    Nuclear Excitation by Muon Capture

Simone Gargiulo · Ming Feng Gu · Fabrizio Carbone · Ivan Madan

Efficient excitation of nuclei via exchange of a real or virtual photon has a fundamental importance for nuclear science and technology development. Here, we present a new mechanism of nuclear excitation based on the capture of a free muon into the atomic orbits (NEC). The cross section of such a new process is evaluated using the Feshbach projection operator formalism and compared to other known excitation phenomena, i.e. photo-excitation and nuclear excitation by electron capture (NEEC), showing up to ten orders of magnitude increase in cross section. NEC is particularly interesting for MeV excitations that become accessible thanks to the stronger binding of muons to the nucleus. The binding energies of muonic atoms have been calculated introducing a state of the art modification to the Flexible Atomic Code (FAC). An analysis of an experimental scenarios in the context of modern muon production facilities shows that the effect can be detectable for selected isotopes. The total probability of NEC is predicted to be per incident muon in a beam-based scenario. Given the high transition energy provided by muons, NEC can have important consequences for isomer feeding and particle-induced fission.

Impact of hadronic interactions and conservation laws on cumulants of conserved charges in a dynamical model

    Jan Hammelmann🇩🇪 · Hannah Elfner🇩🇪

Understanding the phase diagram of QCD by measuring fluctuations of conserved charges in heavy-ion collision is one of the main goals of the beam energy scan program at RHIC. Within this work, we calculate the role of hadronic interactions and momentum cuts on cumulants of conserved charges up to fourth order in a system in equilibrium within a hadronic transport approach (SMASH). In our model the net baryon, net charge and net strangeness is perfectly conserved on an event-by-event basis and the cumulants are calculated as a function of subvolume sizes and compared to analytic expectations. We find a modification of the kurtosis due to charge annihilation processes in systems with simplified degrees of freedom. Furthermore the result of the full SMASH hadron gas for the net baryon and net proton number fluctuations is presented for systems with zero and finite values of baryon chemical potential. Additionally we find that due to dynamical correlations the cumulants of the net baryon number cannot easily be recovered from the net protons. Finally the influence of deuteron cluster formation on the net proton and net baryon fluctuations in a simplified system is shown. This analysis is important to better understand the relation between measurements of fluctuations in heavy-ion collisions and theoretical calculation which are often performed in a grand canonical ensemble.

Symmetry energy effects on the properties of hybrid stars

    He Liu🇨🇳 · Jun Xu🇨🇳 · Peng-Cheng Chu🇨🇳

Symmetry energy is an important part of the equation of state of isospin asymmetry matter. However, the huge uncertainties of symmetry energy remain at suprasaturation densities, where the phase transitions of strongly interacting matter and the quark matter symmetry energy are likely to be taken into account. In this work, we investigate the properties of symmetry energy by using a hybrid star with the hadron-quark phase transition. The interaction among strange quark matter (SQM) in hybrid stars is based on a 3-flavor NJL model with different vector and isovector channels, while the equation of state (EOS) of the nuclear matter is obtained by considering the ImMDI-ST interaction by varying the parameters x, y, and z. Our results indicate that the various parameters and coupling constants of the interactions from the ImMDI-ST and NJL model can lead to widely different trends for the symmetry energy in the hadron-quark mixed phase and the different onsets of the hadron-quark phase transition. In addition, it has been found that the radii and tidal deformabilities of hybrid stars constrain mostly the density dependence of symmetry energy while the observed maximum masses of hybrid stars constrain mostly the EOS of symmetric nuclear and quark matter.
