W production at LHC: lepton angular distributions and reference frames for probing hard QCD

    E. Richter-Was🇵🇱 · Z. Was🇵🇱

Precision tests of the Standard Model in the Strong and Electroweak sectors play an important role, among the physics goals of LHC experiments. Because of the nature of proton-proton processes, observables based on the measurement of the direction and energy of leptons provide the most precise signatures. In the present paper, we concentrate on the angular distribution of leptons from W to l nu decays in the lepton-pair rest-frame. The vector nature of the intermediate state imposes that distributions are to a good precision described by spherical polynomials of at most second order. We argue, that contrary to general belief often expressed in the literature, the full set of angular coefficients can be measured experimentally, despite the presence in the final state of neutrino escaping detection. There is thus no principle difference with respect to the phenomenology of the Z/gamma to l^+ l^- Drell-Yan process. We show also, that with the proper choice of the coordinate frames, only one coefficient in this polynomial decomposition remains sizable, even in the presence of one or more high p_T jets. The necessary stochastic choice of the frames relies on probabilities independent from any coupling constants. In this way, electroweak effects (dominated by the V-A nature of W couplings to fermions) can be better separated from the ones of strong interactions. The separation is convenient for the measurements interpretation.

Pathways to Naturally Small Dirac Neutrino Masses

    Ernest Ma🇺🇸 · Oleg Popov🇺🇸

If neutrinos are truly Dirac fermions, the smallness of their masses may still be natural if certain symmetries exist beyond those of the standard model of quarks and leptons. We perform a systematic study of how this may occur at tree level and in one loop. We also propose a scotogenic version of the left-right gauge model with naturally small Dirac neutrino masses in one loop.

Thermal Dark Matter From A Highly Decoupled Sector

    Asher Berlin🇺🇸 · Dan Hooper🇺🇸 · Gordan Krnjaic🇺🇸

It has recently been shown that if the dark matter is in thermal equilibrium with a sector that is highly decoupled from the Standard Model, it can freeze-out with an acceptable relic abundance, even if the dark matter is as heavy as ~1-100 PeV. In such scenarios, both the dark and visible sectors are populated after inflation, but with independent temperatures. The lightest particle in the dark sector will be generically long-lived, and can come to dominate the energy density of the universe. Upon decaying, these particles can significantly reheat the visible sector, diluting the abundance of dark matter and thus allowing for dark matter particles that are much heavier than conventional WIMPs. In this paper, we present a systematic and pedagogical treatment of the cosmological history in this class of models, emphasizing the simplest scenarios in which a dark matter candidate annihilates into hidden sector particles which then decay into visible matter through the vector, Higgs, or lepton portals. In each case, we find ample parameter space in which very heavy dark matter particles can provide an acceptable thermal relic abundance. We also discuss possible extensions of models featuring these dynamics.

    Baryons and Chiral Symmetry

    Keh-Fei Liu🇺🇸

The relevance of chiral symmetry in baryons is highlighted in three examples in the nucleon spectroscopy and structure. The first one is the importance of chiral dynamics in understanding the Roper resonance. The second one is the role of chiral symmetry in the lattice calculation of term and strangeness. The third one is the role of chiral anomaly in the anomalous Ward identity in evaluating the quark spin and the quark orbital angular momentum. Finally, the chiral effective theory for baryons is discussed.

The thermalization of soft modes in non-expanding isotropic quark gluon plasmas

    Jean-Paul Blaizot🇫🇷 · Jinfeng Liao🇺🇸 · Yacine Mehtar-Tani🇺🇸

We discuss the role of elastic and inelastic collisions and their interplay in the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma. We consider a simplified situation of a static plasma, spatially uniform and isotropic in momentum space. We focus on the small momentum region, which equilibrates first, and on a short time scale. We obtain a simple kinetic equation that allows for an analytic description of the most important regimes. The present analysis suggests that the formation of a Bose condensate, expected when only elastic collisions are present, is strongly hindered by the inelastic, radiative, processes.

Magnetic catalysis of a finite size pion condensate

    Alejandro Ayala🇲🇽 · Pedro Mercado🇲🇽 · C. Villavicencio🇨🇱

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation of a finite size pion gas subject to the influence of a magnetic field. We find the expressions for the critical chemical potential and temperature for the onset of condensation. We show that for values of the external magnetic flux larger than the elemental flux, the critical temperature is larger than the one obtained by considering only finite size effects. We use experimentally reported values of pion source sizes and multiplicities at LHC energies to show that if the magnetic flux, produced initially in peripheral heavy-ion collision, is at least partially preserved up to the hadronic phase, the combined finite size and magnetic field effects give rise to a critical temperature above the kinetic freeze-out temperature. We discuss the implications for the evolution of the pion system created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

On the four-loop strong coupling beta-function in the SM

    A.V. Bednyakov🇷🇺 · A.F. Pikelner🇩🇪

In the talk the leading four-loop contribution to the beta-function of the strong coupling in the SM is discussed. Some details of calculation techniques are provided. Special attention is paid to the ambiguity due to utilized treatment and a particular prescription with anticommuting is advocated. As a by-product of our computation the four-loop beta-function in QCD with "gluino" is also obtained.

