Gluino reach and mass extraction at the LHC in radiatively-driven natural SUSY

    Howard Baer🇺🇸 · Vernon Barger🇺🇸 · James S. Gainer🇺🇸 · Peisi Huang🇺🇸 · Michael Savoy🇺🇸 · Dibyashree Sengupta🇺🇸 · Xerxes Tata🇺🇸

Radiatively-driven natural SUSY (RNS) models enjoy electroweak naturalness at the level while respecting LHC sparticle and Higgs mass constraints. Gluino and top squark masses can range up to several TeV (with other squarks even heavier) but a set of light Higgsinos are required with mass not too far above GeV. Within the RNS framework, gluinos dominantly decay via or , where the decay products of the higgsino-like and are very soft. Gluino pair production is, therefore, signalled by events with up to four hard -jets and large . We devise a set of cuts to isolate a relatively pure gluino sample at the (high luminosity) LHC and show that in the RNS model with very heavy squarks, the gluino signal will be accessible for GeV for an integrated luminosity of 300 (3000) fb. We also show that the measurement of the rate of gluino events in the clean sample mentioned above allows for a determination of with a statistical precision of (depending on the integrated luminosity and the gluino mass) over the range of gluino masses where a discovery is possible at the LHC.

    Collective Phenomena in and Scattering

    Francesco Giovanni Celiberto🇮🇹 · Roberto Fiore🇮🇹 · László Jenkovszky🇺🇦

Bjorken scaling violation in deep inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS) is related to the rise of hadronic cross sections by using the additive quark model. Of special interest is the connection between saturation in the low- behavior of the DIS structure functions (SF) and possible slow-down of the cross section rise due to saturation effects. We also identify saturation effects in the DIS SF with phase transition that can be described by the Van der Waals equation of state.

A comprehensive revisit of the meson with improved Monte-Carlo based QCD sum rules

    Qi-Nan Wang🇨🇳 · Zhu-Feng Zhang🇨🇳 · T. G. Steele🇨🇦 · Hong-Ying Jin🇨🇳 · Zhuo-Ran Huang🇨🇳

We improve the Monte-Carlo based QCD sum rules by introducing the rigorous Hölder-inequality-determined sum rule window and a Breit-Wigner type parametrization for the phenomenological spectral function. In this improved sum rule analysis methodology, the sum rule analysis window can be determined without any assumptions on OPE convergence or the QCD continuum. Therefore an unbiased prediction can be obtained for the phenomenological parameters (the hadronic mass and width etc.). We test the new approach in the meson channel with re-examination and inclusion of corrections to dimension-4 condensates in the OPE. We obtain results highly consistent with experimental values. We also discuss the possible extension of this method to some other channels.

Strong constraints on self-interacting dark matter with light mediators

    Torsten Bringmann🇳🇴 · Felix Kahlhoefer🇩🇪 · Kai Schmidt-Hoberg🇩🇪 · Parampreet Walia🇳🇴

Coupling dark matter to light new particles is an attractive way to combine thermal production with strong velocity-dependent self-interactions. Here we point out that in such models the dark matter annihilation rate is generically enhanced by the Sommerfeld effect, and we derive the resulting constraints from the Cosmic Microwave Background and other indirect detection probes. For the frequently studied case of s-wave annihilation these constraints exclude the entire parameter space where the self-interactions are large enough to address the small-scale problems of structure formation.

Triggering Soft Bombs at the LHC

    Simon Knapen🇺🇸 · Simone Pagan Griso🇺🇸 · Michele Papucci🇺🇸 · Dean J. Robinson🇺🇸

Very high multiplicity, spherically-symmetric distributions of soft particles, with ~ few hundred MeV, may be a signature of strongly-coupled hidden valleys that exhibit long, efficient showering windows. With traditional triggers, such "soft bomb" events closely resemble pile-up and are therefore only recorded with minimum bias triggers at a very low efficiency. We demonstrate a proof-of-concept for a high-level triggering strategy that efficiently separates soft bombs from pile-up by searching for a "belt of fire": A high density band of hits on the innermost layer of the tracker. Seeding our proposed high-level trigger with existing jet, missing transverse energy or lepton hardware-level triggers, we show that net trigger efficiencies of order 10% are possible for bombs of mass several hundred GeV. We also consider the special case that soft bombs are the result of an exotic decay of the 125 GeV Higgs. The fiducial rate for "Higgs bombs" triggered in this manner is marginally higher than the rate achievable by triggering directly on a hard muon from associated Higgs production.

