A new lattice gauge action without scaling artifacts

    John P. Costella🇦🇺

I describe a new way of constructing a gauge action that eliminates scaling artifacts, by writing the continuum formalism in terms of "gauge links" (Schwinger line integrals) and using the optimal SLAC representation of the lattice derivative. Computational performance can be maintained by implementing the action as a "stochastic" operator, as has been recently implemented in the MILC code for the optimal D-slash operator and the antialiasing filter.

Effective field theories for heavy quarkonium

    Nora Brambilla🇮🇹 · Antonio Pineda🇪🇸 · Joan Soto🇪🇸 · Antonio Vairo🇮🇹

We review recent theoretical developments in heavy quarkonium physics from the point of view of Effective Field Theories of QCD. We discuss Non-Relativistic QCD and concentrate on potential Non-Relativistic QCD. Our main goal will be to derive QCD Schrödinger-like equations that govern the heavy quarkonium physics in the weak and strong coupling regime. We also discuss a selected set of applications, which include spectroscopy, inclusive decays and electromagnetic threshold production.

    Higgs picture of the QCD-vacuum

    C.Wetterich🇩🇪

The functional integral for QCD is reformulated by introducing explicitly an integration over the fluctuations of composite quark-antiquark bound states. Chiral symmetry breaking by the color singlet scalar field induces masses for the fermions. Our formulation with scalar fluctuations may be useful for lattice gauge theories by modifying the spectrum of the Dirac operator in the vacuum and permitting a simple connection to chiral perturbation theory. We propose that a ``condensate'' of quark-antiquark bound states in the color octet channel generates masses of the gluons by the Higgs mechanism. A simple effective action for quarks, gluons and (composite) scalars yields a surprisingly good description of the charges, masses and interactions of all low mass physical excitations - baryons, pseudoscalars and vector mesons. Dressed quarks appear as baryons and dressed gluons as vector mesons.
