    Feasibility study for the measurement of TDAs at PANDA in

    The exclusive charmonium production process in annihilation with an associated meson is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the and reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.

    K-K-pp - an important gateway toward multi-kaonic nuclei

    Based on our Faddeev-Yakubowsky calculations of four-body kaonic nuclear systems it was revealed that the structure of K-K-pp is well approximated by two Lambda*=K-p's with strong mutual attraction. It is vitally important to study this nucleus, as it is an essential gateway toward multi-Lambda* nuclei. Two experimental proposals are presented: i) production of K-K-pp by p+p reactions at T_p = 7 GeV, and ii) search for K-K-pp from the invariant mass of M(Lambda-Lambda) around 2.6 GeV/c2 in high-energy HI reactions.

    Measurement of the Dalitz plot distribution

    Using the production reactions and , the Dalitz plot distribution for the decay is studied with the WASA detector at COSY, based on a combined data sample of events. The Dalitz plot density is parametrised by a product of the -wave phase space and a polynomial expansion in the normalised polar Dalitz plot variables and . For the first time, a deviation from pure -wave phase space is observed with a significance of . The deviation is parametrised by a linear term , with determined to be , consistent with the expectations of -meson-type final-state interactions of the -wave pion pairs.

    First measurement of unpolarized SIDIS cross section and cross section ratios from a He target

    The unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) differential cross sections in He() have been measured for the first time in Jefferson Lab experiment E06-010 performed with a GeV beam on a He target. The experiment focuses on the valence quark region, covering a kinematic range , , , and . The extracted SIDIS differential cross sections of production are compared with existing phenomenological models while the He nucleus approximated as two protons and one neutron in a plane wave picture, in multi-dimensional bins. Within the experimental uncertainties, the azimuthal modulations of the cross sections are found to be consistent with zero.

    Small gluon shadowing from LHC data on coherent photoproduction

    The cross section for coherent photoproduction in Pb-Pb collisions is the sum of two contributions, one from low-, the other from high-energy photon-nucleus interactions. A novel method to disentangle both contributions allowing one to extract the coherent photo-nuclear cross section for coherent production, , is presented. The utility of the method is demonstrated using measurements from peripheral and ultra-peripheral Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. Applying the proposed method to the available data it is possible to obtain up to a photon-lead centre-of-mass energy of 470 GeV, which corresponds to of 4.4x10. To illustrate a possible use of the extracted photo-nuclear cross sections, the corresponding nuclear suppression factors are computed and they are compared to predictions of gluon shadowing calculated in the leading-twist approximation approach.

    Cherenkov and Scintillation Light Separation in Organic Liquid Scintillators

    The CHErenkov / Scintillation Separation experiment (CHESS) has been used to demonstrate the separation of Cherenkov and scintillation light in both linear alkylbenzene (LAB) and LAB with 2g/L of PPO as a fluor (LAB/PPO). This is the first such demonstration for the more challenging LAB/PPO cocktail and improves on previous results for LAB. A time resolution of 338 +/- 12 ps FWHM results in an efficiency for identifying Cherenkov photons in LAB/PPO of 70 +/- 3% and 63 +/- 8% for time- and charge-based separation, respectively, with scintillation contamination of 36 +/- 5% and 38 +/- 4%. LAB/PPO data is consistent with a rise time of 0.75 +/- 0.25 ns.

    Effective field theory approach to open heavy flavor production in heavy-ion collisions

    We develop a version of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) which includes finite quark masses, as well as Glauber gluons that describe the interaction of collinear partons with QCD matter. In the framework of this new effective field theory, labeled SCET, we derive the massive splitting functions in the vacuum and the QCD medium for the processes , and . The numerical effects due to finite quark masses are sizable and our results are consistent with the traditional approach to parton energy loss in the soft gluon emission limit. In addition, we present a new framework for including the medium-induced full splitting functions consistent with next-to-leading order calculations in QCD for inclusive hadron production. Finally, we show numerical results for the suppression of - and -mesons in heavy ion collisions at TeV and 2.76 TeV and compare to available data from the LHC.

    Double Resonance in Dalitz Plot of M(pLambda)-M(KLambda) in DISTO Data on p+p rightarrow p+Lambda+K+ at 2.85 GeV

    The X(2265) resonance was previously observed in DISTO data of p+p rightarrow p+Lambda+K+ at 2.85 GeV on an attempt of searching for the kaonic nuclear state K-pp rightarrow p + Lambda. In the present paper we report an additional finding, namely, a double resonance type phenomena, not only with a peak at M(pLambda) = 2265 MeV/c2 but also a broad bump at M(K+ Lambda) ~ 1700 MeV/c2. This "double-resonance" zone is expressed as XY(2265, 1700). The latter bump may result from nearby nucleon resonances, typically N*(1710), as well as by attractive K - Lambda final-state interaction. We point out that this double resonance XY(2265, 1700) as seen in DISTO at 2.85 GeV cannot be populated kinematically in a HADES experiment at 3.5 GeV.

    Prompt photon production and photon-hadron jet correlations with POWHEG

    We present a calculation of direct photon production at next-to-leading order of QCD and a matching of this calculation with parton showers using POWHEG BOX. Based on simulations with POWHEG+PYTHIA, we perform a detailed phenomenological analysis of PHENIX data on prompt photon production and photon-hadron jet correlations in pp collisions at RHIC, considerably improving the description of these data with respect to previous calculations, and we suggest additional interesting analyses.

    Binding Blocks: building the Universe one nucleus at the time

    We present a new teaching and outreach activity based around the construction of a three-dimensional chart of isotopes using LEGO bricks. The activity, \emph{Binding Blocks}, demonstrates nuclear and astrophysical processes through a seven-meter chart of all nuclear isotopes, built from over 26,000 LEGO bricks. It integrates A-level and GCSE curricula across areas of nuclear physics, astrophysics, and chemistry, including: nuclear decays (through the colours in the chart); nuclear binding energy (through tower heights); production of chemical elements in the cosmos; fusion processes in stars and fusion energy on Earth; as well as links to medical physics, particularly diagnostics and radiotherapy.
