Hot and dense quark-gluon plasma thermodynamics from holographic black holes

    Joaquin Grefa🇺🇸 · Jorge Noronha🇺🇸 · Jacquelyn Noronha-Hostler🇺🇸 · Israel Portillo🇺🇸 · Claudia Ratti🇺🇸 · Romulo Rougemont🇧🇷

We present new results on the equation of state and transition line of hot and dense strongly interacting QCD matter, obtained from a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model. We considerably expand the previous coverage in baryon densities in this model by implementing new numerical methods to map the holographic black hole solutions onto the QCD phase diagram. We are also able to obtain, for the first time, the first-order phase transition line in a wide region of the phase diagram. Comparisons with the most recent lattice results for the QCD thermodynamics are also presented.

Hadron-quark mixed phase in the quark-meson coupling model

    Min Ju🇨🇳 · Xuhao Wu🇨🇳 · Fan Ji🇨🇳 · Jinniu Hu🇨🇳 · Hong Shen🇨🇳

We explore the possibility of a structured hadron-quark mixed phase forming in the interior of neutron stars. The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which explicitly incorporates the internal quark structure of the nucleon, is employed to describe the hadronic phase, while the quark phase is described by the same bag model as the one used in the QMC framework, so as to keep consistency between the two coexisting phases. We analyze the effect of the appearance of hadron-quark pasta phases on the neutron-star properties. We also discuss the influence of nuclear symmetry energy and the bag constant B in quark matter on the deconfinement phase transition. For the treatment of the hadron-quark mixed phase, we use the energy minimization method and compare it with the Gibbs construction. The finite-size effects like surface and Coulomb energies are taken into account in the energy minimization method; they play crucial roles in determining the pasta configuration during the hadron-quark phase transition. It is found that the finite-size effects can significantly reduce the region of the mixed phase relative to that of the Gibbs construction. Using a consistent value of B in the QMC model and quark matter, we find that hadron-quark pasta phases are formed in the interior of massive stars, but no pure quark matter can exist.

Hybrid star properties from an extended linear sigma model

    János Takátsy🇭🇺 · Péter Kovács🇭🇺 · György Wolf🇭🇺

The equation of state provided by effective models of strongly interacting matter should comply with the restrictions imposed by current astrophysical observations on compact stars. Using the equation of state given by the (axial-)vector meson extended linear sigma model, we determine the mass-radius relation and study whether these restrictions are satisfied under the assumption that most of the star is filled with quark matter. We study the dependence of the mass-radius relation on the parameters of the model.

A statistical model to calculate inclusive hadronic cross sections

    Gábor Balassa🇭🇺 · György Wolf🇭🇺

Hadronic cross sections are important ingredients in many of the ongoing research methods in high-energy nuclear physics, and it is always important to measure and/or calculate the probabilities of different types of reactions. In heavy-ion transport simulations at a few GeV energies, these hadronic cross sections are essential and so far mostly the exclusive processes are used, however, if one interested in total production rates the inclusive cross sections are also necessary to know. In this paper, we introduce a statistical-based method, which is able to give good estimates to exclusive and inclusive cross sections as well in the energy range of a few GeV. The method and its estimates for not well-known cross sections, will be used in a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) type off-shell transport code to explain charmonium and bottomonium mass shifts in heavy-ion collisions.

Spontaneous double alpha decay: First experimental limit and prospects of investigation

    V.I. Tretyak

Nuclear decays with simultaneous emission of two alpha particles are energetically possible for a number of nuclides. Prospects of searching for such kind of decay for nuclides present in the natural isotopic composition of elements are discussed here. The first experimental limit on half-life for 2alpha decay is set for 209Bi as T1/2 > 2.9e20 y at 90% C.L., using the data of work [P. de Marcillac et al., Nature 422 (2003) 876]. Theoretical T1/2 estimations for the process are also given. Using these values, which are on the level of 1e33 y or more, one can conclude that the prospects of experimental observation of 2alpha decay are very pessimistic.

Production of high purity Mn from V targets with -beams at cyclotrons

    A. Colombi · M.P. Carante · F. Barbaro · L. Canton · A. Fontana

Radioisotope Mn is of special interest for multimodal imaging. Using state-of-art nuclear reaction codes, we study the alternative nuclear reaction route V(,x)Mn in comparison with the standard production routes based upon the use of chromium targets. The integral yields of Mn and contaminants have been evaluated. The main outcome of this investigation is that the production of the main contaminant isotope Mn is expected to be lower than with Cr. The study also reveals a large spread in the cross-section data set and points out the need of more precise measurements of the reaction V(,x)Mn as well as the need of a more accurate theoretical description.

Imaginary Time Propagation on a Quantum Chip

    Francesco Turro🇮🇹 · Alessandro Roggero🇮🇹 · Valentina Amitrano🇮🇹 · Piero Luchi🇮🇹 · Kyle A. Wendt🇺🇸 · Jonathan L DuBois🇺🇸 · Sofia Quaglioni🇺🇸 · Francesco Pederiva🇮🇹

Evolution in imaginary time is a prominent technique for finding the ground state of quantum many-body systems, and the heart of a number of numerical methods that have been used with great success in quantum chemistry, condensed matter and nuclear physics. We propose an algorithm to implement imaginary time propagation on a quantum computer. Our algorithm is devised in the context of an efficient encoding into an optimized gate, drawing on the underlying characteristics of the quantum device, of a unitary operation in an extended Hilbert space. However, we proved that for simple problems it can be successfully applied to standard digital quantum machines. This work paves the way for porting quantum many-body methods based on imaginary-time propagation to near-term quantum devices, enabling the future quantum simulation of the ground states of a broad class of microscopic systems.
