Real time evolution and a traveling excitation in SU(2) pure gauge theory on a quantum computer

    Sarmed A Rahman🇨🇦 · Randy Lewis🇨🇦 · Emanuele Mendicelli🇨🇦 · Sarah Powell🇨🇦

The Hamiltonian approach can be used successfully to study the real-time evolution of a non-Abelian lattice gauge theory on the available noisy quantum computers. In this work, results from the real-time evolution of SU(2) pure gauge theory on IBM hardware are presented. The long real-time evolution spanning dozens of Trotter steps with hundreds of CNOT gates and the observation of a traveling excitation on the lattice were made possible by using a collection of error mitigation techniques. Self-mitigation is our novel tool, which consists of using the same physics circuit as a noise-mitigation circuit.

Analytic continuation and physical content of the gluon propagator

    Fabio Siringo🇮🇹 · Giorgio Comitini🇮🇹

The analytic continuation of the gluon propagator is revised in the light of recent findings on the possible existence of complex conjugated poles. The contribution of the anomalous pole must be added when Wick rotating, leading to an effective Minkowskian propagator which is not given by the trivial analytic continuation of the Euclidean function. The effective propagator has an integral representation in terms of a spectral function which is naturally related to a set of elementary (complex) eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian, thus generalizing the usual Källen-Lehmann description. A simple toy model shows how the elementary eigenvalues might be related to actual physical quasiparticles of the non-perturbative vacuum.

Entanglement bipartitioning and tree tensor networks

    Kouichi Okunishi🇯🇵 · Hiroshi Ueda🇯🇵 · Tomotoshi Nishino🇯🇵

We propose the entanglement bipartitioning approach to design an optimal network structure of the tree-tensor-network (TTN) for quantum many-body systems. Given an exact ground-state wavefunction, we perform sequential bipartitioning of spin-cluster nodes so as to minimize the mutual information or the maximum loss of the entanglement entropy associated with the branch to be bipartitioned. We demonstrate that entanglement bipartitioning of up to 16 sites gives rise to nontrivial tree network structures for Heisenberg models in one and two dimensions. The resulting TTNs enable us to obtain better variational energies, compared with standard TTNs such as uniform matrix product state and perfect-binary-tree tensor network.

Chiral extrapolation of hadronic vacuum polarization and isospin-breaking corrections

    Martin Hoferichter🇨🇭 · Gilberto Colangelo🇨🇭 · Bai-Long Hoid🇨🇭 · Bastian Kubis🇩🇪 · Jacobo Ruiz de Elvira🇪🇸 · Dominik Stamen🇩🇪 · Peter Stoffer🇨🇭

By far the biggest contribution to hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) arises from the two-pion channel. Its quark-mass dependence can be evaluated by combining dispersion relations with chiral perturbation theory, providing guidance on the functional form of chiral extrapolations, or even interpolations around the physical point. In addition, the approach allows one to estimate in a controlled way the isospin-breaking (IB) corrections that arise from the pion mass difference. As an application, we present an updated estimate of phenomenological expectations for electromagnetic and strong IB corrections to the HVP contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. In particular, we include IB effects in the channel, which are enhanced due to the proximity of the threshold and the resonance. The resulting estimates make it unlikely that the current tension between lattice-QCD and data-driven evaluations of the HVP contribution is caused by IB corrections.

Minimal Entanglement and Emergent Symmetries in Low-energy QCD

    Qiaofeng Liu🇺🇸 · Ian Low🇺🇸 · Thomas Mehen🇺🇸

We study low-energy scattering of spin-1/2 baryons from the perspective of quantum information science, focusing on the correlation between entanglement minimization and the appearance of accidental symmetries. The baryon transforms as an octet under the SU(3) flavor symmetry and its interactions below the pion threshold are described by contact operators in an effective field theory (EFT) of QCD. Despite there being 64 channels in the 2-to-2 scattering, only six independent operators in the EFT are predicted by SU(3). We show that successive entanglement minimization in SU(3)-symmetric channels are correlated with increasingly large emergent symmetries in the EFT. In particular, we identify scattering channels whose entanglement suppression are indicative of emergent SU(6), SO(8), SU(8), and SU(16) symmetries. We also observe the appearance of non-relativistic conformal invariance in channels with unnaturally large scattering lengths. Improved precision from lattice simulations could help determine the degree of entanglement suppression, and consequently the amount of accidental symmetry, in low-energy QCD.
