Neutron-neutron scattering length from photoproduction on the deuteron

Abstract

We discuss the possibility of extracting the neutron-neutron scattering length and effective range from cross section data (), as a function of the invariant mass , for photoproduction on the deuteron (). The analysis is based on a reaction model in which realistic elementary amplitudes for , , and are built in. We show that dependence (lineshape) of a ratio , normalized by for and the nucleon momentum distribution inside the deuteron, at the kinematics with and MeV is particularly useful for extracting and from the corresponding data . It is found that with 2% error, resolved into the bin width of 0.04 MeV (corresponding to the bin width of 0.05 MeV), can determine and with uncertainties of fm and fm, respectively, for the case of fm and fm. The requirement of such narrow bin widths indicates that the momenta of the incident photon and the emitted have to be measured with high resolutions. This can be achieved by utilizing virtual photons of very small from electron scattering at Mainz MAMI facility. The proposed method for determining and from has a great experimental advantage over the previous one utilizing for being free from the formidable task of controlling the neutron detection efficiency and its uncertainty.
