    Highlights from the NA61/SHINE experiment

Antoni Marcinek (for the NA61/SHINE Collaboration)🇵🇱

The NA61/SHINE experiment is a fixed-target, broad acceptance facility at the CERN SPS. This contribution summarizes the most recent results from the strong interactions NA61/SHINE programme and presents news on the detector upgrade in preparation for the future data taking. The strong interactions programme consists in a two-dimensional scan in beam momentum (from 13A to 150A/158A GeV/c, \sqrt{s_{NN}} from 5.1 to 17.3 GeV) and system size (p + p, Be + Be, Ar + Sc, Xe + La reactions). The experiment searches for the second-order critical end-point in the temperature versus baryo-chemical potential phase diagram and studies the properties of the onset of deconfinement discovered by its predecessor, NA49 at the CERN SPS. The presented results include K/{\pi} multiplicity ratios as a function of energy and system size, singly and multi-strange hadron production in p + p reactions, multiplicity and net-charge fluctuations measured by higher order moments in p + p, Be + Be and Ar + Sc collisions, proton and charged hadron intermittency in Ar + Sc and Pb + Pb reactions, HBT measurements in Ar + Sc and collective electromagnetic effects in Ar + Sc collisions.

Bethe-Salpeter kernel and properties of strange-quark mesons

    Zhen-Ni Xu🇨🇳 · Zhao-Qian Yao🇨🇳 · Si-Xue Qin🇨🇳 · Zhu-Fang Cui🇨🇳 · Craig D. Roberts🇨🇳

Focusing on the continuum meson bound-state problem, a novel method is used to calculate closed-form Bethe-Salpeter kernels that are symmetry consistent with any reasonable gluon-quark vertex, , and therewith deliver a Poincaré-invariant treatment of the spectrum and decay constants of the ground- and first-excited states of , , mesons. The predictions include masses of as-yet unseen states and many unmeasured decay constants. The analysis reveals that a realistic, unified description of meson properties (including level orderings and mass splittings) requires a sound expression of emergent hadron mass in bound-state kernels; alternatively, that such properties may reveal much about the emergence of mass in the standard model.

Ground state correlations on ground state densities and total binding energies of 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb

    F. Minato🇯🇵 · H. Sagawa🇯🇵 · S. Yoshida

Neutron and proton densities of doubly-closed shell nuclei 40Ca, 48Ca and 208Pb are studied based on a Hartree-Fock model with SAMi, SAMi-J27 and SAMi-T energy density functionals (EDFs). The ground state correlations (GSC) induced by isoscalar and isovector phonons are also evaluated by the second order perturbation theory with a self-consistent random phase approximation (RPA). We found that the interior part of the ground state densities is reduced by the GSC in consistent with the experimental data. On the other hand, the GSC enhances the neutron skin thickness of 48Ca and 208Pb. The effect of GSC on the total binding energy is also evaluated by the quasi-boson approximation. The effect of the tensor interaction is found small on both the density distributions and the binding energies.

Realization of an advanced super-mirror solid-state neutron polarizer for the instrument PF1B at the Institut Laue-Langevin

    A.K. Petoukhov🇫🇷 · V.V. Nesvizhevsky🇫🇷 · T. Bigault🇫🇷 · P. Courtois🇫🇷 · A. Devishvili🇫🇷 · D. Jullien🇫🇷 · T. Soldner🇫🇷

In this last of a series of three papers on the development of an advanced solid-state neutron polarizer, we present the final construction of the polarizer and the results of its commissioning. The polarizer uses spin-selective reflection of neutrons by interfaces coated with polarizing super-mirrors. The polarizer is built entirely in-house for the PF1B cold neutron beam facility at the Institut Max von Laue - Paul Langevin (ILL). It has been installed in the PF1B casemate and tested at real conditions. The average transmission for the "good" spin component is measured to be >30 %. The polarization averaged over the capture spectrum reaches a record value of Pn ~ 0.997 for the full angular divergence in the neutron beam, delivered by the H113 neutron guide, and the full wavelength band lambda of 0.3-2.0 nm. This unprecedented performance is due to a series of innovations in the design and fabrication in the following domains: choice of the substrate material, super-mirror and anti-reflecting multilayer coatings, magnetizing field, assembling process. The polarizer is used for user experiments at PF1B since the last reactor cycle in 2020.