From the Glasma to the QCD Phase Boundary

    Larry McLerran🇺🇸

In this paper, I qualitatively discuss the matter formed in the fragmentation region of nuclear collisions at the highest energies. I argue that although the initial temperature and baryon number density can become very large, the ratio of initial baryon chemical potential to initial temperature is approximately independent of energy, when measured at a fixed rapidity measured from the end of the fragmentation region. This quantity is argued to be roughly invariant under expansion, and therefore the value measured at decoupling should be approximately the same as the initial value and largely independent of energy. The values of the initial temperature and initial baryon number are energy dependent and become large as the center of mass collision energy increases.

Exclusion limits on a scalar decaying to photons and distinguishing its production mechanisms

    Tanumoy Mandal🇸🇪

LHC run-II has a great potential to search for new resonances in the diphoton channel. Latest 13 TeV data already put stringent limits on the cross sections in the diphoton channel assuming the resonance is produced through the gluon-gluon fusion. Many beyond the Standard Model (SM) theories predict TeV-scale scalars, which copiously decay to diphotons. Apart from the gluon-gluon fusion production, these scalars can also be dominantly produced in other ways too at the LHC namely through the quark-quark fusion or the gauge boson fusions like the photon-photon, photon-, or fusions. In this paper, we use an effective field theory approach where a heavy scalar can be produced in various ways and recast the latest ATLAS diphoton resonance search to put model-independent limits on its mass and effective couplings to the SM particles. If a new scalar is discovered at the LHC, it would be very important to identify its production mechanism in order to probe the nature of the underlying theory. We show that combining various kinematic variables in a multivariate analysis can be very powerful to distinguish different production mechanisms one from the other.

Effective field theory, electric dipole moments and electroweak baryogenesis

    Csaba Balazs🇦🇺 · Graham White🇦🇺 · Jason Yue🇹🇼

Negative searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) heavily constrain models of baryogenesis utilising various higher dimensional charge and parity violating (CPV) operators. Using effective field theory, we create a model independent connection between these EDM constraints and the baryon asymmetry of the universe (BAU) produced during a strongly first order electroweak phase transition. The thermal aspects of the high scale physics driving the phase transition are paramaterised by the usual kink solution for the bubble wall profile. We find that operators involving derivatives of the Higgs field yield CPV contributions to the BAU containing derivatives of the Higgs vev, while non-derivative operators lack such contributions. Consequently, derivative operators cannot be eliminated in terms of non-derivative operators (via the equations of motion) if one is agnostic to the new physics that leads to the phase transition. Thus, we re-classify the independent dimension six operators, restricting ourselves to third generation quarks, gauge bosons and the Higgs. Finally, we calculate the BAU (as a function of the bubble wall width and the cutoff) for a derivative and a non-derivative operator, and relate it to the EDM constraints.

We start by studying the impact of the contribution of the partonic subprocesses that open at this order for the longitudinal structure function. We perform the full calculation analytically, and obtain the expression of the factorized cross section at this order. Special care is given to the study of their flavour decomposition structure. We analyze the phenomenological effect of the corrections finding that, even though expected to be small a priori, it turns out to be sizable with respect to the previous order know, calling for a full NNLO calculation.

