LHC signals for Singlet Neutrinos from a Natural Warped Seesaw (I)

    Kaustubh Agashe🇺🇸 · Peizhi Du🇺🇸 · Sungwoo Hong🇺🇸

Recently, it was shown in arXiv:1512.06742 that a straightforward implementation of the type I seesaw mechanism in a warped extra dimensional framework is in reality a {\em natural} realization of "inverse" seesaw, i.e., the Standard Model (SM) neutrino mass is dominantly generated by exchange of pseudo-Dirac {\em TeV}-mass SM singlet neutrinos. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, this scenario is {\em dual} to these singlet particles being composites of some new strong dynamics, along with the SM Higgs boson, with the rest of the SM particles being mostly elementary. We study signals from production of these heavy neutrinos at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We focus on the scenario where the strong sector has a global symmetry; such a left-right (LR) structure being motivated by consistency with the electroweak (EW) precision tests. The singlet neutrinos are charged under symmetry, thus can be produced from exchange, as in four-dimensional (4D) LR symmetric models. However, the direct coupling of light quarks to is negligible, due to also being composite; nonetheless, a sizable coupling can be induced by mixings among the various types of bosons. Furthermore, decays dominantly into the singlet and {\em composite} partner of charged lepton. This heavy charged lepton, in turn, decays into SM lepton, {\em plus} /Higgs, thus the latter can be used for extra identification of the signal. For a benchmark scenario with of mass 2 TeV and singlet neutrino of mass 750 GeV, we find that, in both the di-lepton + di-jet + Higgs and tri-lepton + Higgs channels, significant evidence can be seen at the LHC14 for an integrated luminosity of 300/fb and that even discovery is possible with slightly more luminosity.

The One-Loop Correction to Heavy Dark Matter Annihilation

    Grigory Ovanesyan🇺🇸 · Nicholas L. Rodd🇺🇸 · Tracy R. Slatyer🇺🇸 · Iain W. Stewart🇺🇸

We calculate the one-loop corrections to TeV scale dark matter annihilation in a model where the dark matter is described by an SU(2) triplet of Majorana fermions, such as the wino. We use this framework to determine the high and low-scale MS-bar matching coefficients at both the dark matter and weak boson mass scales at one loop. Part of this calculation has previously been performed in the literature numerically; we find our analytic result differs from the earlier work and discuss potential origins of this disagreement. Our result is used to extend the dark matter annihilation rate to NLL' (NLL+O() corrections) which enables a precise determination of indirect detection signatures in present and upcoming experiments.

Jet axes and universal transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation

    Duff Neill🇺🇸 · Ignazio Scimemi🇪🇸 · Wouter J. Waalewijn🇳🇱

We study the transverse momentum spectrum of hadrons in jets. By measuring the transverse momentum with respect to a judiciously chosen axis, we find that this observable is insensitive to (the recoil of) soft radiation. Furthermore, for small transverse momenta we show that the effects of the jet boundary factorize, leading to a new transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation function. In contrast to the usual TMD fragmentation functions, it does not involve rapidity divergences and is universal in the sense that it is independent of the type of process and number of jets. These results directly apply to sub-jets instead of hadrons. We discuss potential applications, which include studying nuclear modification effects in heavy-ion collisions and identifying boosted heavy resonances.

    Geometric Baryogenesis from Shift Symmetry

    Andrea De Simone🇮🇹 · Takeshi Kobayashi🇮🇹 · Stefano Liberati🇮🇹

We present a new scenario for generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe that is induced by a Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson. The shift symmetry naturally controls the operators in the theory, while allowing the NG boson to couple to the spacetime geometry as well as to the baryons. The cosmological background thus sources a coherent motion of the NG boson, which leads to baryogenesis. Good candidates of the baryon-generating NG boson are the QCD axion and axion-like fields. In these cases the axion induces baryogenesis in the early universe, and can also serve as dark matter in the late universe.

