Structure of the neutral pion and its electromagnetic transition form factor

    K. Raya🇲🇽 · L. Chang🇨🇳 · A. Bashir🇲🇽 · J. J. Cobos-Martinez🇲🇽 · L. X. Gutiérrez-Guerrero🇲🇽 · C. D. Roberts🇺🇸 · P. C. Tandy🇺🇸

The transition form factor, , is computed on the entire domain of spacelike momenta using a continuum approach to the two valence-body bound-state problem in relativistic quantum field theory: the result agrees with data obtained by the CELLO, CLEO and Belle Collaborations. The analysis unifies this prediction with that of the pion's valence-quark parton distribution amplitude (PDA) and elastic electromagnetic form factor, and demonstrates, too, that a fully self-consistent treatment can readily connect a pion PDA that is a broad, concave function at the hadronic scale with the perturbative QCD prediction for the transition form factor in the hard photon limit. The normalisation of that limit is set by the scale of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking, which is a crucial feature of the Standard Model. Understanding of the latter will thus remain incomplete until definitive transition form factor data is available on GeV.

Structure effects in the N()N radiative capture reaction from the Coulomb dissociation of N

    Neelam (IIT-R) · Shubhchintak (TAMU-C) · R. Chatterjee (IIT-R)

Purpose : The aim of this paper is to calculate the N()N radiative capture cross section and its subsequent reaction rate by an indirect method and in that process investigate the effects of spectroscopic factors of different levels of N to the cross section. Method : A fully quantum mechanical Coulomb breakup theory under the aegis of post-form distorted wave Born approximation is used to calculate the Coulomb breakup of N on Pb at 100 MeV/u. This is then related to the photodisintegration cross section of N()N and subsequently invoking the principle of detailed balance, the N()N capture cross section is calculated. Results : The non-resonant capture cross section is calculated with spectroscopic factors from the shell model and those extracted (including uncertainties) from two recent experiments. The data seems to favor a more single particle nature for the low-lying states of N. The total neutron capture rate is also calculated by summing up non-resonant and resonant (significant only at temperatures greater than 1 GK) contributions and comparison is made with other charged particle capture rates. In the typical temperature range of GK, almost all the contribution to the reaction rate comes from capture cross sections below 0.25 MeV. Conclusion : We have attempted to resolve the discrepancy in the spectroscopic factors of low-lying N levels and conclude that it would certainly be useful to perform a Coulomb dissociation experiment to find the low energy capture cross section for the reaction, especially below 0.25 MeV.

Resonances and Reactions from Mean-Field Dynamics

    P. D. Stevenson

The time-dependent version of nuclear density functional theory, using functionals derived from Skyrme interactions, is able to approximately describe nuclear dynamics. We present time-dependent results of calculations of dipole resonances, concentrating on excitations of valence neutrons against a proton plus neutron core in the neutron-rich doubly-magic Sn nucleus, and results of collision dynamics, highlighting potential routes to ternary fusion, with the example of a collision of Ca+Ca+Pb resulting in a compound nucleus of element 120 stable against immiedate fission

New Signals of Quark-Gluon-Hadron Mixed Phase Formation

    K.A. Bugaev🇺🇦 · V.V. Sagun🇺🇦 · A.I. Ivanytskyi🇺🇦 · D.R. Oliinychenko🇺🇦 · E.-M. Ilgenfritz🇷🇺 · E.G. Nikonov🇷🇺 · A.V. Taranenko🇷🇺 · G.M. Zinovjev🇺🇦

