Illustrations of loosely-bound and resonant states in atomic nuclei

    A. C. Dassie · F. Gerdau · F. J. Gonzalez · M. Moyano · R. M. Id Betan

Using the one-dimensional potential well with realistic parameters for atomic nuclei, we illustrate the movement of the poles of the S-matrix, and the transmission coefficient when the well supports an anti-bound state. We calculate the phase shift of the atomic nuclei 5He using the three-dimensional potential well, and compare it with the experimental one. The paper gives a glance of some of the properties found in realistic loosely and resonant nuclear systems, using equations at the level of undergraduate students.

Flow decorrelation in heavy-ion collisions at =27 and 200 GeV with 3D event-by-event viscous hydrodynamics

    Jakub Cimerman🇨🇿 · Iurii Karpenko🇨🇿 · Boris Tomasik🇨🇿 · Barbara Antonina Trzeciak🇨🇿

We present the first calculation of longitudinal decorrelation of anisotropic flow at RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) energies using event-by-event viscous hydrodynamic model (vHLLE), with two different initial states (GLISSANDO2 and UrQMD) and hadronic cascade. We investigate the origin of the observed decorrelation by checking separately flow angle and flow magnitude decorrelation and by calculating decorrelation in the initial state eccentricity.

Large and massive neutron stars: Implications for the sound speed in dense QCD

    Christian Drischler🇺🇸 · Sophia Han🇺🇸 · Sanjay Reddy🇺🇸

The NASA telescope NICER has recently measured x-ray emissions from the heaviest of the precisely known two-solar mass neutron stars, PSR J0740+6620. Analysis of the data [Miller et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 918, L28 (2021); Riley et al., Astrophys. J. Lett. 918, L27 (2021)] suggests that PSR J0740+6620 has a radius in the range of km at the credibility level. In this article, we study the implications of this analysis for the sound speed in the high-density inner cores by using recent chiral effective field theory (EFT) calculations of the equation of state at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order to describe outer regions of the star at modest density. We find that the lower bound on the maximum speed of sound in the inner core, , increases rapidly with the radius of massive neutron stars. If EFT remains an efficient expansion for nuclear interactions up to about twice the nuclear saturation density, km requires and at the and credibility level, respectively.

Systematic study on proton radioactivity of spherical proton emitters within two--potential approach

    Jiu-Long Chen · Xiao-Hua Li · Xi-Jun Wu · Peng-Cheng Chu · Biao He

In the present work we systematically study the half--lives of proton radioactivity for spherical proton emitters with based on two--potential approach. While the nuclear potential of the emitted proton--daughter nucleus is adopted by a parameterized cosh type, the parameters of the depth and diffuseness for nuclear potential are determined by fitting experimental data of 32 spherical proton emitters. In order to reduce the deviations between experimental half-lives and calculated ones, we propose a simple analytic expression for formation probability of proton radioactivity with the same orbital angular momentum . The results indicate that the formation probability can be simply described by a formula of . Moreover, the linear relationship between the formation probability and the fragmentation potential also exists. The calculated half-lives can well reproduce the experimental data.

Nucleon-nucleon interaction in chiral EFT with a finite cutoff: explicit perturbative renormalization at next-to-leading order

    A. M. Gasparyan🇩🇪 · E. Epelbaum🇩🇪

We present a study of two-nucleon scattering in chiral effective field theory with a finite cutoff to next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. In the proposed scheme, the contributions of the lowest-order interaction to the scattering amplitude are summed up to an arbitrary order, while the corrections beyond leading order are iterated only once. We consider a general form of the regulator for the leading-order potential including local and non-local structures. The main objective of the paper is to address formal aspects of renormalizability within the considered scheme. In particular, we provide a rigorous proof, valid to all orders in the iterations of the leading-order potential, that power-counting breaking terms originating from the integration regions with momenta of the order of the cutoff can be absorbed into the renormalization of the low energy constants of the leading contact interactions. We also demonstrate that the cutoff dependence of the scattering amplitude can be reduced by perturbatively subtracting the regulator artifacts at next-to-leading order. The obtained numerical results for phase shifts in - and higher partial waves confirm the applicability of our scheme for nucleon-nucleon scattering.

