Theia: An advanced optical neutrino detector

    M. Askins🇺🇸 · Z. Bagdasarian🇩🇪 · N. Barros🇵🇹 · E.W. Beier🇺🇸 · E. Blucher🇺🇸 · R. Bonventre🇺🇸 · E. Callaghan🇺🇸 · J. Caravaca🇺🇸 · M. Diwan🇺🇸 · S.T. Dye🇺🇸 · J. Eisch🇺🇸 · A. Elagin🇺🇸 and 66 other authors

New developments in liquid scintillators, high-efficiency, fast photon detectors, and chromatic photon sorting have opened up the possibility for building a large-scale detector that can discriminate between Cherenkov and scintillation signals. Such a detector could exploit these two distinct signals to observe particle direction and species using Cherenkov light while also having the excellent energy resolution and low threshold of a scintillator detector. Situated in a deep underground laboratory, and utilizing new techniques in computing and reconstruction techniques, such a detector could achieve unprecedented levels of background rejection, thus enabling a rich physics program that would span topics in nuclear, high-energy, and astrophysics, and across a dynamic range from hundreds of keV to many GeV. The scientific program would include observations of low- and high-energy solar neutrinos, determination of neutrino mass ordering and measurement of the neutrino CP violating phase, observations of diffuse supernova neutrinos and neutrinos from a supernova burst, sensitive searches for nucleon decay and, ultimately, a search for NeutrinoLess Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) with sensitivity reaching the normal ordering regime of neutrino mass phase space. This paper describes Theia, a detector design that incorporates these new technologies in a practical and affordable way to accomplish the science goals described above. We consider two scenarios, one in which Theia would reside in a cavern the size and shape of the caverns intended to be excavated for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) which we call Theia 25, and a larger 100 ktonne version (Theia 100) that could achieve an even broader and more sensitive scientific program.

How well do we know neutrino-electron scattering? EFT approach

    Oleksandr Tomalak🇺🇸

We determine the effective theory of neutrino-electron and neutrino-quark scattering and provide the most precise up-to-date prediction for neutrino-electron scattering cross sections quantifying errors for the first time to be of order . Radiative corrections in the theory with electron and neutrinos only involve three effective couplings. One is the Fermi constant which is known with sub-ppm accuracy. Another one has a small error of order . The uncertainty of the third one is limited by the knowledge of hadronic contributions to charge-isospin vector-vector correlation function.

Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions from Large-Momentum Effective Theory

    Xiangdong Ji🇺🇸 · Yizhuang Liu🇨🇳 · Yu-Sheng Liu🇨🇳

We show that transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs), important non-perturbative quantities for describing the properties of hadrons in high-energy scattering processes such as Drell-Yan and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering with observed small transverse momentum, can be obtained from Euclidean QCD calculations in the framework of large-momentum effective theory (LaMET). We present a LaMET factorization of the Euclidean quasi-TMDPDFs in terms of the physical TMDPDFs and off-light-cone soft function at leading order in expansion, with the perturbative matching coefficient satisfying a renormalization group equation. We also discuss the implementation in lattice QCD with finite-length gauge links as well as the rapidity-regularization-independent factorization for Drell-Yan cross section.

    Miniature Neutron Spectrometer for Space

    C. Potiriadis · I. Kazas · C. Papadimitropoulos · C. P. Lambropoulos

MIDAS is a miniature detector developed with purpose to assess the radiation field parameters near to an astronaut. Part of the device is a spectrometer for fast neutrons. In missions outside the geomagnetic field, fast neutrons are secondary products of the interaction of Galactic Cosmic Ray heavy ions with the materials in the spaceship or even the astronaut body. The Relative Biological Effectiveness of fast neutrons is high. The neutron spectrometer first prototype has been developed, calibrated and used for measuring 252Cf spectra.

Theoretical study of isotope productions by muon capture reaction on

    Maureen Ciccarelli🇯🇵 · Futoshi Minato🇯🇵 · Tomoya Naito🇯🇵

The isotope , the generator of used for diagnostic imaging, is supplied by extracting from fission fragments of highly enriched uranium in reactors. However, a reactor-free production method of is searched over the world from the point of view of nuclear proliferation. Recently, production through a muon capture reaction was proposed and it was found that about of turned into through reaction [arXiv:1908.08166]. However, the detailed physical process of the muon capture reaction is not completely understood. We, therefore, study the muon capture reaction of by a theoretical approach. We used the proton-neutron QRPA to calculate the muon capture rate. The muon wave function is calculated with considering the electronic distribution of the atom and the nuclear charge distribution. The particle evaporation process from the daughter nucleus is calculated by a statistical model. From the model calculation, about of is converted to through the muon capture reaction, which is in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. It is revealed that negative parity states, especially state, play an important role in . The feasibility of production by the muon capture reaction is also discussed. Isotope production by the muon capture reaction strongly depends on the nuclear structure.

Jet-fluid interaction in the EPOS3-Jet framework

    Iurii Karpenko🇫🇷 · Joerg Aichelin🇫🇷 · Pol Bernard Gossiaux🇫🇷 · Martin Rohrmoser🇵🇱 · Klaus Werner🇫🇷

EPOS3-Jet is an integrated framework for jet modelling in heavy ion collisions, where the initial hard (jet) partons are produced along with soft (medium) partons in the initial state EPOS approach. The jet partons then propagate in the hydrodynamically expanding medium. The energy and momentum lost by the jet partons is added to the hydrodynamic medium via the source terms. The full evolution proceeds in a concurrent mode, without separating hydrodynamic and jet parts. In this report, we examine the medium recoil effects in Pb-Pb collisions at TeV LHC energy in the EPOS3-Jet framework.