Here we present several remarkable irregularities at chemical freeze-out which are found using an advanced version of the hadron resonance gas model. The most prominent of them are the sharp peak of the trace anomaly existing at chemical freeze-out at the center of mass energy 4.9 GeV and two sets of highly correlated quasi-plateaus in the collision energy dependence of the entropy per baryon, total pion number per baryon, and thermal pion number per baryon which we found at the center of mass energies 3.8-4.9 GeV and 7.6-10 GeV. The low energy set of quasi-plateaus was predicted a long time ago. On the basis of the generalized shock-adiabat model we demonstrate that the low energy correlated quasi-plateaus give evidence for the anomalous thermodynamic properties inside the quark-gluon-hadron mixed phase. It is also shown that the trace anomaly sharp peak at chemical freeze-out corresponds to the trace anomaly peak at the boundary between the mixed phase and quark gluon plasma. We argue that the high energy correlated quasi-plateaus may correspond to a second phase transition and discuss its possible origin and location. Besides we suggest two new observables which may serve as clear signals of these phase transformations.

Global performance of multireference density functional theory for low-lying states in -shell nuclei

    Xian-Ye Wu🇨🇳 · Xian-Rong Zhou🇨🇳

We present a comprehensive study of low-lying states in even-even Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar isotopes with the multireference density functional theory (MR-DFT) based on a relativistic point-coupling energy density functional (EDF). Beyond mean-field (BMF) effects are taken into account by configuration mixing of both particle-number and angular-momentum projected axially deformed states with generator coordinate method (GCM). Global performance of the MR-DFT for the properties of both ground state and of the first states is examined, in comparison with previous studies based on nonrelativistic EDFs and available data. Our results indicate that an EDF parameterized at the BMF level is demanded to achieve a quantitative description.

Multiplicity fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions using canonical and grand-canonical ensemble

    P. Garg🇮🇳 · D. K. Mishra🇮🇳 · P. K. Netrakanti🇮🇳 · A. K. Mohanty🇮🇳

We report the higher order cumulants and their ratios for baryon, charge and strangeness multiplicity in canonical and grand-canonical ensembles in ideal thermal model including all the resonances. When the number of conserved quanta is small, an explicit treatment of these conserved charges is required, which leads to a canonical description of the system and the fluctuations are significantly different from the grand canonical ensemble. Cumulant ratios of total charge and net-charge multiplicity as a function of collision energies are also compared in grand canonical ensemble.

Continuum discretized BCS approach for weakly bound nuclei

    J. A. Lay · C. E. Alonso · L. Fortunato · A. Vitturi

The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) formalism is extended by including the single-particle continuum in order to analyse the evolution of pairing in an isotopic chain from stability up to the drip line. We propose a continuum discretized generalized BCS based on single-particle pseudostates (PS). These PS are generated from the diagonalization of the single-particle Hamiltonian within a Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) basis. The consistency of the results versus the size of the basis is studied. The method is applied to neutron rich Oxygen and Carbon isotopes and compared with similar previous works and available experimental data. We make use of the flexibility of the proposed model in order to study the evolution of the occupation of the low-energy continuum when the system becomes weakly bound. We find a larger influence of the non-resonant continuum as long as the Fermi level approaches zero.

The long and winding road from chiral effective Lagrangians to nuclear structure

    Ulf-G Meißner🇩🇪

I review the chiral dynamics of nuclear physics. In the first part, I discuss the new developments in the construction of the forces between two, three and four nucleons which have been partly carried out to fifth order in the chiral expansion. It is also shown that based on these forces in conjunction with the estimation of the corresponding theoretical uncertainties, the need for three-nucleon forces in few nucleon systems can be unambiguously established. I also introduce the lattice formulation of these forces, which allow for truly ab initio calculations of nuclear structure and reactions. I present some pertinent results of the nuclear lattice approach. Finally, I discuss how few-nucleon systems and nuclei can be used to explore symmetries and physics within and beyond the Standard Model.

