Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength. Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure of the ISGMR in the prolate Mg and oblate Si nuclei and identify among a variety of energy density functionals based on Skyrme parameterisations the one which best describes the experimental data. This will allow for conclusions regarding the nuclear incompressibility. Because of the strong IS0/IS2 coupling, the deformation splitting of the ISGQR will also be analysed. Methods: The ISGMR was excited in Mg and Si using -particle inelastic scattering measurements acquired with an MeV beam at scattering angles and . The K magnetic spectrometer at iThemba LABS was used to detect and momentum analyse the inelastically scattered particles. An experimental energy resolution of keV (FWHM) was attained, revealing fine structure in the excitation-energy region of the ISGMR. The IS0 strength distributions in the nuclei studied were obtained with the Difference-of-Spectrum (DoS) technique. The theoretical comparison is based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) with a representative set of Skyrme forces.

Crustal properties of a neutron star within an effective relativistic mean-field model

    Vishal Parmar · H. C. Das · Ankit Kumar · M. K. Sharma · S. K. Patra

We use the effective relativistic mean-field (E-RMF) model to study the crustal properties of the neutron star. The unified equations of state (EoS) are constructed using recently developed E-RMF parameter sets, such as FSUGarnet, IOPB-I, and G3. The outer crust composition is determined using the atomic mass evaluation 2020 data [Chinese Physics C {\bf 45}, 030002 (2021)] along with the available Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov mass models [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 88}, 024308 (2013)] for neutron-rich nuclei. The structure of the inner crust is estimated by performing the compressible liquid drop model calculations using the same E-RMF functional as that for the uniform nuclear matter in the liquid core. Various neutron star properties such as mass-radius () relation, the moment of inertia (), the fractional crustal moment of inertia (), mass ( and thickness () of the crust are calculated with three unified EoSs. The crustal properties are found to be sensitive to the density-dependent symmetry energy and slope parameter advocating the importance of the unified treatment of neutron star EoS. The three unified EoSs, IOPB-I-U, FSUGarnet-U, and G3-U, reproduced the observational data obtained with different pulsars, NICER, and glitch activity and are found suitable for further description of the structure of the neutron star.

Model study of the energy dependence of the correlation between anisotropic flow and the mean transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions

    Niseem Magdy🇺🇸 · Petr Parfenov🇷🇺 · Arkadiy Taranenko🇷🇺 · Iurii Karpenko🇨🇿 · Roy A. Lacey🇺🇸

A hybrid model that employs the hadron-string transport model UrQMD and the (3+1)D relativistic viscous hydrodynamic code vHLLE, is used to investigate the beam energy dependence of the correlation coefficient between the average transverse momentum of hadrons emitted in an event and the square of the anisotropic flow coefficient . For Au+Au collisions, the model predicts characteristic patterns for the energy and event-shape dependence of the variances for and ( and ), and the covariance of and (), consistent with the attenuation effects of the specific shear viscosity . In contrast, is predicted to be insensitive to the beam energy but sensitive to the initial-state geometry of the collisions. These observations suggest that a precise set of measurements for , , and as a function of beam-energy and event-shape, could aid precision extraction of the temperature and baryon chemical-potential dependence of from the wealth of Au+Au data obtained in the RHIC beam energy scan.

knockout reaction as a new probe for formation in -decay nuclei

    Kazuki Yoshida · Junki Tanaka

The -decay phenomennon has been studied for more than a century but the mechanism of the particle formation and its tunneling process have not yet been fully understood. As an alternative to the -decay lifetime measurement, we propose the proton-induced knockout reaction, (,), as a new probe for the surface formation probability of -decay nuclei. The Po(,)Pb reaction is described by the distorted-wave impulse approximation framework. It shows that the Po/Po ratio of the knockout cross sections agrees with that of the surface formation probabilities determined by lifetime measurements. The result implies that the (,) cross section is a direct probe for the surface formation probability, which is an essential quantity to lead us to a complete understanding of the -decay phenomenon.

Nuclear medium effects in the deep inelastic scattering at DUNE energies

    F. Zaidi🇮🇳 · V. Ansari🇮🇳 · M. Sajjad Athar🇮🇳 · H. Haider🇮🇳 · I. Ruis Simo🇪🇸 · S. K. Singh🇮🇳

The nuclear medium effects are studied in the interactions from nuclei in the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) region and applied to the nucleus to obtain the scattering cross sections in the energy region of the proposed DUNE experiment. The free nucleon structure functions () have been calculated at the next-to-leading order (NLO) using Martin-Motylinski-Harland Lang-Thorne 2014 as well as The Coordinated Theoretical-Experimental Project on QCD parameterizations for parton distribution functions (PDFs) and including the effect of perturbative and nonperturbative QCD corrections \cite{Ansari:2020xne}. These free nucleon structure functions are then convoluted with the nucleon spectral function in the nucleus to obtain the nuclear structure functions (). The nucleon spectral function takes into account the Fermi motion and the binding energy of the nucleons as well as the nucleon correlations within the nucleus. These nuclear structure functions are then used to calculate the deep inelastic scattering cross sections. Moreover, the contribution of and mesons as well as the corrections due to the shadowing and antishadowing effects in the relevant kinematic region of the Bjorken variable are also included. The numerical results for the cross sections have been presented and compared with the results obtained in the phenomenological approach using nuclear structure functions from nCTEQnu.

