Re-evaluation of the Ne()Mg and Ne()Mg reaction rates

    Philip Adsley🇫🇷 · Umberto Battino🇬🇧 · Andreas Best🇮🇹 · Antonio Caciolli🇮🇹 · Alessandra Guglielmetti🇮🇹 · Gianluca Imbriani🇮🇹 · Heshani Jayatissa🇺🇸 · Marco La Cognata🇮🇹 · Livio Lamia🇮🇹 · Eliana Masha🇮🇹 · Cristian Massimi🇮🇹 · Sara Palmerini🇮🇹 · Ashley Tattersall🇬🇧 · Raphael Hirschi🇬🇧

The competing Ne()Mg and Ne()Mg reactions control the production of neutrons for the weak -process in massive and AGB stars. In both systems, the ratio between the corresponding reaction rates strongly impacts the total neutron budget and strongly influences the final nucleosynthesis. The Ne()Mg and Ne()Mg reaction rates was re-evaluated by using newly available information on Mg given by various recent experimental studies. Evaluations of The evaluated Ne()Mg reaction rate remains substantially similar to that of Longland {\it et al.} but, including recent results from Texas A\&M, the Ne()Mg reaction rate is lower at a range of astrophysically important temperatures. Stellar models computed with NEWTON and MESA predict decreased production of the weak branch -process due to the decreased efficiency of Ne as a neutron source. Using the new reaction rates in the MESA model results in Zr/Zr and Ba/Ba ratios in much better agreement with the measured ratios from presolar SiC grains.

J/ elliptic and triangular flow in Pb-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV

    ALICE Collaboration

The inclusive J/ elliptic () and triangular () flow coefficients measured at forward rapidity (2.5 4) and the measured at midrapidity ( 0.9) in Pb-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector at the LHC are reported. The entire Pb-Pb data sample collected during Run 2 is employed, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 750 b at forward rapidity and 93 b at midrapidity. The results are obtained using the scalar product method and are reported as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality. At midrapidity, the J/ is in agreement with the forward rapidity measurement. The centrality averaged results indicate a positive J/ with a significance of more than 5 at forward rapidity in the range GeV/. The forward rapidity , , and / results at low and intermediate ( GeV/) exhibit a mass hierarchy when compared to pions and D mesons, while converging into a species-independent curve at higher . At low and intermediate , the results could be interpreted in terms of a later thermalization of charm quarks compared to light quarks, while at high , path-length dependent effects seem to dominate. The J/ measurements are further compared to a microscopic transport model calculation. Using a simplified extension of the quark scaling approach involving both light and charm quark flow components, it is shown that the D-meson measurements can be described based on those for charged pions and J/ flow.

    Soft-dielectron excess in proton-proton collisions at = 13 TeV

    ALICE Collaboration

A measurement of dielectron production in proton-proton (pp) collisions at TeV, recorded with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, is presented in this Letter. The data set was recorded with a reduced magnetic solenoid field. This enables the investigation of a kinematic domain at low dielectron invariant mass and pair transverse momentum that was previously inaccessible at the LHC. The cross section for dielectron production is studied as a function of , , and event multiplicity . The expected dielectron rate from hadron decays, called hadronic cocktail, utilizes a parametrization of the measured ratio in pp and proton-nucleus (p-A) collisions, assuming that this ratio shows no strong dependence on collision energy at low transverse momentum. Comparison of the measured dielectron yield to the hadronic cocktail at GeV/ and for GeV/ indicates an enhancement of soft dielectrons, reminiscent of the 'anomalous' soft-photon and -dilepton excess in hadron-hadron collisions reported by several experiments under different experimental conditions. The enhancement factor over the hadronic cocktail amounts to in the ALICE acceptance. Acceptance-corrected excess spectra in and are extracted and compared with calculations of dielectron production from hadronic bremsstrahlung and thermal radiation within a hadronic many-body approach.

In this work we measured elastic and inelastic angular distributions of the weakly bound 9Be projectile on the 197Au target at several bombarding energies from 84% up to 140% of the Coulomb barrier. The elastic angular distributions were analyzed using a phenomenological Woods-Saxon potential and a double folding Sao Paulo potential and the energy dependence was extracted. Angular distributions from two inelastic peaks were compared with coupled channel calculations using reduced transition probabilities available in the literature. The energy dependence of the two interaction potential models show a similar trend in the region of the Coulomb barrier. Dispersion relation calculation demonstrates the presence of the breakup threshold anomaly proposed for weakly bound systems.