Threshold effects in P-wave bottom-strange mesons

    Pablo G. Ortega🇪🇸 · Jorge Segovia🇩🇪 · David R. Entem🇪🇸 · Francisco Fernández🇪🇸

Using a nonrelativistic constituent quark model in which the degrees of freedom are quark-antiquark and meson-meson components, we have recently shown that the thresholds play an important role in lowering the mass of the physical and states. This observation is also supported by other theoretical approaches such as lattice-regularised QCD or chiral unitary theory in coupled channels. Herein, we extend our computation to the lowest -wave mesons, taking into account the corresponding , and bottom-strange states predicted by the naive quark model and the and thresholds. We assume that mixing with and isospin-violating decays to are negligible. This computation is important because there is no experimental data in the sector for the equivalent (, ) heavy-quark multiplet and, as it has been seen in the sector, the naive theoretical result can be wrong by more than . Our calculation allows to introduce the coupling with the -wave channel and to compute the probabilities associated with the different Fock components of the physical state.

Baryon Non-Invariant Couplings in Higgs Effective Field Theory

    Luca Merlo🇪🇸 · Sara Saa🇪🇸 · Mario Sacristan-Barbero🇪🇸

The basis of leading operators which are not invariant under baryon number is constructed within the Higgs Effective Field Theory. This list contains 12 dimension six operators, which preserve the combination B-L, to be compared to only 6 operators for the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. The discussion on the independent flavour contractions is presented in detail for a generic number of fermion families adopting the Hilbert series technique.

Charged Higgs pair production and neutrino effects on the triple Higgs coupling

    Julien Baglio🇩🇪

Higgs pair production is one of the primary goals of the LHC program. Investigating the effects beyond the Standard Model (BSM) is then of high interest. Two cases are presented to exemplify the impact of BSM physics on Higgs pair production and on the triple Higgs coupling: first a review on charged Higgs pair production mostly in the context of Two-Higgs-Doublet of type II and in particular the Minimal Supersymmetric SM, second a study of the one-loop effects of a heavy neutrino on the triple Higgs coupling.

We calculate the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the excited charmonium associated with production from top-quark decay. Our results show that detecting the production from top-quark decay is very difficult, but the and productions have the potential to be detected at the LHC. If the prompt production from top-quark decay is really detected at the LHC, it will be useful not only for investigating production from top-quark decay but also for understanding the heavy quarkonium production mechanism.

Minima of the Scalar Potential in the Type II Seesaw Model: From Local to Global

    Xun-Jie Xu🇩🇪

The Type II seesaw model requires that its scalar doublet and triplet get specific patterns of VEVs and to accommodate neutrino masses. However, other types of minima could also exist in the scalar potential, which may strongly contradict to experimental observations. This paper studies when the minimum at and will be global and finds the necessary and sufficient condition for that, assuming that the lepton number violating term in the potential is perturbatively small.

Viable models for large non-standard neutrino interactions

    Yasaman Farzan🇮🇷

Thanks to high precision long baseline neutrino experiments such as NOA and DUNE, possible effects of Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSI) on neutrino oscillation data have received renewed interest in the last two years. It is however challenging to build models that can give rise to NSI with sizeable couplings discernible at neutrino oscillation experiments without violating the various existing experimental bounds. We introduce two viable models that can lead to neutral current NSI with sizable couplings. Both models are based on a new gauge symmetry with gauge boson of mass . We will highlight the common phenomenological features of these models and suggest ways to test them.

    Precision physics with QCD

    Antonio Pich🇪🇸

The four-loop determination of the strong coupling from fully inclusive observables is reviewed. Special attention is given to the low-energy measurement extracted from the hadronic decay width. A recent exhaustive analysis of the ALEPH data, exploring several complementary methodologies with very different sensitivities to inverse power corrections and duality violations, confirms the strong suppression of non-perturbative contributions to . It gives the value , which implies . The excellent agreement with the direct measurement at the peak, , provides a beautiful test of asymptotic freedom. Together with the most recent lattice average from FLAG and the NNLO determinations from , PDFs and collider data quoted by the PDG, these two inclusive determinations imply a world average value .