Disentangling Jet Modification in Jet Simulations and in Z+Jet Data

    Jasmine Brewer🇨🇭 · Quinn Brodsky🇺🇸 · Krishna Rajagopal🇺🇸

We study the impact of selection biases on jet structure and substructure observables and separate these effects from effects caused by jet quenching. We use the angular separation of the hardest splitting in a jet as the primary example observable. We first conduct a simplified Monte Carlo study in which it is possible to identify the same jet after quenching in a heavy ion collision and as it would have been if it had formed in vacuum. We select a sample of jets by placing a cut on their quenched and, as is possible only in a Monte Carlo study, compare to the same jets unquenched, and see that the distribution seems to be unmodified. However, if we select a sample of jets formed in vacuum by placing a cut on their unquenched and compare to those same jets after quenching, we see a significant enhancement in the number of jets with large , primarily due to the soft particles in the jet that originate from the wake in the droplet of quark-gluon plasma excited by the parton shower. We confirm that the jets contributing to this enhancement are those jets which lost the most energy, which were not included in the sample selected after quenching; jets selected after quenching are those which lose a small fraction of their energy. Next, we employ a method that is available to experimentalists: in a sample of jets with a recoiling boson, we show that selecting jets based on the jet after quenching yields a distribution that appears unmodified while selecting a sample of jets produced in association with a boson whose (unmodified) is above some cut yields a significant enhancement in the number of jets with large . We again confirm that this is due to particles from the wake, and that the jets contributing to this enhancement are those which have lost a significant fraction of their energy.

Electromagnetic form factors of baryons in nuclear medium

    G. Ramalho🇧🇷 · K. Tsushima🇧🇷 · J.P.B.C. de Melo🇧🇷

The electromagnetic structure of the baryons is modified in the nuclear medium. The modifications can be inferred from the comparison between the electromagnetic form factors in medium with the respective form factor in vacuum. Of particular interest is the ratio between the electric and magnetic form factors in medium () and vacuum () of the octet baryon. The deviation of the double ratios ( from unity measures the impact of the medium modification of the electromagnetic structure in a nuclear medium. Measurements of the double ratios for different nuclear densities may become available in a near future using the polarization-transfer method developed at Jefferson Lab. We present estimates of the double ratios of octet baryons based on a covariant constituent quark model, which takes into account pion cloud excitations of the baryon cores, for different nuclear densities. Our results manifest different features, namely, enhancement or quenching depending on the baryon flavor content.

Regularisation in Nonperturbative Extensions of Effective Field Theory

    Curtis D. Abell🇦🇺 · Derek B. Leinweber🇦🇺 · Anthony W. Thomas🇦🇺 · Jia-Jun Wu🇨🇳

The process of renormalisation in nonperturbative Hamiltonian Effective Field Theory (HEFT) is examined in the -resonance scattering channel. As an extension of effective field theory incorporating the Lüscher formalism, HEFT provides a bridge between the infinite-volume scattering data of experiment and the finite-volume spectrum of energy eigenstates in lattice QCD. HEFT also provides phenomenological insight into the basis-state composition of the finite-volume eigenstates via the state eigenvectors. The Hamiltonian matrix is made finite through the introduction of finite-range regularisation. The extent to which the established features of this regularisation scheme survive in HEFT is examined. In a single-channel analysis, fits to experimental phase shifts withstand large variations in the regularisation parameter, , providing an opportunity to explore the sensitivity of the finite-volume spectrum and state composition on the regulator. While the Lüscher formalism ensures the eigenvalues are insensitive to variation in the single-channel case, the eigenstate composition varies with ; the admission of short distance interactions diminishes single-particle contributions to the states. In the two-channel , analysis, is restricted to a small range by the experimental data. Here the inelasticity is particularly sensitive to variations in and its associated parameter set. This sensitivity is also manifest in the finite-volume spectrum for states near the opening of the scattering channel. Finally, HEFT has the unique ability to describe the quark-mass dependence of the finite-volume eigenstates. The robust nature of this capability is presented and used to confront current state-of-the-art lattice QCD calculations.