The N2HDM under Theoretical and Experimental Scrutiny

    Margarete Muhlleitner🇩🇪 · Marco O.P. Sampaio🇵🇹 · Rui Santos🇵🇹 · Jonas Wittbrodt🇩🇪

The N2HDM is based on the CP-conserving 2HDM extended by a real scalar singlet field. Its enlarged parameter space and its fewer symmetry conditions as compared to supersymmetric models allow for an interesting phenomenology compatible with current experimental constraints, while adding to the 2HDM sector the possibility of Higgs-to-Higgs decays with three different Higgs bosons. In this paper the N2HDM is subjected to detailed scrutiny. Regarding the theoretical constraints we implement tests of tree-level perturbativity and vacuum stability. Moreover, we present, for the first time, a thorough analysis of the global minimum of the N2HDM. The model and the theoretical constraints have been implemented in ScannerS, and we provide N2HDECAY, a code based on HDECAY, for the computation of the N2HDM branching ratios and total widths including the state-of-the-art higher order QCD corrections and off-shell decays. We then perform an extensive parameter scan in the N2HDM parameter space, with all theoretical and experimental constraints applied, and analyse its allowed regions. We find that large singlet admixtures are still compatible with the Higgs data and investigate which observables will allow to restrict the singlet nature most effectively in the next runs of the LHC. Similarly to the 2HDM, the N2HDM exhibits a wrong-sign parameter regime, which will be constrained by future Higgs precision measurements.

The Physics of Heavy Quark Distributions in Hadrons: Collider Tests

    S.J. Brodsky🇺🇸 · V.A. Bednyakov🇷🇺 · G.I. Lykasov🇷🇺 · J. Smiesko🇸🇰 · S. Tokar🇸🇰

We present a review of the current understanding of the heavy quark distributions in the nucleon and their impact on collider physics. The origin of strange, charm and bottom quark pairs at high light-front (LF) momentum fractions in hadron wave functions---the "intrinsic" quarks, is reviewed. The determination of heavy-quark parton distribution functions (PDFs) is particularly significant for the analysis of hard processes at LHC energies. We show that a careful study of the inclusive production of open charm and the production of // particles, accompanied by the heavy jets at large transverse momenta can give essential information on the intrinsic heavy quark (IQ) distributions. We also focus on the theoretical predictions concerning other observables which are very sensitive to the intrinsic charm contribution to PDFs including Higgs production at high xf and novel fixed target measurements which can be tested at the LHC.

Exploring CP phase in -lepton Yukawa coupling in Higgs decays at the LHC

    Akanksha Bhardwaj🇮🇳 · Partha Konar🇮🇳 · Pankaj Sharma🇦🇺 · Abhaya Kumar Swain🇮🇳

We study the prospect of determining the CP violating phase in -lepton Yukawa coupling at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). While the current run is already exploring the production of a pair of the third generation leptons from Higgs decay, these measurements are not sensitive enough to constrain the CP violating phase. In this paper, several CP odd observables are proposed and analyzed utilizing the dominant channels with the semi-invisible hadronic decay of . Several asymmetries corresponding to the T odd momentum correlations are also studied and their sensitivities to the CP violating phase in tau-lepton Yukawa couplings are estimated at 13 TeV LHC with 1000 of integrated luminosity. We also present a novel way to reconstruct momentum at the LHC utilizing the information of impact parameter. Finally, we obtain that the asymmetries can be as large as 35 for a case of maximal CP violation in the Yukawa couplings.

Vector boson production in joint resummation

    Simone Marzani🇺🇸 · Vincent Theeuwes🇺🇸

We study the transverse momentum () distribution of an electro-weak vector boson produced via the Drell-Yan mechanism, in the context of joint resummation. This formalism allows for the simultaneous resummation of logarithmic contributions that are enhanced at small and at partonic threshold. We extend joint resummation to next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy and we present resummed and matched results for three different phenomenological setups. In particular, we study the production of a boson at the Tevatron and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as well as the production of a heavier at the LHC. We compare our findings to standard resummation, as well as to fixed-order perturbation theory. We find that joint resummation provides a moderate (but not flat) correction with respect to resummation and it leads to a reduction of the scale dependence of the results. However, our study also shows some limitations of this formalism. While the use of joint resummation for production at the Tevatron and production at the LHC appears to be justified, our implementation suffers from a stronger dependence on power corrections for processes which are further away from threshold, such as production at the LHC, for which we cannot claim an improvement over standard resummation.

