Minimal Flavor Violation with Axion-like Particles

    Kiwoon Choi🇰🇷 · Sang Hui Im🇩🇪 · Chan Beom Park🇰🇷 · Seokhoon Yun🇰🇷

We revisit the flavor-changing processes involving an axion-like particle (ALP) in the context of generic ALP effective lagrangian with a discussion of possible UV completions providing the origin of the relevant bare ALP couplings. We focus on the minimal scenario that ALP has flavor-conserving couplings at tree level, and the leading flavor-changing couplings arise from the loops involving the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model fermions. We note that such radiatively generated flavor-changing ALP couplings can be easily suppressed in field theoretic ALP models with sensible UV completion. We discuss also the implication of our result for string theoretic ALP originating from higher-dimensional -form gauge fields, for instance for ALP in large volume string compactification scenario.

Inclusion of new LHC data in MMHT PDFs

    R.S. Thorne🇬🇧 · L.A. Harland-Lang🇬🇧 · A.D. Martin🇬🇧

I consider the effects of including a variety of new LHC data sets into the MMHT approach for PDF determination. I consider the impact of fitting new LHC and Tevatron data, which leads to clear improvements in some PDF uncertainties. There are specific issues with ATLAS 7 TeV jet data and I include a discussion of the treatment of correlated uncertainties and briefly the effects of NNLO corrections. I also present preliminary results with the inclusion of the high precison final ATLAS 7 TeV rapidity-dependent data.

    Triply heavy tetraquark states

    Jin-Feng Jiang🇨🇳 · Wei Chen🇨🇳 · Shi-Lin Zhu🇨🇳

Within the framework of QCD sum rules, we have investigated the tetraquark states with three heavy quarks. We systematically construct the interpolating currents for the possible , , , tetraquark states with quantum numbers and . Using these interpolating currents, we have calculated the two-point correlation functions and extracted the mass spectra for the above tetraquark states. We also discuss the decay patterns of these tetraquarks, and notice that the , , may decay quickly with a narrow width due to their mass spectra. The tetraquarks are expected to be very narrow resonances since their OZI-allowed decay modes are kinematically forbidden. These states may be searched for in the final states with a meson plus a light meson or photon.

Halo-independence with quantified maximum entropy at DAMA/LIBRA

    Andrew Fowlie🇦🇺

Using the DAMA/LIBRA anomaly as an example, we formalise the notion of halo-independence in the context of Bayesian statistics and quantified maximum entropy. We consider an infinite set of possible profiles, weighted by an entropic prior and constrained by a likelihood describing noisy measurements of modulated moments by DAMA/LIBRA. Assuming an isotropic dark matter (DM) profile in the galactic rest frame, we find the most plausible DM profiles and predictions for unmodulated signal rates at DAMA/LIBRA. The entropic prior contains an a priori unknown regularisation factor, , that describes the strength of our conviction that the profile is approximately Maxwellian. By varying , we smoothly interpolate between a halo-independent and a halo-dependent analysis, thus exploring the impact of prior information about the DM profile.

Complete NLO corrections to scattering and its irreducible background at the LHC

    Benedikt Biedermann🇩🇪 · Ansgar Denner🇩🇪 · Mathieu Pellen🇩🇪

The process receives several contributions of different orders in the strong and electroweak coupling constants. Using appropriate event selections, this process is dominated by vector-boson scattering (VBS) and has recently been measured at the LHC. It is thus of prime importance to estimate precisely each contribution. In this article we compute for the first time the full NLO QCD and electroweak corrections to VBS and its irreducible background processes with realistic experimental cuts. We do not rely on approximations but use complete amplitudes involving two different orders at tree level and three different orders at one-loop level. Since we take into account all interferences, at NLO level the corrections to the VBS process and to the QCD-induced irreducible background process contribute at the same orders. Hence the two processes cannot be unambiguously distinguished, and all contributions to the final state should be preferably measured together.

CP-Violation in the Two Higgs Doublet Model: from the LHC to EDMs

    Chien-Yi Chen🇨🇦 · Hao-Lin Li🇺🇸 · Michael Ramsey-Musolf🇺🇸

We study the prospective sensitivity to CP-violating Two Higgs Doublet Models from the 14 TeV LHC and future electric dipole moment (EDM) experiments. We concentrate on the search for a resonant heavy Higgs that decays to a boson and a SM-like Higgs h, leading to the final state. The prospective LHC reach is analyzed using the Boosted Decision Tree method. We illustrate the complementarity between the LHC and low energy EDM measurements and study the dependence of the physics reach on the degree of deviation from the alignment limit. In all cases, we find that there exists a large part of parameter space that is sensitive to both EDMs and LHC searches.

    Asymptotically Safe Standard Model Extensions?

    Giulio Maria Pelaggi🇮🇹 · Alexis D. Plascencia🇬🇧 · Alberto Salvio🇨🇭 · Francesco Sannino🇩🇰 · Juri Smirnov🇮🇹 · Alessandro Strumia🇨🇭

We consider theories with a large number of charged fermions and compute the renormalisation group equations for the gauge, Yukawa and quartic couplings resummed at leading order in . We construct extensions of the Standard Model where SU(2) and/or SU(3) are asymptotically safe. When the same procedure is applied to the Abelian U(1) factor, we find that the Higgs quartic can not be made asymptotically safe and stay perturbative at the same time.

and production via =8 TeV p-Pb collisions

    Leonard S. Kisslinger🇺🇸

We estimate differential rapidity cross sections for and production via p-Pb collisions at 8 TeV. We use the mixed heavy quark hybrid theory in which the are standard mesons while the and are mixed hybrids, approximately 50% standard states and 50% hybrid states. This is an extension of previous work on heavy-quark state production via A-A collisions at RHIC.

