Collectivity in small collision systems : an initial state perspective

    Sören Schlichting🇺🇸 · Prithwish Tribedy🇺🇸

Measurements of multi-particle correlations in the collisions of small systems such as , show striking similarity to the observations in heavy ion collisions. A number of observables measured in the high multiplicity events of these systems resemble features that are attributed to collectivity driven by hydrodynamics. However alternative explanations based on initial state dynamics are able to describe many characteristic features of these measurements. In this brief review we highlight some of the recent developments and outstanding issues in this direction.

    states: masses, production, and decays

    Marek Karliner🇮🇱 · Jonathan L. Rosner🇺🇸 · Shmuel Nussinov🇮🇱

The question of whether there exist bound states of two heavy quarks and antiquarks , distinct from a pair of quark-antiquark mesons, has been debated for more than forty years. We suggest some means of producing and observing resonant states, concentrating on the channel which is most easily produced and the channel which has a better chance of being relatively narrow. We obtain MeV and MeV, for the charmed and bottom tetraquarks, respectively. Experimental search for these states in the relevant mass region is highly desirable.

Multicomponent Dark Matter from Gauge Symmetry

    Giorgio Arcadi🇩🇪 · Christian Gross🇫🇮 · Oleg Lebedev🇫🇮 · Yann Mambrini🇫🇷 · Stefan Pokorski🇵🇱 · Takashi Toma🇫🇷

The composition of Dark Matter (DM) remains an important open question. The current data do not distinguish between single- and multi-component DM, while in theory constructions it is often assumed that DM is composed of a single field. In this work, we study a hidden sector which naturally entails multicomponent DM consisting of spin-1 and spin-0 states. This UV complete set-up is based on SU(3) hidden gauge symmetry with the minimal scalar field content to break it spontaneously. The presence of multiple DM components is a result of a residual Z_2 x Z'_2 symmetry which is part of an unbroken global U(1) x Z'_2 inherent in the Yang-Mills systems. We find that the model exhibits various parametric regimes with drastically different DM detection prospects. In particular, we find that the direct detection cross section is much suppressed in large regions of parameter space as long as the Standard Model Higgs mixes predominantly with a single scalar from the hidden sector. The resulting scattering rate is often beyond the level of sensitivity of XENON1T, while still being consistent with the thermal WIMP paradigm.

Chiral Effective Theory of Dark Matter Direct Detection

    Fady Bishara🇬🇧 · Joachim Brod🇩🇪 · Benjamin Grinstein🇺🇸 · Jure Zupan🇺🇸

We present the effective field theory for dark matter interactions with the visible sector that is valid at scales of O(1 GeV). Starting with an effective theory describing the interactions of fermionic and scalar dark matter with quarks, gluons and photons via higher dimension operators that would arise from dimension-five and dimension-six operators above electroweak scale, we perform a nonperturbative matching onto a heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory that describes dark matter interactions with light mesons and nucleons. This is then used to obtain the coefficients of the nuclear response functions using a chiral effective theory description of nuclear forces. Our results consistently keep the leading contributions in chiral counting for each of the initial Wilson coefficients.

Phenomenology of hard diffraction at high energies

    Magno V. T. Machado🇧🇷

We present some of the topics covered in two lectures under the same title that were given at the "Summer School on High Energy Physics at the LHC: New trends in HEP" in Natal, Brazil. In this contribution we give a brief review on the application of perturbative QCD to the hard diffractive processes. Some examples of phenomenology for the diffractive production of , heavy and quarkonium in hadron-hadron reactions are presented. It is also discussed the exclusive diffractive processes in interactions. They are in general driven by the gluon content of proton which is strongly subject to parton saturation effects in the very high energy limit. These saturation effects are well described within the color dipole formalism. We present some examples of corresponding phenomenology as the elastic vector meson production and the DVCS relying on the color dipole approach.

    Metastable dark energy

    Ricardo G. Landim🇧🇷 · Elcio Abdalla🇧🇷

We build a model of metastable dark energy, in which the observed vacuum energy is the value of the scalar potential at the false vacuum. The scalar potential is given by a sum of even self-interactions up to order six. The deviation from the Minkowski vacuum is due to a term suppressed by the Planck scale. The decay time of the metastable vacuum can easily accommodate a mean life time compatible with the age of the universe. The metastable dark energy is also embedded into a model with symmetry. The dark energy doublet and the dark matter doublet naturally interact with each other. A three-body decay of the dark energy particle into (cold and warm) dark matter can be as long as large fraction of the age of the universe, if the mediator is massive enough, the lower bound being at intermediate energy level some orders below the grand unification scale. Such a decay shows a different form of interaction between dark matter and dark energy, and the model opens a new window to investigate the dark sector from the point-of-view of particle physics.