Model Independent Constraints on Charges of New Particles

    Dongjin Chway🇰🇷 · Radovan Dermisek🇺🇸 · Tae Hyun Jung🇰🇷 · Hyung Do Kim🇰🇷

Any particle that is charged under and can mediate the process through loops. Near the threshold for the new particle pair production, gauge boson exchanges necessitate the resummation of ladder diagrams. We discuss the leading log order matching of the one-loop result with non-relativistic effective theory resummed result. We show how the diphoton invariant mass spectrum varies depending on decay width, color representation and electric charge of the new particle. The exclusion limits on the product of and charges of the new scalar or fermion particle are obtained from current LHC data.

-Angular power spectrum in ALICE events

    Felipe J. Llanes-Estrada🇪🇸 · Jose L. Muñoz Martinez (Univ. Complutense de Madrid)🇪🇸

We study the particles emitted in the fireball following a Relativistic Heavy Ion Collision with the traditional angular analysis employed in cosmology and earth sciences, producing Mollweide plots of the p_t distribution of a few actual, publically released ALICE-collaboration events and calculating their angular power spectrum. With the limited statistics at hand, we do not find evidence for acoustic peaks but a decrease of C_l that is reminiscent of viscous attenuation, but subject to a strong effect from the rapidity acceptance which probably dominates (so we also subtract the m=0 component). As an exercise, we still extract a characteristic Silk damping length (proportional to the square root of the viscosity over entropy density ratio). The absence of acoustic-like peaks is also compatible with a crossover from the QGP to the hadron gas (because a surface tension at domain boundaries would effect a restoring force that could have driven acoustic oscillations). Presently an unexpected depression appears in the l=6 multipole strength, which should be revisited by the ALICE collaboration with full statistics to confirm or discard it.

A shoving model for collectivity in hadronic collisions

    Christian Bierlich🇸🇪 · Gösta Gustafson🇸🇪 · Leif Lönnblad🇸🇪

An extension of the rope hadronization model, which has previously provided good descriptions of hadrochemistry in high multiplicity pp collisions, is presented. The extension includes a dynamically generated transverse pressure, produced by the excess energy from overlapping strings. We find that this model can qualitatively reproduce soft features of Quark Gluon Plasma in small systems, such as higher for heavier particles and long range azimuthal correlations forming a ridge. The effects are similar to those obtained from a hydrodynamic expansion, but without assuming a thermalized medium.

    Nonperturbative Evolution of Parton Quasi-Distributions

    Anatoly Radyushkin🇺🇸

Using our formalism of parton virtuality distribution functions (VDFs) we establish a connection between the transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs) and quasi-distributions introduced recently by X. Ji for lattice QCD extraction of parton distributions . We build models for PQDs from the VDF-based models for soft TMDs, and analyze the dependence of the resulting PQDs. We observe a strong nonperturbative evolution of PQDs for small and moderately large values of reflecting the transverse momentum dependence of TMDs. Thus, the study of PQDs on the lattice in the domain of strong nonperturbative effects opens a new perspective for investigation of the 3-dimensional hadron structure.

Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking in Standard Model Extensions

    K.S. Babu🇺🇸 · Ilia Gogoladze🇺🇸 · S. Khan🇺🇸

We study the possibility of radiative electroweak symmetry breaking where loop corrections to the mass parameter of the Higgs boson trigger the symmetry breaking in various extensions of the Standard Model (SM). Although the mechanism fails in the SM, it is shown to be quite successful in several extensions which share a common feature of having an additional scalar around the TeV scale. The positive Higgs mass parameter at a high energy scale is turned negative in the renormalization group flow to lower energy by the cross couplings between the scalars in the Higgs potential. The type-II seesaw model with a TeV scale weak scalar triplet, a two-loop radiative neutrino mass model with new scalars at the TeV scale, the inert doublet model, scalar singlet dark matter model, and a universal seesaw model with an additional U(1) broken at the TeV scale are studied and shown to exhibit successful radiative electroweak symmetry breaking.

