We investigate the possibilities of producing neutron-rich nuclides in projectile fission of heavy beams in the energy range of 20 MeV/nucleon expected from low-energy facilities. We report our efforts to theoretically describe the reaction mechanism of projectile fission following a multinucleon transfer collision at this energy range. Our calculations are mainly based on a two-step approach: the dynamical stage of the collision is described with either the phenomenological Deep-Inelastic Transfer model (DIT), or with the microscopic Constrained Molecular Dynamics model (CoMD). The deexcitation/fission of the hot heavy projectile fragments is performed with the Statistical Mul- tifragmentation Model (SMM). We compared our model calculations with our previous experimental projectile-fission data of 238U (20 MeV/nucleon)+208Pb and 197Au (20 MeV/nucleon)+197Au and found an overall reasonable agreement. Our study suggests that projectile fission following periph- eral heavy-ion collisions at this energy range offers an effective route to access very neutron-rich rare isotopes toward and beyond the astrophysical r-process path.

Challenges in flow background removal in search for the chiral magnetic effect

    Fuqiang Wang🇺🇸 · Jie Zhao🇺🇸

We investigate the effect of resonance decays on the three-particle correlator charge separation observable in search for the chiral magnetic effect, using a simple simulation with realistic inputs. We find that resonance decays can largely account for the measured signal. We suppress the elliptic flow () background by using zero event-by-event (or via the mixed-event technique). We find that the background is suppressed, but not eliminated as naively anticipated. We identify the reason to be the non-identicalness of the resonance and final-state particle's and the induced correlation between the transverse momentum dependent resonance and decay angle. We make predictions for the charge separation signal due to resonance decays in 200~GeV Au+Au collisions.

Multiplicities of charged kaons from deep-inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target

    C. Adolph🇩🇪 · J. Agarwala🇮🇹 · M. Aghasyan🇮🇹 · R. Akhunzyanov🇷🇺 · M.G. Alexeev🇮🇹 · G.D. Alexeev🇷🇺 · A. Amoroso🇮🇹 · V. Andrieux🇫🇷 · N.V. Anfimov🇷🇺 · V. Anosov🇷🇺 · K. Augsten🇨🇿 · W. Augustyniak🇵🇱 and 215 other authors

Precise measurements of charged-kaon multiplicities in deep inelastic scattering were performed. The results are presented in three-dimensional bins of the Bjorken scaling variable x, the relative virtual-photon energy y, and the fraction z of the virtual-photon energy carried by the produced hadron. The data were obtained by the COMPASS Collaboration by scattering 160 GeV muons off an isoscalar 6 LiD target. They cover the kinematic domain 1 (GeV/c)2 < Q2 < 60 (GeV/c)^2 in the photon virtuality, 0.004 < x < 0.4, 0.1 < y < 0.7, 0.20 < z < 0.85, and W > 5 GeV/c^2 in the invariant mass of the hadronic system. The results from the sum of the z-integrated K+ and K- multiplicities at high x point to a value of the non-strange quark fragmentation function larger than obtained by the earlier DSS fit.
