    Z(3)-symmetric effective theory of hot QCD

    We study a three dimensional Z(3)-symmetric effective theory of high temperature QCD. The exact lattice-continuum relations, needed in order to perform lattice simulations with physical parameters, are computed to order O(a^0) in lattice perturbation theory. Lattice simulations are performed to determine the phase structure of a subset of the parameter space.

    Numerical study of the mass spectrum in the 2D O(3) sigma model with a theta term

    It has been conjectured that the mass spectrum of the O(3) non-linear sigma model with a theta term in 2 dimensions may possess an excited state, which decays when theta is lowered from pi below a critical value. Since the direct numerical investigation of the model is prevented by a sign problem, we try to infer some information on the mass spectrum at real theta by studying the model at imaginary theta via analytic continuation. A modified Swendsen-Wang cluster algorithm has been introduced to simulate the model with the theta term.

    The three-loop beta-function of SU(N) lattice gauge theories with overlap fermions

    We briefly report our calculation of the 2-loop coefficient of the coupling constant renormalization function Z_g in lattice perturbation theory. The quantity under study is defined through g_0 = Z_g g, where g_0 (g) is the bare (renormalized) coupling constant. The 2-loop expression for Z_g can be directly related to the 3-loop bare beta-function beta_L(g_0). Our calculation is performed using overlap fermions and Wilson gluons, and the background field technique has been chosen for convenience. Our results depend explicitly on the number of fermion flavors (N_f) and colors (N). Since the dependence of Z_g on the overlap parameter rho cannot be extracted analytically, we tabulate our results for different values of rho in the allowed range (0<rho<2), focusing on values which are being used most frequently in simulations. Plots of the 1- and 2-loop results for Z_g versus rho exhibit a nontrivial dependence on the overlap parameter. A longer write-up of this work may be found in 0709.4368.

    Extraction of alpha_s and m_Q from Onia

    We briefly review how precise determinations of the strong coupling constant and of the heavy quark masses may be obtained from heavy quarkonium. Such determinations are competitive with heavy quark masses extraction from other systems and give an accurate value for the strong coupling constant at a relatively low energy scale. In particular we report about a recent determination of from with CLEO data which includes color octet contributions and avoids model dependence in the extraction. The obtained value is , which corresponds to . Future prospects for more precise extractions of the heavy quark masses and are discussed.

    Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. V. Further Results for the Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial

    We derive some new structural results for the transfer matrix of square-lattice Potts models with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. In particular, we obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the dominant (at large |q|) diagonal entry in the transfer matrix, for arbitrary widths m, as the solution of a special one-dimensional polymer model. We also obtain the large-q expansion of the bulk and surface (resp. corner) free energies for the zero-temperature antiferromagnet (= chromatic polynomial) through order q^{-47} (resp. q^{-46}). Finally, we compute chromatic roots for strips of widths 9 <= m <= 12 with free boundary conditions and locate roughly the limiting curves.