Flavour breaking effects in the pseudoscalar meson decay constants

The SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion in up, down and strange quark masses is extended from hadron masses to meson decay constants. This allows a determination of the ratio of kaon to pion decay constants in QCD. Furthermore when using partially quenched valence quarks the expansion is such that SU(2) isospin breaking effects can also be determined. It is found that the lowest order SU(3) flavour symmetry breaking expansion (or Gell-Mann-Okubo expansion) works very well. Simulations are performed for 2+1 flavours of clover fermions at four lattice spacings.

    Process-independent strong running coupling

    Daniele Binosi🇮🇹 · Cedric Mezrag🇺🇸 · Joannis Papavassiliou🇪🇸 · Craig D. Roberts🇺🇸 · Jose Rodriguez-Quintero🇪🇸

We unify two widely different approaches to understanding the infrared behaviour of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), one essentially phenomenological, based on data, and the other computational, realised via quantum field equations in the continuum theory. Using the latter, we explain and calculate a process-independent running-coupling for QCD, a new type of effective charge that is an analogue of the Gell-Mann--Low effective coupling in quantum electrodynamics. The result is almost identical to the process-dependent effective charge defined via the Bjorken sum rule, which provides one of the most basic constraints on our knowledge of nucleon spin structure. This reveals the Bjorken sum to be a near direct means by which to gain empirical insight into QCD's Gell-Mann--Low effective charge.

The (2380) dibaryon resonance width and decay branching ratios

    Avraham Gal🇮🇱

Attempts to reproduce theoretically the relatively small width, MeV, of the (2380) dibaryon resonance established by the WASA-at-COSY Collaboration are discussed. The validity of associating the (2380) in quark-based models primarily with a tightly bound configuration is questioned. The (2380) width and decay branching ratios into , and final states are studied within the Gal-Garcilazo hadronic model in which the (2380) is a resonance embedded in the continuum some 80 MeV below the threshold. In particular, predictions are made for the branching ratios of the unobserved yet decays which are suppressed in a purely- dibaryon model. Comments are also made on a possible connection of the ABC effect observed in the resonance reaction to the (2380) dibaryon.

Medium Recoils and background subtraction in JEWEL

    Raghav Kunnawalkam Elayavalli🇺🇸 · Korinna Christine Zapp🇨🇭

\textsc{Jewel} is a fully dynamical event generator for jet evolution in a dense QCD medium, which has been validated for multiple jet and jet-like observables. Jet constituents (partons) undergo collisions with thermal partons from the medium, leading to both elastic and radiative energy loss. The recoiling medium scattering centers carry away energy and momentum from the jet. Keeping track of these recoils is essential for the description of intra-jet observables. Since the thermal component of the recoils is part of the soft background activity, comparison with data on jet observables requires the implementation of a background subtraction procedure. We will show two independent procedures through which background subtraction can be performed and discuss the impact of the medium recoil on jet shape observables and jet-background correlations. Keeping track of the medium recoil significantly improves the \textsc{Jewel} description of jet shape measurements.

Correlated stopping, proton clusters and higher order proton cumulants

    Adam Bzdak🇵🇱 · Volker Koch🇺🇸 · Vladimir Skokov🇺🇸

We investigate possible effects of correlations between stopped nucleons on higher order proton cumulants at low energy heavy-ion collisions. We find that fluctuations of the number of wounded nucleons lead to rather nontrivial dependence of the correlations on the centrality; however, this effect is too small to explain the large and positive four-proton correlations found in the preliminary data collected by the STAR collaboration at GeV. We further demonstrate that, by taking into account additional proton clustering, we are able to qualitatively reproduce the preliminary experimental data. We speculate that this clustering may originate either from collective/multi-collision stopping which is expected to be effective at lower energies or from a possible first-order phase transition, or from (attractive) final state interactions. To test these ideas we propose to measure a mixed multi-particle correlation between stopped protons and a produced particle (e.g. pion, antiproton).

