Characteristics of hybrid compact stars with a sharp hadron-quark interface

    Mark G. Alford🇺🇸 · Sophia Han🇺🇸

We describe two aspects of the physics of hybrid stars that have a sharp interface between a core of quark matter and a mantle of nuclear matter. Firstly, we analyze the mass-radius relation. We describe a generic "Constant Speed of Sound" (CSS) parameterization of the quark matter equation of state (EoS), in which the speed of sound is independent of density. In terms of the three parameters of the CSS EoS we obtain the phase diagram of possible forms of the hybrid star mass-radius relation, and we show how observational constraints on the maximum mass and typical radius of neutron stars can be expressed as constraints on the CSS parameters. Secondly, we propose a mechanism for the damping of density oscillations, including r-modes, in hybrid stars with a sharp interface. The dissipation arises from the periodic conversion between quark matter and nuclear matter induced by the pressure oscillations in the star. We find the damping grows nonlinearly with the amplitude of the oscillation and is powerful enough to saturate an r-mode at very low saturation amplitude, of order , which is compatible with currently-available observations of neutron star spin frequencies and temperatures.

Elastic and inelastic breakup of deuterons with energy below 100 MeV

    B. V. Carlson · R. Capote · M. Sin

We present calculations of deuteron elastic and inelastic breakup cross sections and angular distributions at deuteron energies below 100 MeV obtained using the post-form DWBA approximation. The elastic breakup cross section was extensively studied in the past. Very few calculations of inelastic breakup have been performed, however. We also analyze the angular momentum - energy distributions of the cross section for formation of the compound nucleus after inelastic breakup.

Violation of Factorization Theorem in QCD and QED For Non-Light-Like Wilson Line

    Gouranga C. Nayak🇺🇸

By using path integral formulation of QCD and QED we prove that the factorization theorem is valid for light-like Wilson line but is not valid for non-light-like Wilson line. This conclusion is shown to be consistent with Ward identity and Grammer-Yennie approximation. Hence we find that the factorization theorem is violated in all the previous studies which used the non-light-like Wilson line in the definition of the (transverse momentum dependent) parton distribution function and fragmentation function at high energy colliders.

Non-hydrodynamic transport in trapped unitary Fermi gases

    Jasmine Brewer🇺🇸 · Paul Romatschke🇺🇸

Many strongly coupled fluids are known to share similar hydrodynamic transport properties. In this work we argue that this similarity could extend beyond hydrodynamics to transient dynamics through the presence of non-hydrodynamic modes. We review non-hydrodynamic modes in kinetic theory and gauge/gravity duality and discuss their signatures in trapped Fermi gases close to unitarity. Reanalyzing previously published experimental data, we find hints of non-hydrodynamic modes in cold Fermi gases in two and three dimensions.

Detector resolution correction for width of intermediate states in three particle decays

    Igor Denisenko🇷🇺 · Igor Boyko🇷🇺

We propose a method that allows to take into account detector resolution in the partial wave analysis event-by-event fit as a special case. Implementation of the method is discussed and the applicability of the method is studied for the and decays.

Cold Nuclear Matter Effects on Open and Hidden Heavy Flavor Production at the LHC

    R. Vogt🇺🇸

We discuss a number of cold nuclear matter effects that can modify open heavy flavor and quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions and could thus also affect their production in nucleus-nucleus collisions, in addition to hot quark-gluon plasma production. We show some results for Pb collisions at sqrt s = 5 TeV at the LHC.

Emergence of a new symmetry in the baryon spectrum

    M. Denissenya🇦🇹 · L. Ya. Glozman🇦🇹 · M. Pak🇦🇹

Recently a large degeneracy of mesons, that is larger than the symmetry of the QCD Lagrangian, has been discovered upon truncation of the near-zero modes from the valence quark propagators. It has been found that this degeneracy represents the group that includes the chiral rotations as well as the mixing of left- and right-handed quarks. This symmetry group turns out to be a symmetry of confinement in QCD. Consequently, one expects that the same symmetry should persist upon the near-zero mode removal in other hadron sectors as well. It has been shown that indeed the mesons follow the same symmetry pattern upon the low-lying mode elimination. Here we demonstrate the symmetry of baryons once the near-zero modes are removed from the quark propagators. We also show a degeneracy of states belonging to different irreducible representations of . This implies a larger symmetry, that includes as a subgroup.
