Additive Multi-Index Gaussian process modeling, with application to multi-physics surrogate modeling of the quark-gluon plasma

    Kevin Li · Simon Mak · J.-F Paquet · Steffen A. Bass

The Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) is a unique phase of nuclear matter, theorized to have filled the Universe shortly after the Big Bang. A critical challenge in studying the QGP is that, to reconcile experimental observables with theoretical parameters, one requires many simulation runs of a complex physics model over a high-dimensional parameter space. Each run is computationally very expensive, requiring thousands of CPU hours, thus limiting physicists to only several hundred runs. Given limited training data for high-dimensional prediction, existing surrogate models often yield poor predictions with high predictive uncertainties, leading to imprecise scientific findings. To address this, we propose a new Additive Multi-Index Gaussian process (AdMIn-GP) model, which leverages a flexible additive structure on low-dimensional embeddings of the parameter space. This is guided by prior scientific knowledge that the QGP is dominated by multiple distinct physical phenomena (i.e., multiphysics), each involving a small number of latent parameters. The AdMIn-GP models for such embedded structures within a flexible Bayesian nonparametric framework, which facilitates efficient model fitting via a carefully constructed variational inference approach with inducing points. We show the effectiveness of the AdMIn-GP via a suite of numerical experiments and our QGP application, where we demonstrate considerably improved surrogate modeling performance over existing models.

Hydrodynamic theories for a system of weakly self-interacting classical ultra-relativistic scalar particles: microscopic derivations and attractors

    Gabriel S. Rocha🇧🇷 · Caio V. P. de Brito🇧🇷 · Gabriel S. Denicol🇧🇷

We derive and investigate several hydrodynamic formalisms that emerge from a system of classical, ultra-relativistic scalar particles self-interacting via a quartic potential. The specific form of the total cross-section enables the analytical computation of all transport coefficients that appear in Navier-Stokes (NS), Bemfica-Disconzi-Noronha-Kovtun (BDNK), and second-order transient hydrodynamic theories. We solve all these formalisms in a Bjorken flow scenario and show that NS and BDNK theories display unphysical features when gradients become sufficiently large. This implies that these hydrodynamic approaches may not be suitable to describe the early stages of heavy ion collisions.

Probing DDM and ML quantum concepts in shape phase transitions of -unstable nuclei

    S. Ait El Korchi · M. Chabab · A. El Batoul · A. Lahbas · M. Oulne

In a recent paper (S. Ait El Korchi et al. 2020 EPL 132 52001), we explored, inside the context of Critical Point Symmetries (CPSs) X(3) and Z(4), a correlation between two exceedingly known quantum concepts, the Minimal Length (ML) and the Deformation-Dependent Mass (DDM), that are commonly applied in various areas of physics. Such a correlation has been strongly identified in transition nuclei by calculating some physical observables of that quantum system, like as energy spectra, moments of inertia and transition probabilities. In this paper we extend that study to E(5) dynamical symmetry corresponding to the shape phase transition U(5)O(6). The experimental realization of the models was found to occur in some nuclei, using the existing phenomenological potentials : Infinite Square Well, Davidson and Kratzer, whose models fits provide the best agreement. Importantly the calculations performed in this work using these potentials corroborate the fact that the revealed correlation between both quantum concepts is not destructively affected by the presence of other model parameters and hence its existence is independent of the form or type of the used potential. Undoubtedly, the present work will open the way for more investigations of this correlation in the limits of other critical points symmetries in nuclear shape phase transitions which play today a major role in nuclear structure research from theoretical as well as experimental point of view.

Born-Infeld nonlinear electromagnetism in relativistic heavy ion collisions

    Will Price🇺🇸 · Martin Formanek🇨🇿 · Johann Rafelski🇺🇸

We study the effect of the limiting field strength of Born-Infeld electromagnetism on the dynamics of charged particle scattering. We formulate the Born-Infeld limiting field in an invariant manner, showing that it is the electric field-dominated eigenvalue `' of the field tensor which is limited rather than the individual field vectors. Heavy ion collisions in particular provide uniquely large values of the field invariants that appear in the BI action, amplifying nonlinear effects. Thus ``'' is the dominant input into the force between heavy ions that we use to compute the scattering angle as a function of impact parameter. We evaluate the BI effects, showing relevance at small impact parameters and exhibiting their dependence on the value of the limiting field strength.