Evidence for the virtual beta-gamma transition in 59Ni

    M. Pfützner · K. Pachucki · J. Żylicz

A novel theory of radiative electron capture in second forbidden non-unique transition, is applied to reanalyze experimental data obtained previously for the decay of 59Ni. The measured gamma spectrum is shown to be distorted at the high-energy end, presenting the first direct evidence for the virtual beta-gamma transition through the excited state in 59Co. The complete theoretical predictions, including both the direct and the virtual decay channels, as well as the interference between them, reproduce very well the experimental spectrum. The virtual nuclear component amounts to about 4% of the total gamma intensity.

New fixed points of the renormalisation group for two-body scattering

    M. C. Birse🇬🇧 · E. Epelbaum🇩🇪 · J. Gegelia🇩🇪

We outline a separable matrix ansatz for the potentials in effective field theories of nonrelativistic two-body systems with short-range interactions. We use this ansatz to construct new fixed points of the renormalisation-group equation for these potentials. New fixed points indicate a much richer structure than previously recognized in the RG flows of simple short-range potentials.

Predictions of covariant chiral perturbation theory for nucleon polarisabilities and polarised Compton scattering

    Vadim Lensky🇩🇪 · Judith A. McGovern🇬🇧 · Vladimir Pascalutsa🇩🇪

We update the predictions of the SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory for the dipole polarisabilities of the proton, fm, and obtain the corresponding predictions for the quadrupole, dispersive, and spin polarisabilities: fm, fm, and fm. The results for the scalar polarisabilities are in significant disagreement with semi-empirical analyses based on dispersion relations, however the results for the spin polarisabilities agree remarkably well. Results for proton Compton-scattering multipoles and polarised observables up to the Delta(1232) resonance region are presented too. The asymmetries and reproduce the experimental data from LEGS and MAMI. Results for agree with a recent sum rule evaluation in the forward kinematics. The asymmetry near the pion production threshold shows a large sensitivity to chiral dynamics, but no data is available for this observable. We also provide the predictions for the polarisabilities of the neutron: fm, fm, fm, and fm. The neutron dynamical polarisabilities and multipoles are examined too. We also discuss subtleties related to matching dynamical and static polarisabilities.

Realistic estimate of valence transversity from dihadron production

    Marco Radici🇮🇹

We have updated our extraction of the transversity parton distribution based on the analysis of pion-pair production in deep-inelastic scattering off transversely polarized targets in collinear factorization. The most recent COMPASS data for proton and deuteron targets, complemented by previous HERMES data on the proton, make it possible to perform a flavor separation of the valence components of the transversity distribution, using di-hadron fragmentation functions taken from the semi-inclusive production of two pion pairs in back-to-back jets in annihilation. The data from BELLE have been reanalyzed to reach a more realistic estimate of the uncertainties on the chiral-odd interference fragmentation function. Our results represent the most accurate estimate of the uncertainties on the valence components of the transversity distribution currently available.

Intermediate mass fragment emission for reactions of Ag, and has been studied. Double differential cross sections were analysed in terms of the generalised moving source model yielding charge distributions. Isotope ratios show strong fragment mass dependencies. The data were successfully reproduced by the coalescence model as well as by statistical multifragmentation model calculations. Quantum molecular dynamics model calculations were not so successful.

No influence of a N=126 Neutron Shell Closure in Fission Fragment Mass Distributions

Mass distributions of the fragments in the fission of Po and the N=126 neutron shell closed nucleus Po have been measured. No significant deviation of mass distributions has been found between Po and Po, indicating the absence of shell correction at the saddle point in both the nuclei, contrary to the reported angular anisotropy and pre-scission neutron multiplicity results. This new result provides benchmark data to test the new fission dynamical models to study the effect of shell correction on the potential energy surface at saddle point.

