    Nuclear clocks based on resonant excitation of gamma-transitions

    We review the ideas and concepts for a clock that is based on a radiative transition in the nucleus rather than in the electron shell. This type of clock offers advantages like an insensitivity against field-induced systematic frequency shifts and the opportunity to obtain high stability from interrogating many nuclei in the solid state. Experimental work concentrates on the low-energy (about 8 eV) isomeric transition in Th-229. We review the status of the experiments that aim at a direct optical observation of this transition and outline the plans for high-resolution laser spectroscopy experiments.

    Examination of the Nature of the ABC Effect

    Recently it has been shown by exclusive and kinematically complete experiments that the appearance of a narrow resonance structure in double-pionic fusion reactions is strictly correlated with the appearance of the so-called ABC effect, which denotes a pronounced low-mass enhancement in the -invariant mass spectrum. Whereas the resonance structure got its explanation by the dibaryonic resonance, a satisfactory explanation for the ABC effect is still pending. In this paper we discuss possible explanations of the ABC effect and their consequences for the internal structure of the dibaryon.

    Long-range pseudorapidity dihadron correlations in +Au collisions at GeV

    Dihadron angular correlations in +Au collisions at GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity () on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth ). This correlated yield as a function of appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side () yield. The Fourier coefficients of the correlation, , have a strong dependence. In addition, it is found that is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward (-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

    A new measurement of the neutron detection efficiency for the NaI Crystal Ball detector

    We report on a measurement of the neutron detection efficiency in NaI crystals in the Crystal Ball detector obtained from a study of single p0 photoproduction on deuterium using the tagged photon beam at the Mainz Microtron. The results were obtained up to a neutron energy of 400 MeV. They are compared to previous measurements made more than 15 years ago at the pion beam at the BNL AGS.
