    Semi-classical approaches to heavy-ion reactions: fusion, rainbow, and glory

    A semi-classical approximation has been a powerful tool in understanding the dynamics of low-energy heavy-ion reactions. Here we discuss two topics in this regard, for which Mahir Hussein was a world leading pioneer. The first topic is heavy-ion fusion reactions of neutron-rich nuclei, in which the breakup process of the projectile nucleus plays a crucial role. The second is rainbow and glory scattering, for which characteristic oscillatory patterns in differential cross sections can be well understood in terms of intereferences among several semi-classical trajectories.

    Spin-polarized -stable neutron star matter: the nuclear symmetry energy and GW170817 constraint

    Magnetic field of rotating pulsar might be so strong that the equation of state (EOS) of neutron star (NS) matter is significantly affected by the spin polarization of baryons. In the present work, the EOS of the spin-polarized nuclear matter is investigated in the nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock formalism, using a realistic density dependent nucleon-nucleon interaction with its spin and spin-isospin dependence accurately adjusted to the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock results for the spin-polarized nuclear matter. The nuclear symmetry energy and proton fraction are found to increase significantly with the increasing spin polarization of baryons, leading to a larger probability of the direct Urca process in the cooling of magnetar. The EOS of the -stable np matter obtained at different spin polarizations of baryons is used as the input for the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations to determine the hydrostatic configuration of NS. Based on the GW170817 constraint on the radius of NS with , our mean-field results show that up to of baryons in the NS merger might be spin-polarized. This result supports the magnetar origin of the blue kilonova ejecta of GW170817 suggested by Metzger et al., and the spin polarization of baryons needs, therefore, to be properly treated in the many-body calculation of the EOS of NS matter before comparing the calculated NS mass and radius with those constrained by the multi-messenger GW170817 observation.

    3-Dimensional QCD Phase Diagrams for Strange Matter

    In this work, we examine in detail the difference between constraining the electric charge fraction and isospin fraction when calculating the deconfinement phase transition in the presence of net strangeness. We present relations among charge and isospin fractions and the corresponding chemical potentials and draw 3-dimensional QCD phase diagrams for matter out of weak equilibrium. Finally, we briefly discuss how our results can be applied to comparisons of matter created in heavy ion collisions and binary neutron star mergers.

    Spin-Vorticity Coupling for Massive Vector Mesons

    Recent experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have indicated that hadrons containing strange quarks produced in non-central heavy ion collisions can be polarized. We investigate in detail the coupling of spin and vorticity for electrically neutral, massive vector bosons using the Proca equation, and provide the nonrelativistic reduction of the field equations via a single Foldy--Wouthuysen transformation. We find that the resulting Hamiltonian is not-Hermitian, but invariant, and involves a spin dependent term to leading order in vorticity. We also calculate further relativistic and quantum corrections to the Hamiltonian.

    Equation of state of strongly magnetized matter with hyperons and -resonances

    We construct a new equation of state for the baryonic matter under an intense magnetic field within the framework of covariant density functional theory. The composition of matter includes hyperons as well as -resonances. The extension of the nucleonic functional to the hypernuclear sector is constrained by the experimental data on and -hypernuclei. We find that the equation of state stiffens with the inclusion of the magnetic field, which increases the maximum mass of neutron star compared to the non-magnetic case. In addition, the strangeness fraction in the matter is enhanced. Several observables, like the Dirac effective mass, particle abundances, etc show typical oscillatory behavior as a function of the magnetic field and/or density which is traced back to the occupation pattern of Landau levels.