Hard-Wall and Non-Uniform Lattice Monte Carlo Approaches to One-Dimensional Fermi Gases in a Harmonic Trap

    Casey E. Berger🇺🇸 · Joaquín E. Drut🇺🇸 · William J. Porter🇺🇸

We present in detail two variants of the lattice Monte Carlo method aimed at tackling systems in external trapping potentials: a uniform-lattice approach with hard-wall boundary conditions, and a non-uniform Gauss-Hermite lattice approach. Using those two methods, we compute the ground-state energy and spatial density profile for systems of N=4 - 8 harmonically trapped fermions in one dimension. From the favorable comparison of both energies and density profiles (particularly in regions of low density), we conclude that the trapping potential is properly resolved by the hard-wall basis. Our work paves the way to higher dimensions and finite temperature analyses, as calculations with the hard-wall basis can be accelerated via fast Fourier transforms, the cost of unaccelerated methods is otherwise prohibitive due to the unfavorable scaling with system size.

Harmonically trapped fermions in two dimensions: ground-state energy and contact of SU(2) and SU(4) systems via nonuniform lattice Monte Carlo

We study harmonically trapped, unpolarized fermion systems with attractive interactions in two spatial dimensions with spin degeneracies Nf = 2 and 4 and N/Nf = 1, 3, 5, and 7 particles per flavor. We carry out our calculations using our recently proposed quantum Monte Carlo method on a nonuniform lattice. We report on the ground-state energy and contact for a range of couplings, as determined by the binding energy of the two-body system, and show explicitly how the physics of the Nf-body sector dominates as the coupling is increased.

Time Evolution of Temperature Fluctuation in a Non-Equilibrated System

The evolution equation for inhomogeneous and anisotropic temperature fluctuation inside a medium is derived within the ambit of Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) for a hot gas of massless particles. Also, specializing to a situation created after heavy-ion collision (HIC), we analyze the Fourier space variation of temperature fluctuation of the medium using its temperature profile. The effect of viscosity on the variation of fluctuations in the latter case is investigated and possible implications for early universe cosmology, and its connection with HICs are also explored.

A Monte Carlo algorithm for simulating fermions on Lefschetz thimbles

    Andrei Alexandru🇺🇸 · Gokce Basar🇺🇸 · Paulo Bedaque🇺🇸

A possible solution of the notorious sign problem preventing direct Monte Carlo calculations for systems with non-zero chemical potential is to deform the integration region in the complex plane to a Lefschetz thimble. We investigate this approach for a simple fermionic model. We introduce an easy to implement Monte Carlo algorithm to sample the dominant thimble. Our algorithm relies only on the integration of the gradient flow in the numerically stable direction, which gives it a distinct advantage over the other proposed algorithms. We demonstrate the stability and efficiency of the algorithm by applying it to an exactly solvable fermionic model and compare our results with the analytical ones. We report a very good agreement for a certain region in the parameter space where the dominant contribution comes from a single thimble, including a region where standard methods suffer from a severe sign problem. However, we find that there are also regions in the parameter space where the contribution from multiple thimbles is important, even in the continuum limit.

Thermal photon and dilepton production and electric charge transport in a baryon rich strongly coupled QGP from holography

Stefano Ivo Finazzo (Sao Paulo, IFT)🇧🇷 · Romulo Rougemont (Sao Paulo U.)🇧🇷

We obtain the thermal photon and dilepton production rates in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at both zero and nonzero baryon chemical potential using a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) holographic model that is in good quantitative agreement with the thermodynamics of -flavor lattice QCD around the crossover transition for baryon chemical potentials up to 400 MeV, which may be reached in the beam energy scan (BES) at RHIC. We find that increasing the temperature and the baryon chemical potential enhances the peak present in both spectra. We also obtain the electric charge susceptibility, the DC and AC electric conductivities and the electric charge diffusion as functions of and . We find that electric diffusive transport is suppressed as one increases . At zero baryon density, we compare our results for the DC electric conductivity and the electric charge diffusion with the latest lattice data available for these observables and find reasonable agreement around the crossover transition. Therefore, our holographic results may be used to constraint the magnitude of the thermal photon and dilepton production rates in a strongly coupled QGP, which we found to be at least one order of magnitude below perturbative estimates.