Incomplete electromagnetic response of hot QCD matter

    Zeyan Wang🇨🇳 · Jiaxing Zhao🇨🇳 · Carsten Greiner🇩🇪 · Zhe Xu🇨🇳 · Pengfei Zhuang🇨🇳

The electromagnetic response of hot QCD matter to decaying external magnetic fields is investigated. We examine the validity of Ohm's law and find that the induced electric current increases from zero and relaxes towards the value from Ohm's law. The relaxation time is larger than the lifetime of the external magnetic field for the QCD matter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The lower than expected electric current significantly suppresses the induced magnetic field and makes the electromagnetic response incomplete. We demonstrate the incomplete electromagnetic response of hot QCD matter by calculations employing the parton transport model combined with the solution of Maxwell's equations. Our results show a strong suppression by two orders of magnitude in the magnetic field, relatively to calculations assuming the validity of Ohm's law. This may undermine experimental efforts to measure magnetic-field-related effects in heavy-ion collisions.

The importance of multiple scatterings in medium-induced gluon radiation

    Carlota Andres🇫🇷 · Fabio Dominguez🇪🇸 · Marcos Gonzalez Martinez🇪🇸

In this work we disentangle the underlying physical picture of the in-medium gluon radiation process across its different energy regimes by comparing the recently obtained fully-resummed -- without any further approximations -- BDMPS-Z in-medium emission spectrum with the extensively used analytical approaches. We observe that in the high-energy regime the radiation process is dominated by a single hard scattering, while in the intermediate-energy region coherence effects among multiple scatterings are crucial. Finally, we prove that in the low-energy regime the dynamics is again controlled by a single scattering but where one must include a suppression factor accounting for the probability of not having any further scatterings.

Surveying astrophysical conditions for type-I X-ray bursts with the code MESA, implementing our improved reaction rates, and taking into account updated nuclear masses for and from the recent literature, we refine the neutrino luminosity from the important mass number urca cooling source in accreted neutron star crusts. Implementation of the CRPA model in the GENIE event generator and analysis of nuclear effects in low-energy transfer neutrino-nucleus interactions

    S. Dolan🇨🇭 · A. Nikolakopoulos🇧🇪 · O. Page🇬🇧 · S. Gardiner🇺🇸 · N. Jachowicz🇧🇪 · V. Pandey🇺🇸

We present the implementation and validation of the Hartree-Fock continuum random phase approximation (HF-CRPA) model in the GENIE neutrino-nucleus interaction event generator and a comparison of the subsequent predictions to experimental measurements of lepton kinematics from interactions with no mesons in the final state. These predictions are also compared to those of other models available in GENIE. It is shown that, with respect to these models, HF-CRPA predicts a significantly different evolution of the cross section when moving between different interaction targets, when considering incoming anti-neutrinos compared to neutrinos and when changing neutrino energies. These differences are most apparent for interactions with low energy and momentum transfer. It is also clear that the impact of nucleon correlations within the HF-CRPA framework is very different than in GENIE's standard implementation of RPA corrections. Since many neutrino oscillation experiments rely on their input model to extrapolate between targets, flavours, and neutrino energies, the newly implemented HF-CRPA model provides a useful means to verify that such differences between models are appropriately covered in oscillation analysis systematic error budgets.