Dilepton Radiation from Strongly Interacting Systems

    Piotr Salabura🇵🇱 · Joachim Stroth🇩🇪

We review the current understanding of time-like virtual photon emission from QCD matter. The phenomenology of dilepton emission is discussed and basic theoretical concepts are introduced. The experimental findings are presented, grouped into production of lepton pairs in elementary processes, production off cold nuclear matter and emission from heavy-ion collisions. The review emphasizes the role of dilepton emission as tool for studying exotic phases of QCD matter. Open questions and a route to probe the QCD phase diagram with dileptons are outlined.

Measurement of isolated photon-hadron correlations in = 5.02 TeV pp and p-Pb collisions

    ALICE Collaboration

This paper presents isolated photon-hadron correlations using pp and p-Pb data collected by the ALICE detector at the LHC. For photons with || < 0.67 and 12 < < 40 GeV/, the associated yield of charged particles in the range || < 0.80 and 0.5 < < 10 GeV/ is presented. These momenta are much lower than previous measurements at the LHC. No significant difference between pp and p-Pb is observed, with PYTHIA 8.2 describing both data sets within uncertainties. This measurement constrains nuclear effects on the parton fragmentation in p-Pb collisions, and provides a benchmark for future studies of Pb-Pb collisions.

Elliptic and triangular flow of (anti)deuterons in Pb-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV

    ALICE Collaboration

The measurements of the (anti)deuterons elliptic flow () and the first measurements of triangular flow () in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collisions = 5.02 TeV are presented. A mass ordering at low transverse momentum () is observed when comparing these measurements with those of other identified hadrons, as expected from relativistic hydrodynamics. The measured (anti)deuterons lies between the predictions from the simple coalescence and blast-wave models, which provide a good description of the data only for more peripheral and for more central collisions, respectively. The mass number scaling, which is violated for , is approximately valid for the (anti)deuterons . The measured and are also compared with the predictions from a coalescence approach with phase-space distributions of nucleons generated by iEBE-VISHNU with AMPT initial conditions coupled with UrQMD, and from a dynamical model based on relativistic hydrodynamics coupled to the hadronic afterburner SMASH. The model predictions are consistent with the data within the uncertainties in mid-central collisions, while a deviation is observed in central centrality intervals.

Constraining the Chiral Magnetic Effect with charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV

    ALICE Collaboration

Systematic studies of charge-dependent two- and three-particle correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV used to probe the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) are presented. These measurements are performed for charged particles in the pseudorapidity () and transverse momentum () ranges and GeV/. A significant charge-dependent signal that becomes more pronounced for peripheral collisions is reported for the CME-sensitive correlators and . The results are used to estimate the contribution of background effects, associated with local charge conservation coupled to anisotropic flow modulations, to measurements of the CME. A blast-wave parametrisation that incorporates local charge conservation tuned to reproduce the centrality dependent background effects is not able to fully describe the measured . Finally, the charge and centrality dependence of mixed-harmonics three-particle correlations, of the form , which are insensitive to the CME signal, verify again that background contributions dominate the measurement of .

Probing short-range correlations in the deuteron via incoherent diffractive production with spectator tagging at the EIC

    Zhoudunming Tu🇺🇸 · Alexander Jentsch🇺🇸 · Mark Baker🇺🇸 · Liang Zheng🇨🇳 · Jeong-Hun Lee🇺🇸 · Raju Venugopalan🇺🇸 · Or Hen🇺🇸 · Douglas Higinbotham🇺🇸 · Elke-Caroline Aschenauer🇺🇸 · Thomas Ullrich🇺🇸

Understanding the role of Quantum Chromodynamics in generating nuclear forces is important for uncovering the mechanism of short-ranged nuclear interactions and their manifestation in short range correlations (SRC). The future Electron-Ion-Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory in the US will provide an unprecedented opportunity to systematically investigate the underlying physics of SRC for energies and kinematic regions that are otherwise impossible to reach. We study SRCs in electron-deuteron scattering events using the Monte Carlo event generator BeAGLE. Specifically, we investigate the sensitivity of observables to high internal nucleon momentum in incoherent diffractive vector meson production. In a plane wave impulse approximation, the initial state deuteron wavefunction can be accessed directly from the four-momentum of the spectator nucleon. We use realistic physics simulations and far-forward detector simulations of the EIC to fully reveal the physics potential of this exclusive process. In particular, we provide the luminosity and detector requirements necessary to study SRCs in the deuteron at an EIC.

Light-nuclei production and search for the QCD critical point

    Edward Shuryak🇺🇸 · Juan M. Torres-Rincon🇩🇪

We discuss the potential of light-nuclei measurement in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies for the search of the hypothetical QCD critical end-point. A previous proposal based on neutron density fluctuations has brought appealing experimental evidences of a maximum in a ratio involving tritons, protons and deuterons, . However these results are difficult to reconcile with the state-of-the-art statistical thermal model predictions. Based on the idea that the QCD critical point can lead to a substantial attraction among nucleons, we propose new ratios involving He in which the maximum would be more evident. We argue that the experimental extraction is feasible by presenting actual measurements at low and high collision energies. We also illustrate the possible behavior of these ratios at intermediate energies applying the semiclassical method based on flucton paths using preliminary STAR data for .