Microscopic study of higher-order deformation effects on the ground states of superheavy nuclei around Hs

    Xiao-Qian Wang · Xiang-Xiang Sun · Shan-Gui Zhou

We study the effects of higher-order deformations ( and ) on the ground state properties of superheavy nuclei (SHN) near the doubly magic deformed nucleus Hs by using the multidimensionally-constrained (MDC) relativistic mean-field (RMF) model with five effective interactions PC-PK1, PK1, NL3, DD-ME2, and PKDD. The doubly magic properties of Hs are featured by the large energy gaps at and in the single-particle spectra. By investigating the binding energies and single-particle levels of Hs in multidimensional deformation space, we find that the deformation has the greatest impact on the binding energy among these higher-order deformations and influences the shell gaps considerably. Similar conclusions hold for other SHN near Hs. Our calculations demonstrate that the deformation must be considered when studying SHN by using MDC-RMF.

We compare the microscopic transport models UrQMD, PHSD, PHQMD, and SMASH to make predictions for the upcoming Ag+Ag data at ~GeV (~GeV) by the HADES collaboration. We study multiplicities, spectra and effective source temperatures of protons, , , the , and the within these models. Despite variations in the detailed implementation of the dynamics in the different models, the employed transport approaches all show consistent multiplicities of the bulk of investigated hadrons. The main differences are in the production, which is treated differently between UrQMD/SMASH on one side employing high mass resonance states with explicit decays to in contrast to PHSD/PHQMD which account only non-resonant production channels. A comparison of the spectra, summarized by effective source temperatures, shows that all models provide similar source temperatures around ~MeV, and show substantial radial flow on the order of even for such a small system.

Accurate relativistic chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to NNLO

    Jun-Xu Lu🇨🇳 · Chun-Xuan Wang🇨🇳 · Yang Xiao🇨🇳 · Li-Sheng Geng🇨🇳 · Jie Meng🇨🇳 · Peter Ring🇩🇪

We construct a relativistic chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the next-to-next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We show that a good description of the phase shifts up to MeV and even higher can be achieved with a less than 1. Both the next-to-leading order results and the next-to-next-to-leading order results describe the phase shifts equally well up to MeV, but for higher energies, the latter behaves better, showing satisfactory convergence. The relativistic chiral potential provides the most essential inputs for relativistic ab initio studies of nuclear structure and reactions, which has been in need for almost two decades.

Three-body renormalization group limit cycles based on unsupervised feature learning

    Bastian Kaspschak · Ulf-G. Meißner

Both the three-body system and the inverse square potential carry a special significance in the study of renormalization group limit cycles. In this work, we pursue an exploratory approach and address the question which two-body interactions lead to limit cycles in the three-body system at low energies, without imposing any restrictions upon the scattering length. For this, we train a boosted ensemble of variational autoencoders, that not only provide a severe dimensionality reduction, but also allow to generate further synthetic potentials, which is an important prerequisite in order to efficiently search for limit cycles in low-dimensional latent space. We do so by applying an elitist genetic algorithm to a population of synthetic potentials that minimizes a specially defined limit-cycle-loss. The resulting fittest individuals suggest that the inverse square potential is the only two-body potential that minimizes this limit cycle loss independent of the hyperangle.

From neutron skins and neutron matter to the neutron star crust

William G. Newton · Rebecca Preston · Lauren Balliet · Michael Ross

We present the first Bayesian inference of neutron star crust properties to incorporate neutron skin data, including the recent PREX measurement of the neutron skin of Pb, combined with recent chiral effective field theory predictions of pure neutron matter with statistical errors. Using a compressible liquid drop model with an extended Skyrme energy-density functional, we obtain the most stringent constraints to date on the transition pressure MeV fm and chemical potential MeV (which control the mass, moment of inertia and thickness of a neutron star crust), the proton fractions that bracket the pasta phases and , as well as the relative mass and moment of inertia and thickness of the layers of non-spherical nuclei (nuclear pasta) in the crust.

Near Threshold Heavy Quarkonium Photoproduction at Large Momentum Transfer

    Peng Sun🇨🇳 · Xuan-Bo Tong🇨🇳 · Feng Yuan🇺🇸

Perturbative QCD is applied to investigate the near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction at large momentum transfer. We take into account the contributions from the leading three-quark Fock states of the nucleon. The dominant contribution comes from the three-quark Fock state with one unit quark orbital angular momentum (OAM) whereas that from zero quark OAM is suppressed at the threshold. From our analysis, we also show that there is no direct connection between the near threshold heavy quarkonium photoproduction and the gluonic gravitational form factors of the nucleon. Based on the comparison between our result and recent GlueX data of photoproduction, we make predictions for and (1S,2S) states which can be tested in future experiments.

