    Event shape engineering for inclusive spectra and elliptic flow in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_\rm{NN}}=2.76 TeV

    We report on results obtained with the Event Shape Engineering technique applied to Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_\rm{NN}}=2.76 TeV. By selecting events in the same centrality interval, but with very different average flow, different initial state conditions can be studied. We find the effect of the event-shape selection on the elliptic flow coefficient to be almost independent of transverse momentum p_\rm{T}, as expected if this effect is due to fluctuations in the initial geometry of the system. Charged hadron, pion, kaon, and proton transverse momentum distributions are found to be harder in events with higher-than-average elliptic flow, indicating an interplay between radial and elliptic flow.

    Initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss effects on inclusive jet production in p+A collisions at RHIC and LHC

    Recent measurements of the centrality and rapidity dependence of single inclusive jet production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC have revealed large and non-trivial nuclear modification of the production cross section for this process. In this paper, we explore to what extent such nuclear modification can be understood by the framework of standard cold nuclear matter effects, in particular initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss. We demonstrate quantitatively that theoretical calculations which include medium-induced radiative corrections can describe rather reasonably the attenuation of the jet production yields in the large transverse momentum region in d+Au collisions at RHIC and p+Pb collisions at the LHC for central to semi-central collisions. We further show that the observed scaling behavior of the nuclear modification factor as a function of the total jet energy for various rapidity intervals has a natural explanation in the picture of cold nuclear matter energy loss. On the other hand, the observed enhancement in peripheral collisions is not described in this picture and could have a different origin.

    Angular distribution in s-channel formation of the pentaquark baryon

    Using the DIANA data on the charge-exchange reaction on a bound neutron, in which the s-channel formation of the pentaquark baryon has been observed, we analyze the dependence of the background-subtracted signal on the emission angle in the rest frame. In order to describe the observed distribution, invoking the interference between the nonresonant s-wave and the -mediated higher-wave contributions to the amplitude of the charge-exchange reaction is required at a 2.8 level. The spin--parity assignment of 1/2 for the baryon is ruled out at a statistical level of 2.9 standard deviations. A physically-meaningful selection in based on the observed angular dependence of the signal allows to boost the statistical significance of the signal up to 7.1 standard deviations. This is far in excess of previously reported signals and renders the existence more credible.

    Self-consistent Theory of Finite Fermi Systems vs Skyrme-Hartree-Fock method. Spherical nuclei

    Recent results of the Fayans energy density functional (EDF) for spherical nuclei are reviewed. A comparison is made with predictions of several Skyrme EDFs. The charge radii and characteristics of the first 2^+ excitations in semi-magic nuclei are briefly discussed. The single-particle spectra of doubly magic nuclei are considered in more detail. The phonon-particle coupling effects are analyzed including the so-called tadpole term.

    boson production in Pb collisions at TeV measured with the ATLAS detector

    The ATLAS Collaboration has measured the inclusive production of bosons via their decays into electron and muon pairs in Pb collisions at TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are made using data corresponding to integrated luminosities of 29.4 nb and 28.1 nb for and , respectively. The results from the two channels are consistent and combined to obtain a cross section times the branching ratio, integrated over the rapidity region , of 139.8 4.8 (stat.) 6.2 (syst.) 3.8 (lumi.) nb. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of the boson rapidity and transverse momentum, and compared with models based on parton distributions both with and without nuclear corrections. The centrality dependence of boson production in Pb collisions is measured and analyzed within the framework of a standard Glauber model and the model's extension for fluctuations of the underlying nucleon-nucleon scattering cross section.

    Fayans functional for deformed nuclei. Uranium region

    Fayans energy density functional (EDF) FaNDF^0 has been applied to the nuclei around uranium region. Ground state characteristics of the Th, U and Pu isotopic chains, up to the two-neutron drip line, are found and compared with predictions from several Skyrme EDFs. The two-neutron drip line is found for FaNDF^0, SLy4 and SkM^* EDFs for a set of elements with even proton number, from Pb up to Fm.