Boosting the charged Higgs search prospects using jet substructure at the LHC

    Jinmian Li🇰🇷 · Riley Patrick🇦🇺 · Pankaj Sharma🇦🇺 · Anthony G. Williams🇦🇺

Charged Higgs bosons are predicted in variety of theoretically well-motivated new physics models with extended Higgs sectors. In this study, we focus on a type-II two Higgs doublet model (2HDM-II) and consider a heavy charged Higgs with its mass ranging from 500 GeV to 1 TeV as dictated by the constraints which render GeV. We study the dominant production mode associated production with being the dominant decay channel when the pseudoscalar is considerably lighter. For such a heavy charged Higgs, both the decay products and are relatively boosted. In such a scenario, we apply the jet substructure analysis of tagging the fat pseudoscalar and jets in order to eliminate the standard model background efficiently. We perform a detailed detector simulation for the signal and background processes at the 14 TeV LHC. We introduce various kinematical cuts to determine the signal significance for a number of benchmark points with charged Higgs boson mass from 500 GeV to 1 TeV in the decay channel. Finally we perform a multivariate analysis utilizing a boosted decision tree algorithm to optimize these significances.

vector meson resonances dynamics in heavy-ion collisions

    Andrej Ilner🇩🇪 · Daniel Cabrera🇪🇸 · Christina Markert🇺🇸 · Elena Bratkovskaya🇩🇪

We study the strange vector meson () dynamics in relativistic heavy-ion collisions based on the microscopic Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach which incorporates partonic and hadronic degrees-of-freedom, a phase transition from hadronic to partonic matter - Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) - and a dynamical hadronization of quarks and antiquarks as well as final hadronic interactions. We investigate the role of in-medium effects on the meson dynamics by employing Breit-Wigner spectral functions for the 's with self-energies obtained from a self-consistent coupled-channel G-matrix approach. Furthermore, we confront the PHSD calculations with experimental data for p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at energies up to ~GeV. Our analysis shows that at relativistic energies most of the final s (observed experimentally) are produced during the late hadronic phase, dominantly by the channel, such that the fraction of the s from the QGP is small and can hardly be reconstructed from the final observables. The influence of the in-medium effects on the dynamics at RHIC energies is rather modest due to their dominant production at low baryon densities (but high meson densities), however, it increases with decreasing beam energy. Moreover, we find that the additional cut on the invariant mass region of the further influences the shape and the height of the final spectra. This imposes severe constraints on the interpretation of the experimental results.

Complete Nonrelativistic-QCD Prediction for Prompt Double Hadroproduction

    Zhi-Guo He🇩🇪 · Bernd A. Kniehl🇩🇪

We perform a complete study of prompt double hadroproduction at leading order in the nonrelativistic-QCD factorization framework by including all possible pairings of the Fock states , , and with . We find that the and channels of and production and the and channels of production, which have been overlooked so far, greatly dominate at large invariant masses and rapidity separations of the pair, and that their inclusion nearly fills the large gap between previous incomplete predictions within the color-singlet model and the recent measurement by the CMS Collaboration at the CERN LHC, leaving room for next-to-leading-order corrections of typical size.

Gluon transverse momentum dependent correlators in polarized high energy processes

    Daniel Boer🇳🇱 · Sabrina Cotogno🇳🇱 · Tom van Daal🇳🇱 · Piet J. Mulders🇳🇱 · Andrea Signori🇳🇱 · Yajin Zhou🇨🇳

We investigate the gluon transverse momentum dependent correlators as Fourier transform of matrix elements of nonlocal operator combinations. At the operator level these correlators include both field strength operators and gauge links bridging the nonlocality. In contrast to the collinear PDFs, the gauge links are no longer unique for transverse momentum dependent PDFs (TMDs) and also Wilson loops lead to nontrivial effects. We look at gluon TMDs for unpolarized, vector and tensor polarized targets. In particular a single Wilson loop operators become important when one considers the small-x limit of gluon TMDs.

We provide an overview of the current experimental and theoretical situation with historical background and summarize our recent results, which explore the question of compatibility of experimental data with a reasonable convergence of a carefully defined chiral series in the framework of resummed chiral perturbation theory.

Higgs portal dark matter and neutrino mass and mixing with a doubly charged scalar

    I.M. Hierro🇮🇹 · S. F. King🇬🇧 · S. Rigolin🇮🇹

We consider an extension of the Standard Model involving two new scalar particles around the TeV scale: a singlet neutral scalar , to be eventually identified as the Dark Matter candidate, plus a doubly charged singlet scalar, , that can be the source for the non-vanishing neutrino masses and mixings. Assuming an unbroken symmetry in the scalar sector, under which only the additional neutral scalar is odd, we write the most general (renormalizable) scalar potential. The model may be regarded as a possible extension of the conventional Higgs portal Dark Matter scenario which also accounts for neutrino mass and mixing. This framework cannot completely explain the observed positron excess. However a softening of the discrepancy observed in conventional Higgs portal framework can be obtained, especially when the scale of new physics responsible for generating neutrino masses and lepton number violating processes is around 2 TeV.