Estimate on Spin Asymmetry for Drell-Yan Process at Fermilab with Tensor-Polarized Deuteron

    S. Kumano🇯🇵 · Qin-Tao Song🇯🇵

There are four new structure functions for the spin-1 deuteron in comparison with the ones for the spin-1/2 proton, and they are called , , , and . The twist-2 structure functions and are expressed by tensor-polarized parton distribution functions in the deuteron. HERMES measurements of are much different from the prediction of the standard deuteron model with D-state admixture. It indicates that the structure functions and probe an interesting new aspect in the deuteron. There is an approved experiment at JLab to measure and it is expected to start in 2019. On the other hand, the measurement of tensor-polarized distributions is under consideration at Fermilab by the Drell-Yan process with the unpolarized proton beam and tensor-polarized deuteron target. It is expected to provide crucial information on tensor-polarized antiquark distributions. Since the distributions are small quantities, it is important to estimate the tensor-polarized spin asymmetry theoretically to find experimental feasibility for an actual proposal at Fermilab.

Bayesian inference of non-positive spectral functions in quantum field theory

    Alexander Rothkopf🇩🇪

We present the generalization to non positive definite spectral functions of a recently proposed Bayesian deconvolution approach (BR method). The novel prior used here retains many of the beneficial analytic properties of the original method, in particular it allows us to integrate out the hyperparameter directly. To preserve the underlying axiom of scale invariance, we introduce a second default-model related function, whose role is discussed. Our reconstruction prescription is contrasted with existing direct methods, as well as with an approach where shift functions are introduced to compensate for negative spectral features. A mock spectrum analysis inspired by the study of gluon spectral functions in QCD illustrates the capabilities of this new approach.

Probing lepton flavour (universality) violation at NA62 and future kaon experiments

    Lewis C. Tunstall🇨🇭 · Andreas Crivellin🇨🇭 · Giancarlo D'Ambrosio🇮🇹 · Martin Hoferichter🇺🇸

Recent results from the LHC's first run have revealed intriguing departures from lepton flavour universality in the semi-leptonic decays of -mesons. We discuss the complementary role that rare kaon decays can provide in testing new physics explanations of these flavour anomalies. In the framework of minimal flavour violation, we relate the chiral low-energy constants involved in and () with the new physics Wilson coefficients of the effective Hamiltonian. We comment on the determination of these low-energy constants at NA62 and future kaon experiments, as well as the required improvements in sensitivity necessary to test the -physics anomalies in the kaon sector.

The one loop gluon emission light cone wave function

    Tuomas Lappi🇫🇮 · Risto Paatelainen🇪🇸

Light cone perturbation theory has become an essential tool to calculate cross sections for various small- dilute-dense processes such as deep inelastic scattering and forward proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions. Here we set out to do one loop calculations in an explicit helicity basis in the four dimensional helicity scheme. As a first process we calculate light cone wave function for one gluon emission to one-loop order in Hamiltonian perturbation theory on the light front. We regulate ultraviolet divergences with transverse dimensional regularization and soft divergences with using a cut-off on longitudinal momentum. We show that when all the renormalization constants are combined, the ultraviolet divergences can be absorbed into the standard QCD running coupling constant, and give an explicit expression for the remaining finite part.

Heavy-Quark Diffusion Dynamics in Quark-Gluon Plasma under Strong Magnetic Fields

    Koichi Hattori🇨🇳 · Kenji Fukushima🇯🇵 · Ho-Ung Yee🇺🇸 · Yi Yin🇺🇸

We discuss heavy-quark dynamics in the quark-gluon plasma under a strong magnetic field induced by colliding nuclei. By the use of the diagrammatic resummation techniques for Hard Thermal Loop and the external magnetic field, we show analytic results of heavy-quark diffusion coefficient and drag force which become anisotropic due to the preferred spatial orientation in the magnetic field. We argue that the anisotropic diffusion coefficient gives rise to an enhancement/suppression of the heavy-quark elliptic flow depending on the transverse momentum.

    Investigations of the -multi- interactions

    C. W. Xiao🇩🇪

In the present work, which aims at searching for bound sates, the interactions of the -multi- systems are investigated by means of the formalism of the fixed-center-approximation to Faddeev equations. Reproducing the states of and dynamically in the two-body and interactions, respectively, as the clusters of the fixed center approximation, the state of is found as a molecule of or structures in the three-body interactions, where we determine its quantum number and find another possible state of with isospin . In our results, there are some other predictions with uncertainties, a state with in the four-body interactions, a narrow state with , a wide state of , and another wide state but with in the five-body interactions, and a state with in the six-body interactions. Our results are consistent with the findings of quark models.

