    Measurements of high-pT probes in heavy ion collisions at CMS

    The capabilities of the CMS detector at the LHC will be described for measuring high-pT hadrons, photons and jets in heavy ion collisions. Detailed simulations of various studies planned with the CMS apparatus, including charged particle tracking, jet reconstruction using calorimetry, dimuon and isolated photon detection and the measurement of in-medium fragmentation functions using high-pT photon-jet correlations will be discussed.

    Recent HBT results in Au+Au and p+p collisions from PHENIX

    We present Hanbury-Brown Twiss measurements from the PHENIX experiment at RHIC for final results for charged kaon pairs from sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions and preliminary results for charged pion pairs from sqrt{s} = 200 GeV p+p collisions. We find that for kaon pairs from Au+Au, each traditional 3D Gaussian radius shows approximately the same linear increase as a function of N^{1/3}_{part}. An imaging analysis reveals a significant non-Gaussian tail for r \gtrsim 10 fm. The presence of a tail for kaon pairs demonstrates that similar non-Gaussian tails observed in earlier pion measurements cannot be fully explained by decays of long-lived resonances. The preliminary analysis of pions from sqrt{s} = 200 GeV p+p minimum biased collisions show correlations which are well suited to traditional 3D HBT radii extraction via the Bowler-Sinyukov method, and we present R_out, R_side, and R_long as a function of mean transverse pair mass.

    J/psi production in p-A and A-A collisions at fixed target experiments

    Charmonia suppression is one of the main signatures for the formation of a deconfined medium. However, also nuclear effects, not related to the production of a hot medium, can affect the J/psi yield. The determination, from the study of p-A collisions, of the J/psi behaviour in nuclear matter is, therefore, extremely important to correctly quantify the amount of charmonia suppression induced by the deconfined medium. In this paper the new NA60 results collected at 158 GeV incident energy, i.e. under the same kinematical conditions as the In-In (NA60) and Pb-Pb (NA50) data, are presented and compared with p-A measurements from other fixed target experiments. Results on A-A collisions are also reviewed taking into account the new available information on the influence of cold nuclear matter on the J/psi production yield. Finally, results on the J/psi polarization are shown for p-A and A-A collisions.

    In-Medium Modifications of Low-Mass Vector Mesons in PHENIX at RHIC

    Measurements at RHIC have established the creation of a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) in most central heavy-ion collisions. An important tool to understand properties of the QGP is study of the spectral shapes of low-mass vector mesons (LVM's), , and , which can be modified in the medium by partial restoration of chiral symmetry. This modification may be accessed directly by measuring low-momentum LVM's via their decays into lepton pairs inside the hot matter. Since leptons are not subject to the strong interaction, they do not rescatter on their way out of the medium. The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured LVM production at mid-rapidity in + , +Au and Au+Au collisions at = 200 GeV\@. Mass peaks for the LVM's have been observed in the di-electron invariant mass spectra with a resolution of 10 MeV/ in all of the three collision systems. The extracted spectra, mass and width of and in + , +Au and Au+Au, in the leptonic and hadronic decay channels are reviewed. As the widths of the mesons may be affected in the medium, the branching ratios of various decay modes may also be modified from the values in vacuum. The relative branching ratio is compared between and , which may be sensitive to the mass modification due to the small Q-value of .

    Commissioning and Prospects for Early Physics with ALICE
