Sensitivity of seismically cued antineutrino detectors to nuclear explosions

    Rachel Carr🇺🇸 · Ferenc Dalnoki-Veress🇺🇸 · Adam Bernstein🇺🇸

We evaluate the sensitivity of large, gadolinium-doped water detectors to antineutrinos released by nuclear fission explosions, using updated signal and background models and taking advantage of the capacity for seismic observations to provide an analysis trigger. Under certain realistic conditions, the antineutrino signature of a 250-kiloton pure fission explosion could be identified several hundred kilometers away in a detector about the size of the largest module currently proposed for a basic physics experiment. In principle, such an observation could provide rapid confirmation that the seismic signal coincided with a fission event, possibly useful for international monitoring of nuclear weapon tests. We discuss the limited potential for seismically cued antineutrino observations to constrain fission yield, differentiate pure fission from fusion-enhanced weapon tests, indicate that the seismic evidence of an explosion had been intentionally masked, or verify the absence of explosive testing in a targeted area. We conclude that advances in seismic monitoring and neutrino physics have made the detection of explosion-derived antineutrinos more conceivable than previously asserted, but the size and cost of sufficiently sensitive detectors continue to limit applications.

Nucleon and nuclear structure through dilepton production

    I.V. Anikin · N. Batzell · M. Boer · R. Boussarie · V.M. Braun · S.J. Brodsky · A. Camsonne · W.C. Chang · L. Colaneri · S. Dobbs · A.V. Efremov · K. Gnanvo and 20 other authors

Transverse momentum distributions and generalized parton distributions provide a comprehensive framework for the three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon and the nucleus experimentally using deeply virtual semi-exclusive and exclusive processes. The advent of combined high luminosity facilities and large acceptance detector capabilities enables experimental investigation of the partonic structure of hadrons with time-like virtual probes, in complement to the rich on-going space-like virtual probe program. The merits and benefits of the dilepton production channel for nuclear structure studies are discussed within the context of the International Workshop on Nucleon and Nuclear Structure through Dilepton Production taking place at the European Center for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT) of Trento. Particularly, the double deeply virtual Compton scattering, the time-like Compton scattering, the deeply virtual meson production, and the Drell-Yan processes are reviewed and a strategy for high impact experimental measurements is proposed.

Comment on "Test of the Brink-Axel Hypothesis for the Pygmy Dipole Resonance" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 182503 (2017)]

    Gencho Rusev🇺🇸 · Ronald Schwengner🇩🇪 · Arnd R. Junghans🇩🇪

The authors of the letter "Test of the Brink-Axel Hypothesis for the Pygmy Dipole Resonance" [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 182503 (2017)] claim a violation of the Brink-Axel hypothesis by (gamma, gamma') data from gELBE for 96Mo [Phys. Rev. C 79, 061302 (2009)]. This violation cannot be concluded from the (gamma, gamma') data and is not at all discussed in that work. The comparison of the (g,g') data with the new (p,p') data in the letter does not give any hint to such a violation.

Jet-medium interaction and the Gubser flow

    Li Yan🇨🇦 · Sangyong Jeon🇨🇦 · Charles Gale🇨🇦

We study the effects of expansion and viscous corrections on the hydrodynamical medium response to a high energy jet parton. More specifically, using a semi-analytical Gubser solution to relativistic fluid dynamics, modifications to the formed Mach cone, diffusive wake, and the momentum flow of the medium response along and perpendicular to the jet particle, are analyzed mode-by-mode. This should provide intuition and guidance for analyses of the experimentally measured jet sub-structure in heavy-ion collisions.

First measurement of production in pp collisions at = 7 TeV

    ALICE Collaboration

The production of the charm-strange baryon is measured for the first time at the LHC via its semileptonic decay into e in pp collisions at TeV with the ALICE detector. The transverse momentum () differential cross section multiplied by the branching ratio is presented in the interval 1 8 GeV/ at mid-rapidity, 0.5. The transverse momentum dependence of the baryon production relative to the D meson production is compared to predictions of event generators with various tunes of the hadronisation mechanism, which are found to underestimate the measured cross-section ratio.

Light-meson masses in an unquenched quark model

    Xiaoyun Chen🇨🇳 · Jialun Ping🇨🇳 · Craig D. Roberts🇺🇸 · Jorge Segovia🇪🇸

We perform a coupled-channels calculation of the masses of light mesons with the quantum numbers , , by including and components in a nonrelativistic chiral quark model. The coupling between two- and four-quark configurations is realized through a quark-pair creation model. With the usual form of this operator, the mass shifts are large and negative, an outcome which raises serious issues of validity for the quenched quark model. Herein, therefore, we introduce some improvements of the operator in order to reduce the size of the mass shifts. By introducing two simple factors, physically well motivated, the coupling between and components is weakened, producing mass shifts that are around 10-20% of hadron bare masses.