Double-real corrections at O(alpha alpha_s) to single gauge boson production

    Roberto Bonciani🇮🇹 · Federico Buccioni🇨🇭 · Roberto Mondini🇺🇸 · Alessandro Vicini🇮🇹

We consider the O(alpha alpha_s) corrections to single on-shell gauge boson production at hadron colliders. We concentrate on the contribution of all the subprocesses where the gauge boson is accompanied by the emission of two additional real partons and we evaluate the corresponding total cross sections. The latter are divergent quantities, because of soft and collinear emissions, and are expressed as Laurent series in the dimensional regularization parameter. The total cross sections are evaluated by means of reverse unitarity, i.e. expressing the phase-space integrals in terms of two-loop forward box integrals with cuts on the final state particles. The results are reduced to a combination of Master Integrals, which eventually are evaluated in terms of Generalized Polylogarithms. The presence of internal massive lines in the Feynman diagrams, due to the exchange of electroweak gauge bosons, causes the appearance of 14 Master Integrals which were not previously known in the literature and have been evaluated via Differential Equations.

KaTie: for parton-level event generation with k_T-dependent initial states

    A. van Hameren🇵🇱

KaTie is a parton-level event generator for hadron scattering processes that can deal with partonic initial-state momenta with an explicit transverse momentum dependence causing them to be space-like. Provided with the necessary transverse momentum dependent parton density functions, it calculates the off-shell matrix elements and performs the phase space importance sampling to produce weighted events, for example in the Les Houches Event File format. It can deal with arbitrary processes within the Standard Model, for up to four final-state particles and beyond. Furthermore, it can produce events for single-parton scattering as well as for multi-parton scattering.

Cosmological Implications of QGP Bulk Viscosity

    Sampurn Anand🇮🇳 · Abhishek Atreya🇮🇳 · Jitesh R. Bhatt🇮🇳

Recent studies of the hot QCD matter indicate that the bulk viscosity () of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) rises sharply near the critical point of the QCD phase transition. In this work, we show that such a sharp rise of the bulk viscosity will lead to an effective negative pressure near the critical temperature, which in turn drives the Universe to inflate. This inflation has a natural graceful exist when the viscous effect evanesce. We estimate that, depending upon the peak value of , universe expands by a factor of to times in a very short span ( seconds). Another important outcome of the bulk viscosity dominated dynamics is the cavitation of QGP around . This would lead to the phenomenon of formation of cavitation bubbles within the QGP phase. The above scenario is independent of the order of QCD phase transition. We delineate some of the important cosmological consequences of the inflation and the cavitation.

Neutrino Mass, Electron Capture and the Shake-off Contributions

    Amand Faessler🇩🇪 · Loredana Gastaldo🇩🇪 · Fedor Simkovic🇸🇰

Electron capture can determine the electron neutrino mass, while the beta decay of Tritium measures the electron antineutrino mass and the neutrinoless double beta decay observes the Majorana neutrino mass. Electron capture e. g. on 163Ho plus bound electron to 163Dy* plus neutrino can determine the electron neutrino mass from the upper end of the decay spectrum of the excited Dy*, which is given by the Q-Value minus the neutrino mass. The Dy* states decay by X-ray and Auger electron emissions. The total decay energy is measured in a bolometer. These excitations have been studied by Robertson and by Faessler et al.. In addition the daughter atom Dy can also be excited by moving in the capture process one electron into the continuum. The escape of these continuum electrons is automatically included in the experimental bolometer spectrum. Recently a method developed by Intemann and Pollock was used by DeRujula and Lusignoli for a rough estimate of this shake-off process for "s" wave electrons in capture on 163Ho. The purpose of the present work is to give a more reliable description of "s" wave shake-off in electron capture on Holmium. For that one needs very accurate atomic wave functions of Ho in its ground state and excited atomic wave functions of Dy* including a description of the continuum electrons. In the present approach the wave functions of Ho and Dy* are determined selfconsistently with the antisymmetrized relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Fock approach. The relativistic continuum electron wave functions for the ionized Dy* are obtained in the corresponding selfconsistent Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Potential. In this improved approach shake-off can hardly be seen after electron capture in 163Ho and thus can probably not affect the determination of the electron neutrino mass.

Holographic Corrections to Meson Scattering Amplitudes

    Adi Armoni🇬🇧 · Edwin Ireson🇬🇧

We compute meson scattering amplitudes using the holographic duality between confining gauge theories and string theory, in order to consider holographic corrections to the Veneziano amplitude and associated higher-point functions. The generic nature of such computations is explained, thanks to the well-understood nature of confining string backgrounds, and two different examples of the calculation in given backgrounds are used to illustrate the details. The effect we discover, whilst only qualitative, is re-obtainable in many such examples, in four-point but also higher point amplitudes.