Measurement of jet-medium interactions via direct photon-hadron correlations in AuAu and Au collisions at GeV

    U. Acharya · A. Adare · S. Afanasiev · C. Aidala · N.N. Ajitanand · Y. Akiba · R. Akimoto · H. Al-Bataineh · J. Alexander · H. Al-Ta'ani · A. Angerami · K. Aoki and 567 other authors

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A AuAu, Au and collisions, for direct photon from 5--12 GeV/, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in AuAu compared to and Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in AuAu increases to an excess over the yield in collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

    The GlueX Beamline and Detector

    S. Adhikari · C.S.Akondi · H.Al Ghoul · A. Ali · M. Amaryan · E.G. Anassontzis · A.Austregesilo · F. Barbosa · J. Barlow · A. Barnes · E. Barriga · R. Barsotti and 178 other authors

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. We describe the photon beam, the GlueX detector components, electronics, data-acquisition and monitoring systems, and the performance of the experiment during the first three years of operation.

Production of at forward rapidity in + collisions at GeV

The cross section of bottom quark-antiquark () production in + collisions at GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The results are based on the yield of high mass, like-sign muon pairs measured within the PHENIX muon arm acceptance (). The signal is extracted from like-sign dimuons by utilizing the unique properties of neutral meson oscillation. We report a differential cross section of nb for like-sign muons in the rapidity and ranges and GeV/, and dimuon mass of 5--10 GeV/. The extrapolated total cross section at this energy for production is b. The total cross section is compared to a perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculation and is consistent within uncertainties. The azimuthal opening angle between muon pairs from decays and their distributions are compared to distributions generated using {\sc ps pythia 6}, which includes next-to-leading order processes. The azimuthal correlations and pair distribution are not very well described by {\sc pythia} calculations, but are still consistent within uncertainties. Flavor creation and flavor excitation subprocesses are favored over gluon splitting.

Running the gamut of high energy nuclear collisions

    Bjoern Schenke🇺🇸 · Chun Shen🇺🇸 · Prithwish Tribedy🇺🇸

We present calculations of bulk properties and multiparticle correlations in a large variety of collision systems within a hybrid formalism consisting of IP-Glasma initial conditions, MUSIC viscous relativistic hydrodynamics, and UrQMD microscopic hadronic transport. In particular, we study heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including Pb+Pb, Xe+Xe, and O+O collisions, and Au+Au, U+U, Ru+Ru, Zr+Zr, and O+O collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We further study asymmetric systems, including p+Au, d+Au, He+Au, and p+Pb collisions at various energies as well as p+p collisions at 0.5 and 13 TeV. We describe experimental observables in all heavy ion systems well with one fixed set of parameters, validating the energy and system dependence of the framework. Many observables in the smaller systems are also well described, although they test the limits of the model. Calculations of O+O collisions provide predictions for potential future runs at RHIC and LHC.

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider measured and mesons at midrapidity in UU collisions at GeV in a wide transverse momentum range. Measurements were performed in the decay modes. A strong suppression of and meson production at high transverse momentum was observed in central UU collisions relative to binary scaled results. Yields of and mesons measured in UU collisions show similar suppression pattern to the ones measured in AuAu collisions at GeV for similar numbers of participant nucleons. The / ratios do not show dependence on centrality or transverse momentum, and are consistent with previously measured values in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, nucleus-nucleus, and collisions.

Sensitivity of Ti and Ni production in CCSN shock-driven nucleosynthesis to reaction rates

    Shiv K. Subedi🇺🇸 · Zach Meisel🇺🇸 · Grant Merz

Recent observational advances have enabled high resolution mapping of Ti in core-collapse supernova (CCSN) remnants. Comparisons between observations and models provide stringent constraints on the CCSN mechanism. However, past work has identified several uncertain nuclear reaction rates that influence Ti and Ni production in post-processing model calculations. We evolved one dimensional models of , , and stars from zero-age main sequence through CCSN using {\tt MESA} (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) and investigated the previously identified reaction rate sensitivities of Ti and Ni production. We tested the robustness of our results by making various assumptions about the CCSN explosion energy and mass-cut. We found a number of reactions that have a significant impact on the nucleosynthesis of Ti and Ni, particularly for lower progenitor masses. Notably, the reaction rates , , , , , , , , , , and are influential for a large number of model conditions. Furthermore, we found the list of influential reactions identified by previous post-processing studies of CCSN shock-driven nucleosynthesis is likely incomplete, motivating future larger-scale sensitivity studies.
