    Luminosity determination for the pd reaction at 2.14 GeV with WASA-at-COSY

    The luminosity for a WASA-at-COSY experiment involving the pd reaction at 2.14 GeV proton-beam energy is determined by the forward pd elastic scattering, which yields an average beam-on-target value of [5.2\pm0.3(stat)\pm0.3(syst)]*10^{30} s^{-1}cm^{-2}. In addition, the forward pd elastic-scattering angular distribution is obtained with four-momentum transfer squared -t between 0.16 (GeV/c)^{2} and 0.78 (GeV/c)^{2} at this beam energy, which is compared with other experimental data and the pd double scattering model.

    Heavy Quark Momentum Diffusion Coefficient from Lattice QCD

    The momentum diffusion coefficient for heavy quarks is studied in a deconfined gluon plasma in the static approximation by investigating a correlation function of the color electric field using Monte Carlo techniques. The diffusion coefficient is extracted from the long distance behavior of such a correlator. For temperatures Tc < T <~ 2 Tc, our nonperturbative estimate of the diffusion coefficient is found to be very different from the leading order perturbation theory, and is in the right ballpark to explain the heavy quark flow seen by PHENIX at RHIC.

    Is there evidence for sterile neutrinos in IceCube data?

    Data from the LSND and MiniBooNE experiments, and revised expectations of the antineutrino flux from nuclear reactors suggest the existence of eV-mass sterile neutrinos. 3+2 and 1+3+1 scenarios accommodate all relevant short-baseline neutrino data except for the low-energy MiniBooNE anomaly. We analyze the angular distribution of upward going atmospheric neutrino events in the IceCube-40 dataset for evidence of sterile neutrinos within these scenarios. Depending on how systematic uncertainties are handled, we find strong evidence for, or weak evidence against sterile neutrinos. We show that future IceCube data will definitively settle the issue.

    FRIB Theory Users Group Report: Joint ATLAS-HRIBF-NSCL-FRIB SuperUsers Meeting 18-20 August 2011

    The FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) Theory Users Group participated in the Joint ATLAS-HRIBF-NSCL-FRIB SuperUsers Meeting, hosted by Michigan State University August 18-20, 2011. Prior to the meeting a survey of the FRIB Theory Users Group was conducted to assess the health of the low-energy nuclear theory community and to identify perceived areas of need, in anticipation of the new demands on theory that will accompany FRIB. Meeting discussions focused on survey results and on possible responses. These discussions are summarized here.

    Cold Dense Baryonic Matter and Compact Stars

    Probing dense hadronic matter is thus far an uncharted field of physics. Here we give a brief summary of the highlights of what has been so far accomplished and what will be done in the years ahead by the World Class University III Project at Hanyang University in the endeavor to unravel and elucidate the multifacet of the cold dense baryonic matter existing in the interior of the densest visible stable object in the Universe, i.e., neutron stars, strangeness stars and/or quark stars, from a modest and simplified starting point of an effective field theory modeled on the premise of QCD as well as from a gravity dual approach of hQCD. The core of the matter of our research is the possible origin of the of the proton mass that is to be accounted for and how the "vacuum" can be tweaked so that the source of the mass generation can be uncovered by measurements made in terrestrial as well as space laboratories. Some of the issues treated in the program concern what can be done - both theoretically and experimentally - in anticipation of what's to come for basic physics research in Korea.

    Counting hot/cold spots in quark-gluon plasma

    We study how local fluctuations in the initial states of relativistic heavy-ion collisions manifest themselves in the correlations between different orders of harmonic moments of the density profiles, particularly those involving only odd harmonics which purely arise from initial state fluctuations. We find the strengths of those correlations are sensitive to the number of hot and cold spots in the initial states. Hydrodynamic evolution of the fireball translates initial state geometric anisotropies as well as their correlations into final state momentum anisotropies and correlations. We conclude that the measurement of the correlations between different harmonic moments of final state azimuthal distribution can be employed to quantify the inhomogeneity of the initial density profiles such as the population of hot and cold spots that are produced in high energy nuclear collisions.