In addition, they are expected to shed light on the phenomenological quenching of that is required in nuclear many-body calculations.

    Neutrino Interactions and Long-Baseline Experiments

    Ulrich Mosel🇩🇪

The extraction of neutrino mixing parameters and the CP-violating phase requires knowledge of the neutrino energy. This energy must be reconstructed from the final state of a neutrino-nucleus reaction since all long-baseline experiments use nuclear targets. This reconstruction requires detailed knowledge of the neutrino reactions with bound nucleons and of the final state interactions of hadrons with the nuclear environment. Quantum-kinetic transport theory can be used to build an event generator for this reconstruction that takes basic nuclear properties, such as binding, into account. Some examples are discussed that show the effects of nuclear interactions on observables in long-baseline experiments

Cosmological perturbations in an effective and genuinely phantom dark energy Universe

    Imanol Albarran🇵🇹 · Mariam Bouhmadi-López🇪🇸 · João Morais🇪🇸

We carry out an analysis of the cosmological perturbations in general relativity for three different models which are good candidates to describe the current acceleration of the Universe. These three set-ups are described classically by perfect fluids with a phantom nature and represent deviations from the most widely accepted CDM model. In addition, each of the models under study induce different future singularities or abrupt events known as (i) Big Rip, (ii) Little Rip and (iii) Little Sibling of the Big Rip. Only the first one is regarded as a true singularity since it occurs at a finite cosmic time. For this reason, we refer to the others as abrupt events. With the aim to find possible footprints of this scenario in the Universe matter distribution, we not only obtain the evolution of the cosmological scalar perturbations but also calculate the matter power spectrum for each model. We have carried the perturbations in the absence of any anisotropic stress and within a phenomenological approach for the speed of sound. We constrain observationally these models using several measurements of the growth rate function, more precisely , and compare our results with the observational ones.

RN-AdS Nontopoligical Solitons in Broken Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs Theory

    Ethan P. Honda🇺🇸

Results are presented from numerical simulations of the Einstein-Maxwell-Higgs equations with a broken U(1) symmetry. Coherent nontopological soliton solutions are shown to exist that separate an Anti-de Sitter (AdS) true vacuum interior from a Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) false vacuum exterior. The stability of these bubble solutions is tested by perturbing the charge of the coherent solution and evolving the time-dependent equations of motion. In the weak gravitational limit, the short-term stability depends on the sign of , similar to q-balls. The long-term end state of the perturbed solutions demonstrates a rich structure and is visualized using "phase diagrams." Regions of both stability and instability are shown to exist for , while solutions with were observed to be entirely unstable. Threshold solutions are shown to demonstrate time-scaling laws, and the space separating true and false vacuum end states is shown to be fractal in nature, similar to oscillons. Coherent states with superextremal charge-to-mass ratios are shown to exist and observed to collapse or expand, depending on the sign of the charge perturbation. Expanding superextremal bubbles induce a phase transition to the true AdS vacuum, while collapsing superextremal bubbles can form nonsingular strongly gravitating solutions with superextremal RN exteriors.

Finite Size Scaling of the Higgs-Yukawa Model near the Gaussian Fixed Point

    David Y.-J. Chu🇹🇼 · Karl Jansen🇩🇪 · Bastian Knippschild🇩🇪 · C.-J. David Lin🇹🇼 · Attila Nagy🇩🇪

We study the scaling properties of Higgs-Yukawa models. Using the technique of Finite-Size Scaling, we are able to derive scaling functions that describe the observables of the model in the vicinity of a Gaussian fixed point. A feasibility study of our strategy is performed for the pure scalar theory in the weak-coupling regime. Choosing the on-shell renormalisation scheme gives us an advantage to fit the scaling functions against lattice data with only a small number of fit parameters. These formulae can be used to determine the universality of the observed phase transitions, and thus play an essential role in future investigations of Higgs-Yukawa models, in particular in the strong Yukawa coupling region.

Holographic Thermalization and Generalized Vaidya-AdS Solutions in Massive Gravity

    Ya-Peng Hu🇨🇳 · Xiao-Xiong Zeng🇨🇳 · Hai-Qing Zhang🇳🇱

We investigate the effect of massive graviton on the holographic thermalization process. Before doing this, we first find out the generalized Vaidya-AdS solutions in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity by directly solving the gravitational equations. Then, we study the thermodynamics of these Vaidya-AdS solutions by using the Minsner-Sharp energy and unified first law, which also shows that the massive gravity is in a thermodynamic equilibrium state. Moreover, we adopt the two-point correlation function at equal time to explore the thermalization process in the dual field theory, and to see how the graviton mass parameter affects this process from the viewpoint of AdS/CFT correspondence. Our results show that the graviton mass parameter will increase the holographic thermalization process.