Nonstandard neutrino interactions at DUNE, T2HK and T2HKK

    Jiajun Liao🇺🇸 · Danny Marfatia🇺🇸 · Kerry Whisnant🇺🇸

We study the matter effect caused by nonstandard neutrino interactions (NSI) in the next generation long-baseline neutrino experiments, DUNE, T2HK and T2HKK. If multiple NSI parameters are nonzero, the potential of these experiments to detect CP violation, determine the mass hierarchy and constrain NSI is severely impaired by degeneracies between the NSI parameters and by the generalized mass hierarchy degeneracy. In particular, a cancellation between leading order terms in the appearance channels when , strongly affects the sensitivities to these two NSI parameters at T2HK and T2HKK. We also study the dependence of the sensitivities on the true CP phase and the true mass hierarchy, and find that overall DUNE has the best sensitivity to the magnitude of the NSI parameters, while T2HKK has the best sensitivity to CP violation whether or not there are NSI. Furthermore, for T2HKK a smaller off-axis angle for the Korean detector is better overall. We find that due to the structure of the leading order terms in the appearance channel probabilities, the NSI sensitivities in a given experiment are similar for both mass hierarchies, modulo the phase change .

Spin polarizabilities and characteristics of spin-one hadrons related parity non-conservation in the the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau formalism

    N.V. Maksimenko🇧🇾 · E.V. Vakulina🇷🇺

In this paper the method of the relativistically-invariant effective tensor representation of Lagrangian decomposition and the amplitudes of the two-photon interaction with hadrons on photon energy is proposed. In the frames Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau formalism based on this method the spin polarizabilities of the spin 1 particles, which are characteristic for the spin 1/2 hadrons were established. Also the authors have obtained the new spin polarizabilities which are characteristic for spin 1 particles and are bounded with the presence of the tensor polarizabilities of these particles. It was shown that in the suggested covariant approach with regard to the crossing symmetry, the spatial parity, conservation laws and gauge invariance definite spin polarizabilities and gyrations of spin-1 particles contribute to the expansion of Compton scattering amplitude, starting from the corresponding orders on photon energy that is in the agreement with low-energy theorems for that process.

It is argued that the infrared fixed point is to be a determined in a renormalization scheme in which the series expansion for a physical quantity terminates.

Embedding cosmological inflation, axion dark matter and seesaw mechanism in a 3-3-1 gauge model

    J. G. Ferreira🇧🇷 · C. A de S. Pires🇧🇷 · J. G. Rodrigues🇧🇷 · P. S. Rodrigues da Silva🇧🇷

The Peccei-Quinn symmetry is an automatic symmetry of the 3-3-1 gauge models which, consequently are not plagued with the strong CP problem. Nevertheless, the axion that emerges from spontaneous breaking of Peccei-Quinn symmetry cannot be made invisible in the original versions of these models, unless we extend their scalar sector by an additional neutral scalar singlet. In this case we show that if, we also add heavy neutrinos in the singlet form, we get to solve three interesting open questions at once: the real component of the neutral scalar singlet driving inflation, the axion playing the role of the dark matter of the universe and standard neutrinos gaining masses through seesaw mechanism.

Resonant transitions induced in particle processes by the non-perturbative treatment of strong laser fields

    A. Hartin🇩🇪

Intense field quantum field theory (IFQFT) is used to determine new phenomenological predictions arising from Compton scattering and pair production in a strong laser field. This theory utilizes exact solutions of fermions embedded in external plane waves which carry over to a strong field fermion propagator. When these strong field fermions also interact with probe photons, the transition probability is enhanced in a series of resonances when the kinematics allow the virtual fermion to go on-shell. An analysis of parameters shows that contemporary experiments could already produce these predicted resonances. With appropriate tuning, resonances can be made arbitrarily sharp, leading to precision calculations of resonance locations and widths, and the runing of coupling constants in strong background fields. New tests of QED could be performed leading to ramifications for our understanding of the quantum vacuum. Such tests extend to QFT in background potentials in general, which may throw light on BSM theories such as QFT in curved space-times.

