    Particle-yield modification in jet-like azimuthal di-hadron correlations in Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV

    The yield of charged particles associated with high- trigger particles ( GeV/) is measured with the ALICE detector in Pb-Pb collisions at = 2.76 TeV relative to proton-proton collisions at the same energy. The conditional per-trigger yields are extracted from the narrow jet-like correlation peaks in azimuthal di-hadron correlations. In the 5% most central collisions, we observe that the yield of associated charged particles with transverse momenta GeV/ on the away-side drops to about 60% of that observed in pp collisions, while on the near-side a moderate enhancement of 20-30% is found.

    Determining the Drift Time of Charge Carriers in P-Type Point-Contact HPGe Detectors

    An algorithm to measure the drift time of charge carriers in p-type point contact (PPC) high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors from the signals processed with a charge-sensitive preamplifier is introduced. It is demonstrated that the drift times can be used to estimate the distance of charge depositions from the point contact and to characterize losses due to charge trapping. A correction for charge trapping effects over a wide range of energies is implemented using the measured drift times and is shown to improve the energy resolution by up to 30%.

    Photoproduction of mesons off nuclei

    Recent results for the photoproduction of mesons off nuclei are reviewed. These experiments have been performed for two major lines of research related to the properties of the strong interaction. The investigation of nucleon resonances requires light nuclei as targets for the extraction of the isospin composition of the electromagnetic excitations. This is done with quasi-free meson photoproduction off the bound neutron and supplemented with the measurement of coherent photoproduction reactions, serving as spin and/or isospin filters. Furthermore, photoproduction from light and heavy nuclei is a very efficient tool for the study of the interactions of mesons with nuclear matter and the in-medium properties of hadrons. Experiments are currently rapidly developing due to the combination of high quality tagged (and polarized) photon beams with state-of-the-art 4pi detectors and polarized targets.

    ICP-SFMS search for long-lived naturally-occurring heavy, superheavy and superactinide nuclei compared to AMS experiments

    Negative results obtained in AMS searches by Dellinger et al. on mostly unrefined ores have led them to conclude that the very heavy long-lived species found in chemically processed samples with ICP-SFMS by Marinov et al. are artifacts. We argue that it may not be surprising that results obtained from small random samplings of inhomogeneous natural minerals would contrast with concentrations found in homogeneous materials extracted from large quantities of ore. We also point out that it is possible that the groups of counts at masses 296 and 294 seen by Dellinger et al. could be, within experimental uncertainties, due to Rg and eka-Bi in long-lived isomeric states. In such case, the experiments of Dellinger et al. lend support to the experiments of Marinov et al.

    Neutrino quasielastic interaction and nuclear dynamics

    We investigate the double differential neutrino-carbon quasielastic cross sections as measured by the MiniBooNE experiment. Our present treatment incorporates relativistic corrections in the nuclear response functions and includes the multinucleon component. We confirm our previous conclusion that it is possible to account for all the data without any modification of the axial mass. We also introduce the Q^2 distribution for charged and neutral current. The data point at a sizable multinucleon component beside the genuine quasielastic peak. They are also indicative of the collective character of the nuclear response, of interest for hadronic physics.

    Effects of equation of state on nuclear suppression and the initial entropy density of quark gluon plasma

    We study the effects of the equation of state on the nuclear suppression of heavy flavours in quark gluon plasma and estimate the initial entropy density of the system produced at the highest RHIC energy. For this purpose we have used the experimental data on the charged particle multiplicity and the nuclear suppression of single electron spectra originating from the semi-leptonic decays of open charm and beauty mesons. We have used inputs from lattice QCD to minimize the model dependence of the results. We obtain the value of the initial entropy density which varies from 20 to 59 /fm depending on the value of the velocity of sound that one uses for the analysis. Our investigation leads to a conservative value of the initial entropy density fm with corresponding initial temperature MeV well above the value of the transition temperature predicted by lattice QCD.
