New data on both total and differential cross sections of the production of mesons in proton-deuteron fusion to in the excess energy region are presented. These data have been obtained with the WASA-at-COSY detector setup located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, using a proton beam at 15 different beam momenta between and . While significant structure of the total cross section is observed in the energy region , a previously reported sharp variation around cannot be confirmed. Angular distributions show the typical forward-peaking that was reported elsewhere. For the first time, it is possible to study the development of these angular distributions with rising excess energy over a large interval.

Pseudorapidity dependence of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations in pp collisions at SPS energies

Daria Prokhorova (for the NA61/SHINE Collaboration)🇷🇺

A search for the critical behavior of strongly interacting matter was performed at the NA61/SHINE experiment by studying event-by-event fluctuations of multiplicity and transverse momentum of charged hadrons produced in inelastic p+p collisions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the energy dependence of the scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution and for two families of strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations and are presented. These quantities were studied in different pseudorapidity intervals, which correspond to changing the baryon chemical potential and the temperature at the freeze-out stage. The strongly intensive measures and were also used in the analysis of short- and long-range multiplicity correlations. Results on multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations significantly depend on the charges of the selected hadrons and the width and/or location of pseudorapidity intervals. The event generator EPOS does not describe the data for the measure, but provides a fair description of . The measure of forward-backward fluctuations is reproduced reasonably well by the EPOS model.

Investigation of complete and incomplete fusion in Li+Sn reaction around Coulomb barrier energies

    V. V. Parkar🇮🇳 · Sushil K. Sharma🇮🇳 · R. Palit🇮🇳 · S. Upadhyaya🇵🇱 · A. Shrivastava🇮🇳 · S. K. Pandit🇮🇳 · K. Mahata🇮🇳 · V. Jha · S. Santra🇮🇳 · K. Ramachandran🇮🇳 · T. N. Nag · P. K. Rath🇮🇳 · Bhushan Kanagalekar · T. Trivedi

The complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for Li+Sn reaction were measured using online and offline characteristic -ray detection techniques. The complete fusion (CF) cross sections at energies above the Coulomb barrier were found to be suppressed by 26 \% compared to the coupled channel calculations. This suppression observed in complete fusion cross sections is found to be commensurate with the measured total incomplete fusion (ICF) cross sections. There is a distinct feature observed in the ICF cross sections, i.e., -capture is found to be dominant than -capture at all the measured energies. A simultaneous explanation of complete, incomplete and total fusion (TF) data was also obtained from the calculations based on Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel method with short range imaginary potentials. The cross section ratios of CF/TF and ICF/TF obtained from the data as well as the calculations showed the dominance of ICF at below barrier energies and CF at above barrier energies.

Neutral pion and meson production in p-Pb collisions at TeV

    ALICE Collaboration

Neutral pion and meson invariant differential yields were measured in non-single diffractive p-Pb collisions at TeV with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The analysis combines results from three complementary photon measurements, utilizing the PHOS and EMCal calorimeters and the Photon Conversion Method. The invariant differential yields of and meson inclusive production are measured near mid-rapidity in a broad transverse momentum range of GeV/ and GeV/, respectively. The measured / ratio increases with and saturates for GeV/ at . A deviation from scaling is observed for GeV/. The measured / ratio is consistent with previous measurements from proton-nucleus and pp collisions over the full range. The measured / ratio at high also agrees within uncertainties with measurements from nucleus-nucleus collisions. The and yields in p-Pb relative to the scaled pp interpolated reference, , are presented for GeV/ and GeV/, respectively. The results are compared with theoretical model calculations. The values of are consistent with unity for transverse momenta above 2 GeV/. These results support the interpretation that the suppressed yield of neutral mesons measured in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies is due to parton energy loss in the hot QCD medium.

Charm production in interactions of antiproton with proton and nuclei at energies

    R. Shyam🇮🇳 · K. Tsushima🇧🇷

We study the production of charmed baryons in the antiproton-proton and antiproton-nucleus interactions within a fully covariant model that is based on an effective Lagrangian approach. The baryon production proceeds via the -channel and meson-exchange diagrams. We have also explored the production of the charm-baryon hypernucleus O in the antiproton - O collisions. For antiproton beam momenta of interest to the experiment, the 0 differential cross sections for the formation of O hypernuclear states with simple particle-hole configurations, have magnitudes in the range of a few b/sr.

Combined Constraints on the Equation of State of Dense Neutron-Rich Matter from Terrestrial Experiments and Observations of Neutron Stars

    Nai-Bo Zhang🇨🇳 · Bao-An Li🇺🇸 · Jun Xu🇨🇳

Within the parameter space of equation of state (EOS) of dense neutron-rich matter limited by existing constraints mainly from terrestrial nuclear experiments, we investigate how the neutron star maximum mass M, radius km and tidal deformability of canonical neutron stars all together constrain the EOS of dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter. While the 3-D parameter space of (curvature of nuclear symmetry energy), and (skewness of the symmetry energy and EOS of symmetric nuclear matter, respectively) are narrowed down significantly by the observational constraints, more data are needed to pin down the individual values of , and with quantified uncertainties. The largely controls the maximum mass of neutron stars. While the EOS with is sufficiently stiff to support neutron stars as massive as 2.37 M, to support the hyperthetical ones as massive as 2.74 M (composite mass of GW170817) requires to be larger than its currently known maximum value of about 400 MeV and beyond the causality limit. The upper limit on the tidal deformability of from the recent observation of GW170817 is found to provide upper limits on some EOS parameters consistent with but far less restrictive than the existing constraints of other observables studied.

Measurement of low-energy background events due to Rn contamination on the surface of a NaI(Tl) crystal

    K.W. Kim🇰🇷 · C. Ha🇰🇷 · N.Y. Kim🇰🇷 · Y.D. Kim🇰🇷 · H.S. Lee🇰🇷 · B.J. Park🇰🇷 · H.K. Park🇰🇷

It has been known that decays of daughter elements of Rn on the surface of a detector cause significant background at energies below 10 keV. In particular Pb and Po decays on the crystal surface result in significant background for dark matter search experiments with NaI(Tl) crystals. In this report, measurement of Pb and Po decays on surfaces are obtained by using a Rn contaminated crystal. Alpha decay events of Po on the surface are measured by coincidence requirements of two attached crystals. Due to recoiling of Pb, rapid nuclear recoil events are observed. A mean time characterization demonstrates that Pb recoil events can be statistically separated from those of sodium or iodine nuclear recoil events, as well as electron recoil events.