Symmetry and Action for Flavor-Kinematics Duality

    Clifford Cheung🇺🇸 · Chia-Hsien Shen🇺🇸

We propose a new representation of the nonlinear sigma model that exhibits a manifest duality between flavor and kinematics. The fields couple exclusively through cubic Feynman vertices which also serve as the structure constants of an underlying kinematic algebra. The action is invariant under a combination of internal and spacetime symmetries whose conservation equations imply flavor-kinematics duality, ensuring that all Feynman diagrams satisfy kinematic Jacobi identities. Substituting flavor for kinematics, we derive a new cubic action for the special Galileon theory. In this picture, the vanishing soft behavior of amplitudes is a byproduct of the Weinberg soft theorem.

Finite remainders of the Konishi at two loops in SYM

We present three point form factors (FF) in Super Yang Mills theory for both the half-BPS and the Konishi operators at two loop level in the `t Hooft coupling using Feynman diagrammatic approach. We have chosen on shell final states consisting of and , where are scalar, Majorana fermion and gauge fields respectively. The computation is done both in the modified dimensional reduction as well as in the four dimensional helicity scheme. We have studied the universal structure of infrared (IR) singularities in these FFs using Catani's IR subtraction operators. Exploiting the factorisation property of the IR singularities and following BDS like ansatz for the IR sensitive terms in FFs, we determine the finite remainders of them. We find that the finite remainders of FFs of the half-BPS for both the choices of final states give not only identical results but also contain terms of uniform transcendentality of weight two and four at one and two loop levels, respectively. In the case of the Konishi operator, the finite remainders depend on the external states and do not exhibit uniform transcendentality. However, surprisingly, the leading transcendental terms for agree with that of the half-BPS. We have demonstrated the role of on shell external states for the FFs in the context of maximum transcendentality principle.

Rare Event Statistics Applied to Fast Radio Bursts

    Scott Vander Wiel · Sarah Burke-Spolaor · Earl Lawrence · Casey J. Law · Geoffrey C. Bower

Statistical interpretation of sparsely sampled event rates has become vital for new transient surveys, particularly those aimed at detecting fast radio bursts (FRBs). We provide an accessible reference for a number of simple, but critical, statistical questions relevant for current transient and FRB research and utilizing the negative binomial model for counts in which the count rate parameter is uncertain or randomly biased from one study to the next. We apply these methods to re-assess and update results from previous FRB surveys, finding as follows. 1) Thirteen FRBs detected across five high-Galactic-latitude (> 30) surveys are highly significant evidence of a higher rate relative to the single FRB detected across four low-latitude (< 5) surveys, even after accounting for effects that dampen Galactic plane sensitivity. High- vs. mid-latitude (5 to 15) is marginally significant . 2) A meta analysis of twelve heterogeneous surveys gives an FRB rate of 2866 sky day above 1 Jy at high Galactic latitude (95% confidence 1121 to 7328) and 285 sky day at low/mid latitudes (95% from 48 to 1701). 3) Using the Parkes HTRU high-latitude setup requires 193 observing hours to achieve 50% probability of detecting an FRB and 937 hours to achieve 95% probability, based on the ten detections of (Champion et al. 2016) and appropriately accounting for uncertainty in the unknown Poisson rate. 4) Two quick detections at Parkes from a small number of high-latitude fields (Ravi et al. 2015; Petroff et al. 2015) tentatively favor a look long survey style relative to the scan wide HTRU survey, but only at significance.

In particular the formulation is governed by a geometric torsion in second order with an on-shell NS form in first order. We consider supersymmetric gauge theories in the conformal window. By applying a suitable matter superfield rescaling and a Weyl-transformation the renormalisation group running (matter and gauge field -factors) are absorbed into the metric. The latter becomes a function of the -factors. The Euler flow is then obtained by free field theory computation with the non-trivial dynamics coming from expanding the Euler invariant in the flow dependent metric. The result is therefore directly obtained in terms of the infrared anomalous dimension confirming an earlier result using the matching of conserved currents.

    R. Raikin🇷🇺 · T. Serebryakova🇷🇺 · A. Lagutin🇷🇺 · N. Volkov🇷🇺

On the basis of the scaling approach and CORSIKA simulations data the radial scale factor of lateral distribution of electrons in extensive air showers is confirmed as potentially effective primary mass estimator, and its sensitivity to hadronic interaction model is investigated. It is shown that improved composition results both on average and event-by-event basis can be achieved taking into account the universality property of air shower development expressed by the relation between radial scale factor and longitudinal age parameter. The enhancements of such a theoretically motivated tool for the unbiased cosmic ray composition deduction in a wide primary energy range from (multi-)hybrid air shower measurements of nearest future are discussed.

