    Coherent Dissociation O~~4 in Photoemulsion at an Incident Momentum of 4.5 GeV/ per Nucleon

    First searches for the coherent dissociation of relativistic oxygen nuclei into four a particles are reported. It is shown that reactions of this type are characterized by a significantly lower decay temperature than the conventional multifragmentation of residual projectile nuclei. The momentum spectra and correlations of a panicles are not reproduced by the simple statistical model of direct fragmentation. The possibility that the oxygen nucleus undergoing fragmentation acquires a nonzero angular momentum in the collision process is discussed.

    Sequential and simultaneous emission of fragments from p+Al collisions

    The energy and angular dependencies of double differential cross sections d^2sigma/dOmegadE were measured for p,d,t,^{3,4,6}He,^{6,7,8}Li,{7,9,10}Be, and ^{10,11,12}B produced in collisions of 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV protons with an Al target. The spectra and angular distributions of Li, Be, and B isotopes indicate a presence of two contributions: an isotropic, low energy one which is attributed to the evaporation of particles from excited remnants of the intranuclear cascade, and an anisotropic part which is interpreted to be due to multifragmentation of the remnants. It was found that such a hypothesis leads to very good description of spectra and angular distributions of all intermediate mass fragments (^6He-^{12}B) using the critical value of the excitation energy per nucleon as a single parameter, varying slowly with the beam energy.

    Expanding the concept of in-hadron condensates

    The in-pseudoscalar-meson condensate can be represented through the pseudoscalar-meson's scalar form factor at zero momentum transfer. With the aid of a mass formula for scalar mesons, revealed herein, the analogue is shown to be true for in-scalar-meson condensates. The concept is readily extended to all hadrons so that, via the zero momentum transfer value of any hadron's scalar form factor, one can readily extract the value for a quark condensate in that hadron which is a measure of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking.

    The DarkSide Program at LNGS

    DarkSide is a direct detection dark matter program based on two phase time projection chambers with depleted argon targets. The DarkSide detectors are designed, using novel low background techniques and active shielding, to be capable of demonstrating in situ a very low level of residual background. This means that each detector in the DarkSide program should have the ability to make a convincing claim of dark matter detection based on the observation of a few nuclear recoil events. The collaboration is currently operating a 10 kg prototype detector, DarkSide-10, in Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, while the first physics detector in the program, DarkSide-50, is expected to be deployed at LNGS at the end of 2012.

    Improved constraints on chiral SU(3) dynamics from kaonic hydrogen

    A new improved study of K^- - proton interactions near threshold is performed using coupled-channels dynamics based on the next-to-leading order chiral SU(3) meson-baryon effective Lagrangian. Accurate constraints are now provided by new high-precision kaonic hydrogen measurements. Together with threshold branching ratios and scattering data, these constraints permit an updated analysis of the complex barK N and pi Sigma coupled-channels amplitudes and an improved determination of the K^- p scattering length, including uncertainty estimates.

    Rise of azimuthal anisotropies as a signature of the Quark-Gluon-Plasma in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

    The azimuthal anisotropies of the collective transverse flow of hadrons are investigated in a large range of heavy-ion collision energy within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) microscopic transport approach which incorporates explicit partonic degrees of freedom in terms of strongly interacting quasiparticles (quarks and gluons) in line with an equation-of-state from lattice QCD as well as dynamical hadronization and hadronic dynamics in the final reaction phase. The experimentally observed increase of the elliptic flow with bombarding energy is successfully described in terms of the PHSD approach in contrast to a variety of other kinetic models based on hadronic interactions. The analysis of higher-order harmonics and shows a similar tendency of growing deviations between partonic and purely hadronic models with increasing bombarding energy. This signals that the excitation functions of azimuthal anisotropies provide a sensitive probe for the underling degrees of freedom excited in heavy-ion collisions.

    Probing flavor-dependent EMC effect with W boson production

    A recent theoretical model predicts that the modification of quark distributions in the nuclear medium (EMC effect) depends on the flavor of the quarks. We investigate -boson production in proton-nucleus collision as a possible tool to test this theoretical prediction. Several experimental observables in production sensitive to the flavor-dependent EMC effect are identified. Calculations for these experimental observables at the RHIC and LHC energies are presented using the recent flavor-dependent EMC model.

    Quenching of hadron and photon spectra in heavy-ion collisions from RHIC to LHC

    The generic features of parton energy loss effects on the quenching of single hadron spectra in heavy-ion collisions are discussed, paying attention to the expected differences from RHIC to LHC. The need for precise baseline measurements in p-Pb collisions at the LHC is also emphasized. Finally I briefly mention the production of prompt photons in heavy-ion collisions as well as some open questions.

    Improved description of Ar(p,d) transfer reactions

    An improved description of single neutron stripping from Ar beams at 33 MeV/nucleon by a hydrogen target is presented and the dependence on the neutron-proton asymmetry of the spectroscopic factors is further investigated. A finite range adiabatic model is used in the analysis and compared to previous zero range and local energy approximations. Full three-body Faddeev calculations are performed to estimate the error in the reaction theory. In addition, errors from the optical potentials are also evaluated. From our new spectroscopic factors extracted from transfer, it is possible to corroborate the neutron-proton asymmetry dependence reported from knockout measurements.