    Collider Probes of Axion-Like Particles

    Martin Bauer🇩🇪 · Matthias Neubert🇩🇪 · Andrea Thamm🇩🇪

Axion-like particles (ALPs), which are gauge-singlets under the Standard Model (SM), appear in many well-motivated extensions of the SM. Describing the interactions of ALPs with SM fields by means of an effective Lagrangian, we discuss ALP decays into SM particles at one-loop order, including for the first time a calculation of the decay rates for ALP masses below a few GeV. We argue that, if the ALP couples to at least some SM particles with couplings of order , its mass must be above 1 MeV. Taking into account the possibility of a macroscopic ALP decay length, we show that large regions of so far unconstrained parameter space can be explored by searches for the exotic, on-shell Higgs and decays , and in Run-2 of the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb. This includes the parameter space in which ALPs can explain the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. Considering subsequent ALP decays into photons and charged leptons, we show that the LHC provides unprecedented sensitivity to the ALP-photon and ALP-lepton couplings in the mass region above a few MeV, even if the relevant ALP couplings are loop suppressed and the and branching ratios are significantly less than 1. We also discuss constraints on the ALP parameter space from electroweak precision tests.

Consistent Dalitz plot analysis of Cabibbo-favored decays

    Franz Niecknig🇩🇪 · Bastian Kubis🇩🇪

We resume the study of the Cabibbo-favored charmed-meson decays in a dispersive framework that satisfies unitarity, analyticity, and crossing symmetry by construction. The formalism explicitly describes the strong final-state interactions between all three decay products and relies on pion-pion and pion-kaon phase shift input. For the first time, we show that the Dalitz plot obtained by the BESIII collaboration as well as the Dalitz plot data by CLEO and FOCUS can be described consistently, exploiting the isospin relation between the two coupled decay channels that provides better constraints on the subtraction constants.

Relating centrality to impact parameter in nucleus-nucleus collisions

    Sruthy Jyothi Das🇫🇷 · Giuliano Giacalone🇫🇷 · Pierre-Amaury Monard🇫🇷 · Jean-Yves Ollitrault🇫🇷

In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion experiments, one estimates the centrality of a collision by using a single observable, say , typically given by the transverse energy or the number of tracks observed in a dedicated detector. The correlation between and the impact parameter, , of the collision is then inferred by fitting a specific model of the collision dynamics, such as the Glauber model, to experimental data. The goal of this paper is to assess precisely which information about can be extracted from data without any specific model of the collision. Under the sole assumption that the probability distribution of for a fixed is Gaussian, we show that the probability distribution of the impact parameter in a narrow centrality bin can be accurately reconstructed up to centrality. We apply our methodology to data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. We propose a simple measure of the precision of the centrality determination, which can be used to compare different experiments.

Correspondence between a shaken honeycomb lattice and the Haldane model

    Michele Modugno🇪🇸 · Giulio Pettini🇮🇹

We investigate the correspondence between the tight-binding Floquet Hamiltonian of a periodically modulated honeycomb lattice and the Haldane model. We show that - though the two systems share the same topological phase diagram, as reported in a breakthrough experiment with ultracold atoms in a stretched honeycomb lattice [Jotzu et al., Nature 515, 237 (2014)] - the corresponding Hamiltonians are not equivalent, the one of the shaken lattice presenting a much richer structure.

Scaling laws for positron production in laser--electron-beam collisions

    T. G. Blackburn🇸🇪 · A. Ilderton🇬🇧 · C. D. Murphy🇬🇧 · M. Marklund🇸🇪

Showers of -rays and positrons are produced when a high-energy electron beam collides with a super-intense laser pulse. We present scaling laws for the electron beam energy loss, the -ray spectrum, and the positron yield and energy that are valid in the non-linear, radiation-reaction--dominated regime. As an application we demonstrate that by employing the collision of a GeV electron beam with a laser pulse of intensity , today's high-intensity laser facilities are capable of producing positrons per shot via light-by-light scattering.

BAO Extractor: bias and redshift space effects

    Takahiro Nishimichi🇯🇵 · Eugenio Noda🇮🇹 · Marco Peloso🇺🇸 · Massimo Pietroni🇮🇹

We study a new procedure to measure the sound horizon scale via Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). Instead of fitting the measured power spectrum (PS) to a theoretical model containing the cosmological informations and all the nonlinear effects, we define a procedure to project out (or to "extract") the oscillating component from a given nonlinear PS. We show that the BAO scale extracted in this way is extremely robust and, moreover, can be reproduced by simple theoretical models at any redshift. By using N-body simulations, we discuss the effect of the nonlinear evolution of the matter field, of redshift space distortions and of scale-dependent halo bias, showing that all these effects can be reproduced with sub-percent accuracy. We give a one-parameter theoretical model based on a simple (IR) modification of 1-loop perturbation theory, which reproduces the BAO scale from measurements of halo clustering in redshift space at better than level and does not need any external UV input, such as coefficients measured from N-body simulations.

Hollowness in pp scattering at the LHC

    Wojciech Broniowski🇵🇱 · Enrique Ruiz Arriola🇪🇸

We examine how the effect of hollowness in pp scattering at the LHC (minimum of the inelasticity profile at zero impact parameter) depends on modeling of the phase of the elastic scattering amplitude as a function of the momentum transfer. We study the cases of the constant phase, the Bailly, and the so called standard parameterizations. It is found that the 2D hollowness holds in the first two cases, whereas the 3D hollowness is a robust effect, holding for all explored cases.