Quarkonium wave functions on the light front

    Yang Li🇺🇸

We study heavy quarkonium within the light-front Hamiltonian formalism. Our effective Hamiltonian is based on the holographic QCD confining potential and the one-gluon exchange interaction with a running coupling. The obtained spectra are compared with experimental measurements. We present a set of light-front wave functions, which exhibit rich structure and are consistent with the nonrelativistic picture. Finally, we use the wave functions to compute the charge and mass radii.

Majorana Fermions in Particle Physics, Solid State and Quantum Information

    L. Borsten🇮🇪 · M. J. Duff🇬🇧

This review is based on lectures given by M. J. Duff summarising the far reaching contributions of Ettore Majorana to fundamental physics, with special focus on Majorana fermions in all their guises. The theoretical discovery of the eponymous fermion in 1937 has since had profound implications for particle physics, solid state and quantum computation. The breadth of these disciplines is testimony to Majorana's genius, which continues to permeate physics today. These lectures offer a whistle-stop tour through some limited subset of the key ideas. In addition to touching on these various applications, we will draw out some fascinating relations connecting the normed division algebras to spinors, trialities, -theory and the classification of stable topological states of symmetry-protected gapped free-fermion systems.

    DAMA/LIBRA results and perspectives

    R. Bernabei (1)🇮🇹 · P. Belli (1)🇮🇹 · S. d'Angelo (1)🇮🇹 · A. Di Marco (1)🇮🇹 · F. Montecchia (1,5)🇮🇹 · A. d'Angelo (2)🇮🇹 · A. Incicchitti (2)🇮🇹 · F. Cappella (3)🇮🇹 · V. Caracciolo (3)🇮🇹 · R. Cerulli (3)🇮🇹 · C.J. Dai (4)🇨🇳 · H.L. He (4)🇨🇳 and 5 other authors

The DAMA/LIBRA experiment ( 250 kg of highly radio-pure NaI(Tl)) is running deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the I.N.F.N. Here we briefly recall the results obtained in its first phase of measurements (DAMA/LIBRA--phase1, total exposure: 1.04 ton yr). DAMA/LIBRA--phase1 and the former DAMA/NaI (cumulative exposure: ton yr) give evidence at 9.3 C.L. for the presence of DM particles in the galactic halo by exploiting the model-independent DM annual modulation signature. No systematic or side reaction able to mimic the exploited DM signature has been found or suggested by anyone over more than a decade. At present DAMA/LIBRA--phase2 is running with increased sensitivity.

Axion-like particles and the propagation of gamma rays over astronomical distances

    S.V. Troitsky🇷🇺

In this mini-review, possible manifestations of mixing between axion-like particles (ALPs) and energetic photons propagating over astronomical distances are considered. We discuss the evidence for the anomalous transparency of the Universe from observations of ensembles of distant gamma-ray sources, present the general formalism for the ALP-photon mixing and explain how this mechanism may remove the anomaly. We present relevant values of ALP parameters and discuss future ways to verify the scenario and to discover the particle in question.

Mixing of charged and neutral Bose condensates at nonzero temperature and magnetic field

    Alexander Haber🇦🇹 · Andreas Schmitt🇬🇧

It is expected that in the interior of compact stars a proton superconductor coexists with and couples to a neutron superfluid. Starting from a field-theoretical model for two complex scalar fields - one of which is electrically charged - we derive a Ginzburg-Landau potential which includes entrainment between the two fluids and temperature effects from thermal excitations of the two scalar fields and the gauge field. The Ginzburg-Landau description is then used for an analysis of the phase structure in the presence of an external magnetic field. In particular, we study the effect of the superfluid on the flux tube phase by computing the various critical magnetic fields and deriving an approximation for the flux tube interaction. As a result, we point out differences to the naive expectations from an isolated superconductor, for instance the existence of a first-order flux tube onset, resulting in a more complicated phase structure in the region between type-I and type-II superconductivity.