Testing sub-gravitational forces on atoms from a miniature, in-vacuum source mass

    Matt Jaffe🇺🇸 · Philipp Haslinger🇺🇸 · Victoria Xu🇺🇸 · Paul Hamilton🇺🇸 · Amol Upadhye🇺🇸 · Benjamin Elder🇺🇸 · Justin Khoury🇺🇸 · Holger Müller🇺🇸

Gravity is the weakest fundamental interaction and the only one that has not been measured at the particle level. Traditional experimental methods, from astronomical observations to torsion balances, use macroscopic masses to both source and probe gravitational fields. Matter wave interferometers have used neutrons, atoms and molecular clusters as microscopic test particles, but initially probed the field sourced by the entire earth. Later, the gravitational field arising from hundreds of kilograms of artificial source masses was measured with atom interferometry. Miniaturizing the source mass and moving it into the vacuum chamber could improve positioning accuracy, allow the use of monocrystalline source masses for improved gravitational measurements, and test new physics, such as beyond-standard-model ("fifth") forces of nature and non-classical effects of gravity. In this work, we detect the gravitational force between freely falling cesium atoms and an in-vacuum, centimeter-sized source mass using atom interferometry with state-of-the-art sensitivity. The ability to sense gravitational-strength coupling is conjectured to access a natural lower bound for fundamental forces, thereby representing an important milestone in searches for physics beyond the standard model. A local, in-vacuum source mass is particularly sensitive to a wide class of interactions whose effects would otherwise be suppressed beyond detectability in regions of high matter density. For example, our measurement strengthens limits on a number of cosmologically-motivated scalar field models, such as chameleon and symmetron fields, by over two orders of magnitude and paves the way toward novel measurements of Newton's gravitational constant G and the gravitational Aharonov-Bohm effect

Electroweak single-pion production off the nucleon: from threshold to high invariant masses

    R. González-Jiménez🇧🇪 · N. Jachowicz🇧🇪 · K. Niewczas🇧🇪 · J. Nys🇧🇪 · V. Pandey🇺🇸 · T. Van Cuyck🇧🇪 · N. Van Dessel🇧🇪

[Background] Neutrino-induced single-pion production (SPP) provides an important contribution to neutrino-nucleus interactions, ranging from intermediate to high energies. There exists a good number of low-energy models in the literature to describe the neutrinoproduction of pions in the region around the Delta resonance. Those models consider only lowest-order interaction terms and, therefore, fail in the high-energy region (pion-nucleon invariant masses, >2 GeV). [Purpose] Our goal is to develop a model for electroweak SPP off the nucleon, which is applicable to the entire energy range of interest for present and future neutrino-oscillation experiments. [Method] We start with the low-energy model of [Phys.Rev.D76,033005(2007)], which includes resonant contributions and background terms derived from the pion-nucleon Lagrangian of chiral-perturbation theory. Then, from the background contributions, we build a high-energy model using a Regge approach. The low- and high-energy models are combined, in a phenomenological way, into a hybrid model. [Results] The Hybrid model is identical to the low-energy model in the low-W region, but, for W>2 GeV, it implements the desired high-energy behavior dictated by Regge theory. We have tested the high-energy model by comparing with one-pion production data from electron and neutrino reactions. The Hybrid model is compared with electron-proton scattering data, with neutrino SPP data and with the predictions of the NuWro Monte Carlo event generator. [Conclusions] Our model is able to provide satisfactory predictions of the electroweak one-pion production cross section from pion threshold to high . Further investigation and more data are needed to better understand the mechanisms playing a role in the electroweak SPP process in the high-W region, in particular, those involving the axial current contributions.
