    New precision measurements of free neutron beta decay with cold neutrons

    Precision measurements in free neutron beta decay serve to determine the coupling constants of beta decay, and offer several stringent tests of the Standard Model. This paper describes the free neutron beta decay program planned for the Fundamental Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and puts it into the context of other recent and planned measurements of neutron beta decay observables.

    Simulation studies for Tin Bolometer Array for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

    It is important to identify and reduce the gamma radiation which can be a significant source of background for any double beta decay experiment. The TIN.TIN detector array, which is under development for the search of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in Sn, has the potential to utilize the hit multiplicity information to discriminate the gamma background from the events of interest. Monte Carlo simulations for optimizing the design of a Tin detector module has been performed by varying element sizes with an emphasis on the gamma background reduction capabilities of the detector array.

    Dijets in p+Pb collisions and their quantitative constraints for nuclear PDFs

    We present a perturbative QCD analysis concerning the production of high-pT dijets in p+Pb collisions at the LHC. The next-to-leading order corrections, scale variations and free-proton PDF uncertainties are found to have only a relatively small influence on the normalized dijet rapidity distributions. Interestingly, however, these novel observables prove to retain substantial sensitivity to the nuclear effects in the PDFs. Especially, they serve as a more robust probe of the nuclear gluon densities at , than e.g. the inclusive hadron production. We confront our calculations with the recent data by the CMS collaboration. These preliminary data lend striking support to the gluon antishadowing similar to that in the EPS09 nuclear PDFs.

    The LHC p+Pb run from the nuclear PDF perspective

    The p+Pb and Pb+Pb runs at the LHC have opened a possibility to investigate the validity of collinear factorization in a clearly higher center-of-mass energy scale than earlier in nuclear collisions. Indeed, some processes that have been measured routinely in p+p() collisions and utilized for years in free proton PDF fits, can now finally be reached also in the nuclear case. Such new data are expected to provide conclusive answers concerning the universality of the nuclear PDFs. In this talk, I will contrast some of the first p+Pb and Pb+Pb measurements to the predictions based on the nuclear PDFs.

    Measurement of the production and lepton charge asymmetry of bosons in Pb+Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    A measurement of boson production in lead-lead collisions at 2.76 TeV is presented. It is based on the analysis of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2011 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.14 and 0.15 in the muon and electron decay channels, respectively. The differential production yields and lepton charge asymmetry are each measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons and absolute pseudorapidity of the charged lepton. The results are compared to predictions based on next-to-leading-order QCD calculations. These measurements are, in principle, sensitive to possible nuclear modifications to the parton distribution functions and also provide information on scaling of boson production in multi-nucleon systems.

    Determination of freeze-out conditions from fluctuation observables measured at RHIC

    We extract chemical freeze-out conditions via a thermal model approach from fluctuation observables measured at RHIC and compare with results from lattice QCD and statistical hadronization model fits. The possible influence of additional critical and non-critical fluctuation sources not accounted for in our analysis is discussed.
