    Confinement and the photon propagator in 3D compact QED: a lattice study in Landau gauge at zero and finite temperature

    On the lattice we study the gauge boson propagator of three dimensional compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and non-zero temperature. The non-perturbative effects are taken into account by the generation of a mass, by an anomalous dimension and by the photon wave function renormalization. All these effects can be attributed to the monopoles: they are absent in the propagator of the singularity-free part of the gauge field. We assess carefully the Gribov copy problem for the propagator and the parameters emerging from the fits.

    New methods to measure phase transition strength

    A recently developed technique to determine the order and strength of phase transitions by extracting the density of partition function zeroes (a continuous function) from finite-size systems (a discrete data set) is generalized to systems for which (i) some or all of the zeroes occur in degenerate sets and/or (ii) they are not confined to a singular line in the complex plane. The technique is demonstrated by application to the case of free Wilson fermions.

    Scalar mesons in QCD and tests of the gluon content of the sigma

    We summarize the different features of the scalar mesons from QCD spectral sum rule analyses of the two- and three-point functions. The results do not favour the u-bar u + d-bar d interpretation of the broad and low mass sigma (0.6), and the u-bar s resonance nature of the eventually observed kappa(0.9) meson. We also discuss some OZI-violating and classic semileptonic and radiative decay processes which can reveal in a model-independent way the eventual gluon component sigma_B of the sigma. In a meson-gluonium mixing scenario, one also expects an observation of the K K-bar final states from the sigma_B which may compete (if phase space allowed) with the one from a low mass s-bar s state assumed in the literature to be the SU(3) partner of the if this latter is a u-bar u + d-bar d state
