A new study of the B(p,)Be reaction from 0.35 to 1.8 MeV

    A. Caciolli🇮🇹 · R. Depalo🇮🇹 · V. Rigato🇮🇹

The quantification of isotopes content in materials is extremely important in many research and industrial fields. Accurate determination of boron concentration is very critical in semiconductor, superconductor and steel industry, in environmental and medical applications as well as in nuclear and astrophysics research. The detection of B isotopes and of their ratio in synthetic and natural materials may be accomplished by gamma spectroscopy using the B(p,)Be and B(p,)C reactions at low proton energy. Here, the B(p,)Be cross section is reported in the center of mass energy range 0.35 to 1.8 MeV. The = 429 keV rays were detected at 45 and 90 using a NaI(Tl) and an HPGe detectors, respectively. In the presented energy range, previous cross sections data revealed discrepancies and normalisation issues. Existing data are compared to the new absolute measurement and discussed. The present data have been subtracted from a previous measurement of the total cross section to derive the contribution of the channel.

Spin-Density Matrix Elements for Vector Meson Photoproduction at GlueX

    A. Austregesilo (for the GlueX Collaboration)🇺🇸

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab aims to study the light meson spectrum with an emphasis on the search for hybrid mesons. To this end, a linearly-polarized GeV photon beam impinges on a hydrogen target contained within a detector with near-complete neutral and charged particle coverage. In 2018, the experiment completed its first phase of data taking in its design configuration and the quantity of analyzed data already exceed that of previous experiments for polarized photoproduction in this energy regime by orders of magnitude. Polarization observables such as spin-density matrix elements provide valuable input for the theoretical description of the production mechanism, which will be essential for the interpretation of possible exotic meson signals. We present results for the photoproduction of vector mesons, focusing on the unprecedented statistical precision of the spin-density matrix elements for the meson.

Neutrino Detectors as Tools for Nuclear Security

    Adam Bernstein🇺🇸 · Nathaniel Bowden🇺🇸 · Bethany L. Goldblum🇺🇸 · Patrick Huber🇺🇸 · Igor Jovanovic🇺🇸 · John Mattingly🇺🇸

For over 40 years, physicists have considered possible uses for neutrino detectors in nuclear nonproliferation, arms control, and fissile materials security. Neutrinos are an attractive fission signature because they readily pass through matter. The same property makes neutrinos challenging to detect in systems that would be practical for nuclear security applications. This colloquium presents a broad overview of several potential neutrino applications, including the near-field monitoring of known reactors, far-field monitoring of known or discovery of undeclared reactors, detection of reactor waste streams, and detection of nuclear explosions. We conclude that recent detector advances have made near-field monitoring feasible. Farther-field reactor detection and waste stream detection monitoring are possible in some cases with further research and development. Very long-range reactor monitoring and nuclear explosion detection do not appear feasible for the foreseeable future due to considerable physical and/or practical constraints.

Global fits of the SM parameters

    Jens Erler🇩🇪

I present a global survey of weak mixing angle measurements and other precision experiments and discuss the issue of correlations of the theoretical uncertainties in precision observables. Hadronic vacuum polarization effects complicate global fits in various ways and are also covered alongside some representative fit results.

Electroweak Precision Tests of the SM

    Jens Erler🇩🇪

A global survey of weak mixing angle measurements at low and high energies is presented. Then I will discuss theoretical uncertainties in precision observables with special emphasis on their correlations. The important role of vacuum polarization in global fits will also be addressed before fit results are presented.

Dark Matter at the Intensity Frontier: the new MESA electron accelerator facility

    Luca Doria🇩🇪 · Patrick Achenbach🇩🇪 · Mirco Christmann🇩🇪 · Achim Denig🇩🇪 · Harald Merkel🇩🇪

Dark Matter is being searched with a variety of methods, each of which tackles this challenge focusing on different kinds of particles, masses and couplings. Here we describe Dark Matter searches conducted with accelerators and fixed targets. In particular, we highlight the contribution of the experiments being built at the new Mainz Energy-recovery Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) facility. MESA will provide intense electron beams for hadron and nuclear physics, as well as for Dark Matter searches with competitive sensitivities.