Heavy quarks in the early stage of high energy nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC: Brownian motion versus diffusion in the evolving Glasma

    Pooja🇮🇳 · Santosh K. Das🇮🇳 · Lucia Oliva🇮🇹 · Marco Ruggieri🇨🇳

We study the transverse momentum, , broadening of charm and beauty quarks in the early stage of high energy nuclear collisions. We aim to compare the diffusion in the evolving Glasma fields with that of a standard, Markovian-Brownian motion in a thermalized medium with the same energy density of the Glasma fields. The Brownian motion is studied via Langevin equations with diffusion coefficients computed within perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. We find that for small values of the saturation scale, , the average broadening in the two motions is comparable, that suggests that the diffusion coefficient in the evolving Glasma fields is in agreement with the perturbative calculations. On the other hand, for large the broadening in the Langevin motion is smaller than that in the Glasma fields. This difference can be related to the fact that heavy quarks in the latter system experience diffusion in strong, coherent gluon fields that leads to a faster momentum broadening due to memory, or equivalently to a strong correlation in the transverse plane.

Jet Broadening in the Opacity and Twist Expansions

    Hannah Clayton🇿🇦 · Matthew D. Sievert🇺🇸 · W. A. Horowitz🇿🇦

We compute the in-medium jet broadening to leading order in energy in the opacity expansion. At leading order in the elastic energy loss gives a jet broadening that grows with . The next-to-leading order in result is a jet narrowing, due to destructive LPM interference effects, that grows with . We find that in the opacity expansion the jet broadening asymptotics are -- unlike for the mean energy loss -- extremely sensitive to the correct treatment of the finite kinematics of the problem; integrating over all emitted gluon transverse momenta leads to a prediction of jet broadening rather than narrowing. We compare the asymptotics from the opacity expansion to a recent twist-4 derivation of and find a qualitative disagreement: the twist-4 derivation predicts a jet broadening rather than a narrowing. Comparison with current jet measurements cannot distinguish between the broadening or narrowing predictions. We comment on the origin of the difference between the opacity expansion and twist-4 results.

    Momentum-Current Gravitational Multipoles of Hadrons

    Xiangdong Ji🇺🇸 · Yizhuang Liu🇵🇱

We study multipole expansion of the momentum currents in hadrons, with three series , , and , in connection with the gravitational fields generated nearby. The momentum currents are related to their energy-momentum form factors, which in principle can be probed through processes like deeply-virtual Compton scattering currently studied at JLab 12 GeV facility and future Electron Ion Collider. We define the leading momentum-current multipoles, tensor monopole () and scalar quadrupole () moments, relating the former to the so-called -term in the literature. We calculate the momentum current distribution in hydrogen atom and its monopole moment in the basic unit of , showing that the sign of -term has little to do with mechanical stability. The momentum current distribution also strongly modifies the static gravitational field inside hadrons.

Nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation and the Bose-Einstein condensation

The interest in the Klein-Gordon equation with different potentials has increased in recent years due to its possible applications in Cosmology, Hadron Physics and High-Energy Physics. In this work we investigate the solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation for bosons under the influence of an external potential by using the Feshbach-Villars method. We present detailed results for two cases: the Coulombic potential and the harmonic potential. For the latter case, we studied the effects of self-interacting particles by adopting a mean-field approach. We show that our results converge smoothly to the solution of the Schrödinger equation for the same systems as the relativistic effects diminish.

A novel event generator for the automated simulation of neutrino scattering

    Joshua Isaacson🇺🇸 · Stefan Höche🇺🇸 · Diego Lopez Gutierrez🇺🇸 · Noemi Rocco🇺🇸

An event generation framework is presented that enables the automatic simulation of events for next-generation neutrino experiments in the Standard Model or extensions thereof. The new generator combines the calculation of the leptonic current based on an automated matrix element generator, and the computation of the hadronic current based on a state-of-the-art nuclear physics model. The approach is validated in Standard-Model simulations for electron scattering and neutrino scattering. Furthermore, the first fully-differential neutrino trident production results are shown in the quasielastic region.