Natural constraints on the gluon-quark vertex

    Daniele Binosi🇮🇹 · Lei Chang🇨🇳 · Joannis Papavassiliou🇪🇸 · Si-Xue Qin🇺🇸 · Craig D. Roberts🇺🇸

In principle, the strong-interaction sector of the Standard Model is characterised by a unique renormalisation-group-invariant (RGI) running interaction and a unique form for the dressed--gluon-quark vertex, ; but, whilst much has been learnt about the former, the latter is still obscure. In order to improve this situation, we use a RGI running-interaction that reconciles both top-down and bottom-up analyses of the gauge sector in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to compute dressed-quark gap equation solutions with 1,660,000 distinct Ansaetze for . Each one of the solutions is then tested for compatibility with three physical criteria and, remarkably, we find that merely 0.55% of the solutions survive the test. Plainly, therefore, even a small selection of observables places extremely tight bounds on the domain of realistic vertex Ansaetze. This analysis and its results should prove useful in constraining insightful contemporary studies of QCD and hadronic phenomena.

Testing of coalescence mechanism in high energy heavy ion collisions using two-particle correlations with identified particle trigger

    Subikash Choudhury🇮🇳 · Debojit Sarkar🇮🇳 · Subhasis Chattopadhyay🇮🇳

In central Au-Au collisions at top RHIC energy, two particle correlation measurements with identified hadron trigger have shown attenuation of near side proton triggered jet-like yield at intermediate transverse momentum (), 2 6 GeV/. The attenuation has been attributed to the anomalous baryon enhancement observed in the single inclusive measurements at the same range. The enhancement has been found to be in agreement with the models invoking coalescence of quarks as a mechanism of hadronization. Baryon enhancement has also been observed at LHC in the single inclusive spectra. We study the consequence of such an enhancement on two particle correlations at LHC energy within the framework of A Multi Phase Transport (AMPT) model that implements quark coalescence as a mode of hadronization. In this paper we have calculated the proton over pion ratio and the near side per trigger yield associated to pion and proton triggers at intermediate from String Melting (SM) version of AMPT. Results obtained are contrasted with the AMPT Default (Def.) which does not include coalescence. Baryon enhancement has been observed in AMPT SM at intermediate . Near side jet-like correlated yield associated to baryon (proton) trigger in the momentum region where baryon generation is enhanced is found to be suppressed as compared to the corresponding yields for the meson (pion) trigger in most central Pb-Pb events. No such effect has been found in the Default version of AMPT.

Degeneracy breakdown as a source of supernovae Ia

    L. Clavelli🇺🇸

We pursue the investigation of a model for sub-Chandrasekhar supernovae Ia explosions (SNIa) in which the energy stored in the Pauli tower is released to trigger a nuclear deflagration. The simplest physical model for such a degeneracy breakdown is a phase transition to an exactly supersymmetric state in which the scalar partners of protons, neutrons, and leptons become degenerate with the familiar fermions of our world as in the supersymmetric standard model with susy breaking parameters relaxed to zero. We focus on the ability of the susy phase transition model to fit the total SNIa rate as well as the delay time distribution of SNIa after the birth of a progenitor white dwarf. We also study the ejected mass distribution and its correlation with delay time. Finally, we discuss the expected SNIa remnant in the form of a black hole of Jupiter mass or lower and the prospects for detecting such remnants.

Do nuclear collisions create a locally equilibrated quark-gluon plasma?

    Paul Romatschke🇺🇸

Experimental results on azimuthal correlations in high energy nuclear collisions (nucleus-nucleus, proton-nucleus and proton-proton) seem to be well described by viscous hydrodynamics. It is often argued that this agreement implies either local thermal equilibrium or at least local isotropy. In this note, I present arguments why this is not the case. Neither local near-equilibrium nor near-isotropy are required in order for hydrodynamics to offer a successful and accurate description of experimental results. However, I predict the breakdown of hydrodynamics at momenta of order seven times the temperature, corresponding to a smallest possible QCD liquid drop size of 0.15 fm.

Quantum Cosmology and the Evolution of Inflationary Spectra

    Alexander Y. Kamenshchik🇮🇹 · Alessandro Tronconi🇮🇹 · Giovanni Venturi🇮🇹

We illustrate how it is possible to calculate the quantum gravitational effects on the spectra of primordial scalar/tensor perturbations starting from the canonical, Wheeler-De Witt, approach to quantum cosmology. The composite matter-gravity system is analysed through a Born-Oppenheimer approach in which gravitation is associated with the heavy degrees of freedom and matter (here represented by a scalar field) with the light ones. Once the independent degrees of freedom are identified the system is canonically quantised. The differential equation governing the dynamics of the primordial spectra with its quantum-gravitational corrections is then obtained and is applied to diverse inflationary evolutions. Finally, the analytical results are compared to observations through a Monte Carlo Markov Chain technique and an estimate of the free parameters of our approach is finally presented and the results obtained are compared with previous ones.
