemplified by shock propagation in dense neutrino matter in the hydrodynamic regime.

Classical and quantum dynamics of a charged scalar particle in a background of two counterpropagating plane waves

    B. King🇬🇧 · H. Hu🇨🇳

We consider a scalar particle in a background formed by two counter-propagating plane waves. Two cases are studied: i) dynamics at a magnetic node and ii) zero initial transverse canonical momentum. The Lorentz and Klein-Gordon equations are solved for these cases and approximations analysed. For the magnetic node solution (homogeneous, time-dependent electric field), the modified Volkov wavefunction which arises from a high-energy approximation is found to be inaccurate for all energies and the solution itself unstable when photon emission (nonlinear Compton scattering) is included. For the zero initial transverse canonical momentum case, in both quantum and classical cases, forbidden parameter regimes, absent in the plane wave model, are identified.
