    New activation cross section data on longer lived radio-nuclei produced in proton induced nuclear reaction on zirconium

    In the frame of a systematic study of charged particle production routes of medically relevant radionuclei, the excitation function for indirect production of Ta through Hf(,xn)Ta nuclear reaction was measured for the first time up to 40 MeV. In parallel, the side reactions Hf(,x)W, Ta, Hf were also assessed. Stacked foil irradiation technique and -ray spectrometry were used. New experimental cross section data for the Ta(d,xn)W reaction are also reported up to 40 MeV. The measured excitation functions are compared with the results of the ALICE-IPPE, and EMPIRE nuclear reaction model codes and with the TALYS 1.4 based data in the TENDL-2013 library. The thick target yields were deduced and compared with yields of other charged particle ((p,4n), (d,5n) and (He,x)) production routes for W.

    Spectroscopy of 232U in the (p,t) reaction: More information on 0+ states

    The excitation spectra in the deformed nucleus 232U have been studied by means of the (p,t) reaction, using the Q3D spectrograph facility at the Munich Tandem accelerator. The angular distributions of tritons were measured for 162 excitations seen in the triton spectra up to 3.25 MeV. 0+ assignments are made for 13 excited states by comparison of experimental angular distributions with the calculated ones using the CHUCK3 code. Assignments up to spin 6+ are made for other states. Sequences of states are selected which can be treated as rotational bands. Moments of inertia have been derived from these sequences, whose values may be considered as evidence of the two- or one-phonon nature of these 0+ excitations. Experimental data are compared with interacting boson model (IBM) and quasiparticle-phonon model (QPM) calculations.

    Estimation of double differential angle-dependent neutron production cross sections from tritons on 197Au at energies from 5.97 to 19.14 MeV

    Estimated cross sections for neutron production from triton bombardment of gold are deduced from measurements of triton interactions with gas targets that used gold as a triton beam stop material. Differential cross sections for production of neutrons from 5.97-, 7.47-, 10.45-, 16.41- and 19.14-MeV tritons on 197Au were evaluated. Corrections for the neutron interaction in gold, in the target structure and in the air of the flight path were obtained by means of a Monte Carlo technique. Uncorrelated scale uncertainties range from 24 to 41% whereas those of double differential cross sections range from 0.2 to 5%. Based on these cross section data, calculation of neutron yield at 0o from fully stopped tritons at 20.22 MeV agree with an independent measurement. Least-squares fits with a gamma distribution model indicate an anisotropy in the high energy portion of the neutron spectra. Legendre polynomial fits of differential cross sections are reported. All neutron cross section data are made available through the Experimental Nuclear Reaction Data (EXFOR) library at international data centers.

    LUMINEU: a search for neutrinoless double beta decay based on ZnMoO scintillating bolometers

    The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO crystals enriched in Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kgyears, setting the bases for a next generation decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern.

    Observable Properties of Quark-Hadron Phase Transition at the Large Hadron Collider

    Quark-hadron phase transition is simulated by an event generator that incorporates the dynamical properties of contraction due to QCD confinement forces and randomization due to the thermal behavior of a large quark system on the edge of hadronization. Fluctuations of emitted pions in the space are analyzed using normalized factorial moments in a wide range of bin sizes. The scaling index is found to be very close to the predicted value in the Ginzburg-Landau formalism. The erraticity indices are determined in a number of ways that lead to the same consistent values. They are compared to the values from the Ising model, showing significant difference in a transparent plot. Experimental determination of and at the LHC are now needed to check the reality of the theoretical study and to provide guidance for improving the model description of quark-hadron phase transition.
