    Short Range Correlations and the EMC Effect in Effective Field Theory

    We show that the empirical linear relation between the magnitude of the EMC effect in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei and the short range correlation scaling factor extracted from high-energy quasi-elastic scattering at is a natural consequence of scale separation and derive the relationship using effective field theory. While the scaling factor is a ratio of nuclear matrix elements that individually depend on the calculational scheme, we show that the ratio is independent of this choice. We perform Green's function Monte Carlo calculations with both chiral and Argonne-Urbana potentials to verify this and determine the scaling factors for light nuclei. The resulting values for He and He are in good agreement with experimental values. We also present results for Be and C extracted from variational Monte Carlo calculations.

    Deuteron charge radius and Rydberg constant from spectroscopy data in atomic deuterium

    We give a pedagogical description of the method to extract the charge radii and Rydberg constant from laser spectroscopy in regular hydrogen (H) and deuterium (D) atoms, that is part of the CODATA least-squares adjustment (LSA) of the fundamental physical constants. We give a deuteron charge radius Rd from D spectroscopy alone of 2.1415(45) fm. This value is independent of the measurements that lead to the proton charge radius, and five times more accurate than the value found in the CODATA Adjustment 10. The improvement is due to the use of a value for the 1S->2S transition in atomic deuterium which can be inferred from published data or found in a PhD thesis.

    A nucleus-dependent valence-space approach to nuclear structure

    We present a nucleus-dependent valence-space approach for calculating ground and excited states of nuclei, which generalizes the shell-model in-medium similarity renormalization group to an ensemble reference with fractionally filled orbitals. Because the ensemble is used only as a reference, and not to represent physical states, no symmetry restoration is required. This allows us to capture 3N forces among valence nucleons with a valence-space Hamiltonian specifically targeted to each nucleus of interest. Predicted ground-state energies from carbon through nickel agree with results of other large-space ab initio methods, generally to the 1\% level. In addition, we show that this new approach is required in order to obtain convergence for nuclei in the upper and shells. Finally, we address the / ground-state inversion problem in and . This approach extends the reach of ab initio nuclear structure calculations to essentially all light- and medium-mass nuclei.

    Jet Measurements in Heavy-ion Collisions with CMS

    The production of a strongly interacting medium in heavy-ion collisions is identified through suppression of high transverse momentum jets leading to an effect known as jet quenching. Detailed measurements of nuclear modification factors and energy flow of the aforementioned quenched jets are performed with the CMS detector. These new results extend previous measurements to large angles with respect to the quenched jets and increase reach in the transverse momentum range. High statistics pp, pPb and PbPb data taken in 2011-13 are used in the following analysis. A new data-driven method to estimate the underlying event contribution from the forward calorimeter energy distribution is employed which takes into account possible event by event flow modulation. The flavor dependence of energy loss of jets is studied by tagging heavy flavor b-jets in these systems.
