Experimental investigation of -condensation in light nuclei

Method: To examine signatures of this alpha-condensation, a compound nucleus reaction using 160, 280, and 400 MeV 16O beams impinging on a carbon target was used to investigate the 12C(16O,7a) reaction. This permits a search for near-threshold states in the alpha-conjugate nuclei up to 24Mg. Results: Events up to an alpha-particle multiplicity of 7 were measured and the results were compared to both an Extended Hauser-Feshbach calculation and the Fermi break-up model. The measured multiplicity distribution exceeded that predicted from a sequential decay mechanism and had a better agreement with the multi-particle Fermi break-up model. Examination of how these 7 alpha final states could be reconstructed to form 8Be and 12C(0_2+) showed a quantitative difference in which decay modes were dominant compared to the Fermi break-up model. No new states were observed in 16O, 20Ne, and 24Mg due to the effect of the N-alpha penetrability suppressing the total alpha-particle dissociation decay mode. Conclusion: The reaction mechanism for a high energy compound nucleus reaction can only be described by a hybrid of sequential decay and multi-particle breakup. Highly alpha-clustered states were seen which did not originate from simple binary reaction processes. Direct investigations of near-threshold states in N-alpha systems are inherently impeded by the Coulomb barrier prohibiting the observation of states in the N-alpha decay channel. No evidence of a highly clustered 15.1 MeV state in 16O was observed from (28Si*,12C(0_2+))16O(0_6+) when reconstructing the Hoyle state from 3 alpha-particles. Therefore, no experimental signatures for alpha-condensation were observed.

Influence of Backside Energy Leakages from Hadronic Calorimeters on Fluctuation Measures in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

    Andrey Seryakov🇷🇺

The phase diagram of the strongly interacting matter is the main research subject for different current and future experiments in high-energy physics. System size and energy scan programs aim to find a possible critical point. One of such programs was accomplished by the fixed-target NA61/SHINE experiment in 2018. It includes six beam energies and six colliding systems: p + p, Be + Be, Ar + Sc, Xe + La, Pb + Pb and p + Pb. In this study, we discuss how the efficiency of centrality selection by forward spectators influences multiplicity and fluctuation measures and how this influence depends on the size of colliding systems. We use SHIELD and EPOS Monte-Carlo (MC) generators along with the wounded nucleon model, introduce a probability to lose a forward spectator and spectator energy loss. We show that for light colliding systems such as Be or Li even a small inefficiency in centrality selection has a dramatic impact on multiplicity scaled variance. Conversely, heavy systems such as Ar + Sc are much less prone to the effect.

Probing Transverse-Momentum Distributions With Groomed Jets

    Daniel Gutierrez-Reyes🇪🇸 · Yiannis Makris🇺🇸 · Varun Vaidya🇺🇸 · Ignazio Scimemi🇪🇸 · Lorenzo Zoppi🇳🇱

We present the transverse momentum spectrum of groomed jets in di-jet events for collisions and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The jets are groomed using a soft-drop grooming algorithm which helps in mitigating effects of non-global logarithms and underlying event. At the same time, by reducing the final state hadronization effects, it provides a clean access to the non-perturbative part of the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. In SIDIS experiments we look at the transverse momentum of the groomed jet measured w.r.t. the incoming hadron in the Breit frame. Because the final state hadronization effects are significantly reduced, the SIDIS case allows to probe the TMD parton distribution functions. We discuss the sources of non-perturbative effects in the low transverse momentum region including novel (but small) effects that arise due to grooming. We derive a factorization theorem within SCET and resum any large logarithm in the measured transverse momentum up to NNLL accuracy using the -prescription as implemented in the artemide package and provide a comparison with simulations.