Light-front wavefunctions of mesons by design

    Meijian Li🇫🇮 · Yang Li🇨🇳 · Guangyao Chen · Tuomas Lappi🇫🇮 · James P. Vary🇺🇸

We develop a mechanism to build the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) of meson bound states on a small-sized basis function representation. Unlike in a standard Hamiltonian formalism, the Hamiltonian in this method is implicit, and the information of the system is carried directly by the functional form and adjustable parameters of the LFWFs. In this work, we model the LFWFs for four charmonium states, , , , and as superpositions of orthonormal basis functions. We choose the basis functions as eigenfunctions of an effective Hamiltonian, which has a longitudinal confining potential in addition to the transverse confining potential from light-front holographic QCD. We determine the basis function parameters and superposition coefficients by employing both guidance from the nonrelativistic description of the meson states and the experimental measurements of the meson decay widths. With the obtained wavefunctions, we study the features of those meson states, including charge radii and parton distribution functions. We use the LFWF to calculate the meson production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, and the LFWF to calculate its diphoton transition form factor. Both results show good agreement with experiments. The obtained LFWFs have simple-functional forms and can be readily used to predict additional experimental observables.

Dragging heavy quark in an anisotropic QCD medium beyond the static limit

    Avdhesh Kumar🇮🇳 · Manu Kurian🇮🇳 · Santosh K. Das🇮🇳 · Vinod Chandra🇮🇳

Heavy quark dynamics in an anisotropic QCD medium have been analyzed within the Fokker-Planck approach. Heavy quark drag force and momentum diffusion tensor have been decomposed by employing a general tensor basis for an anisotropic medium. Depending upon the relative orientation of the direction of the momentum anisotropy of the medium and heavy quark motion, two drag and four diffusion coefficients have been estimated in the anisotropic QCD medium. The relative significance of different components of drag and momentum diffusion coefficients has been explored. The dependence of the angle between the anisotropic vector and heavy quark motion to the drag and diffusion coefficients has also been studied. Further, the energy loss of heavy quarks due to the elastic collisional process in an anisotropic medium has been studied. It is seen that the anisotropic contributions to heavy quark transport coefficients and its collisional energy loss have a strong dependence on the direction and strength of momentum anisotropy in the QCD medium.

Systematic study of {\Delta}(1232) resonance excitations using single isobaric charge-exchange reactions induced by medium-mass projectiles of Sn

The fragment separator FRS has been for the first time used to measure the (n,p) and (p,n)-type isobaric charge-exchange cross sections of stable 112,124Sn isotopes accelerated at 1A GeV with an uncertainty of 3% and to separate quasi-elastic and inelastic components in the missing-energy spectra of the ejectiles. The inelastic contribution can be associated to the excitation of isobar {\Delta}(1232) resonances and to the pion emission in s-wave, both in the target and projectile nuclei, while the quasi-elastic contribution is associated to the nuclear spin-isospin response of nucleon-hole excitations. The data lead to interesting results where we observe a clear quenching of the quasi-elastic component and their comparisons to theoretical calculations demonstrate that the baryonic resonances can be excited in the target and projectile nuclei. To go further in this investigation, we propose to study the excitation of baryonic resonances taking advantage of the combination of high-resolving power magnetic spectrometers with the WASA calorimeter. These new measurements will allow us to determine the momenta of the ejectiles and pions emitted in coincidence after the single isobaric charge-exchange collisions, providing us unique opportunities to study the evolution of the baryonic resonance dynamics with the neutron-proton asymmetry through the use of exotic radioactive ion beams.

QCD Static Force in Gradient Flow

    Nora Brambilla🇩🇪 · Hee Sok Chung🇩🇪 · Antonio Vairo🇩🇪 · Xiang-Peng Wang🇩🇪

We compute the QCD static force and potential using gradient flow at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling. The static force is the spatial derivative of the static potential: it encodes the QCD interaction at both short and long distances. While on the one side the static force has the advantage of being free of the renormalon affecting the static potential when computed in perturbation theory, on the other side its direct lattice QCD computation suffers from poor convergence. The convergence can be improved by using gradient flow, where the gauge fields in the operator definition of a given quantity are replaced by flowed fields at flow time , which effectively smear the gauge fields over a distance of order , while they reduce to the QCD fields in the limit . Based on our next-to-leading order calculation, we explore the properties of the static force for arbitrary values of , as well as in the limit, which may be useful for lattice QCD studies.

    NICER view on holographic QCD

    Niko Jokela🇫🇮

The holographic models for dense QCD matter work surprisingly well. A general implication seems that the deconfinement phase transition dictates the maximum mass of neutron stars. The nuclear matter phase turns out to be rather stiff which, if continuously merged with nuclear matter models based on effective field theories, leads to the conclusion that neutron stars do not have quark matter cores in the light of all current astrophysical data. We comment that as the perturbative QCD results are in stark contrast with strong coupling results, any future simulations of neutron star mergers incorporating corrections beyond ideal fluid should proceed cautiously. For this purpose, we provide a model which treats nuclear and quark matter phases in a unified framework at strong coupling.
